Its not that the laser burns out with the sensors taped down, its cause you are using burnt material on your PSTwo. Since the average burnt cd/dvd is burnt using a conventional computer cd/dvd writer it isnt as good quality as original and requires the laser to work 'harder', in a sense, by increasing the voltage and the intensity of the laser itself to be able to read the medium. This information is what I've gathered from various souces and it may not hold for all cases. Heck I could be dead wrong in believing what I read on the net but its true that the Jap version of the PSTwo (SCPH 70000) has a different laser then the majority of the rest (SCPH 700x1-8).

I think MOST xbox games are DVD-5's. There are like 2 that are bigger than ~4.7 GB. I forget which one they are (read this somewhere once).

About the PS2 laser, I'll let you know if anything goes wrong. I have a US version.

Hi everyone new to the forum and just finished reading all 9 pages of this thread. Ill sum it up so you wont have to go thru what I went thru.

1. Softmodding your PStwo with glue and tape is fine as long as u put a very little amount. (If you feel uneasy with the whole super glue thing just use a little more tape to make sure that sucker stays down)

2. Softmodding doesnt affect your laser that was just hype created from one person to another. If your system went dead it was prolly due to you getting a bad unit. (I highly doubt that they put a timer switch on the sensors to burn out your laser and besides if you live in the US or CAN you can always return it at Walmart, they take back anything)

3. There are ways around not voiding your warranty if your careful (i.e. using a knife to scrape the sticker off CAREFULLY or just not taking the sticker off and using it as a hinge when ur unit is open).

Now for the part that im not to clear on.

1. Which version of SMD works for the PStwo? From what I gather its from version 3.0 and up (cd disc) and version 2.0 and up (dvd disc)?

2. It was answered earlier but im just curious and would like a confirmation. Can burned copies of SMD work or do you original 1:1 copies?

3. This one was answered indirectly but I just want to clarify. Can JAP games be played on the US consoles using SMD? Ive read in some post of people playing JAP games but I dont remember if they were UK or US units.

**EDIT** BURNED Jap games

If you have the answers to my question and would be kind enough to answer them TIA

Hey, I just got the new slimline model today and I have the swap magic(CD) "3.2 USA Build" and the DVD v2.0 USA Build. I totally fucked over my other ps2 with the slide card (NEVER, EVER try pulling the cd tray out while it's still spinning or if it makes any weird noise... stupid mistake).

But anyways it was like four years old and ready to die. So I get the new one and I'm like "yeah!" it loaded my dvd-R movies, loaded the dvd games and cd games, everything seems to be fine but this one won't load the swap magic dvd at all (it loads the cd though). Now I read this whole entire thread but I'm wondering, did the dvd even load for you guys before you tried the tape mod? Or did you have to tape stuff down before that even happened? I understand it's done so that it tells the ps2 the cover was never opened so you can switch discs easily, but my problem is it's not loading at all.

Any advice would be appreciated, I REALLY put a lot of effort and money into getting my dvd burner, all these dvd+rs and all this other crap. I really just wanna play burned games but I don't want a solder mod because I know I will probably fuck that up...

I think if everyone else goes with SM 3.3 I might as well too but I'm sick of spending money and wanted to know if this method helps it load up the dvd or if you guys had no problems with that in the first place...

Thanks a lot, peace.

I just got my Swap Magic 3.3 disk in the mail today, the new PS2 slim reads it fine. I didn't try to tape it up or anything yet though. I just got back from Best Buy with eight more PS2's lol, but I was talking with one of the sales reps over there. It seems to me like that "laser burnout" issue is a rumor being used by stores to get you to purchase the extended warantee. But then again, if they KNEW the laser was gonna burn out, why would they want to sell extended warantees for $20? Also, the box of the PS2 advertises that they play DVD-R and DVD+R disks, so I don't know how this will ruin the laser. About the tape mod, Sony would be out of their mind to make your PS burn out if you don't open the top for a while. If I only bought one game, and played it day after day, you think it'll shut down my system? LOL.

actually yea...as long as u have straw ur good lol its weird but works well and doesnt void ur warrenty which is nice.

burnt and import? uh~ as long as u have SwapMagic 3.3 then yea i guess EXCEPT like i said...i'm having problems with Naruto hero 2 but this other japanese game works so i'm not sure but 1/2 works...then again thats only a low 50%....

so does anyone kno anything about Naruto hero 2 or what?

Well I guess I might as well order 3.3 I just hope it works and if not I'm returning it... At least the site shows a way of doing it and this thread also does, so one or the other has to work.

He said his disk 'worked'. I believe he was just referring to the SM disk loading up, he prolly just hasn't gone back to put the tape back in yet to actually start swapping.

I have spent two weeks reading all this and other forums, i have just got a ps2 "slimline" and swap magic 3.3 is on the way,(old ps2 laser died) also from "linker4u" the site i bought swap magic from there is a new flip top lid for the new ps2, how does this work?... am i to belive that you won't have to mod it cos it won't know when the lid is open (as the lid is in the centre) out of the reach of one of the sensors, and if you need to do a legit swap (for whatever reason, or for a 2 disc game) you can cos the whole lid opens via the normal eject button but only the middle circle flips up for a undetected swap???? i don't want to mod it, i just wanna use swap magic 3.3 and a flip cover is this poss, has anyone got one Please help, this is my 1st post here but i read all the forums for all dvd- and + probs, You lot kick ass!! Never have i neaded post as all my questions were answered but this i must know! TA! I have PAL uk ps2 "slim" version 70003
