i personally don't think it has anything to do with the "modchips"...i still firmly believe it's with the DVD checks and an extra little surprise thrown in by the games developer...to try and stop people from making b/ups of their originals, but more so to stop the "so called pirates" from copying their software...

If the GT4 guys were REALLY, TRULY worried about security, then they would have taken Sonic Team's example for messing with people. Back when Dreamcast was king, only the people with tools and knowledge were able to rip games. It was a lot harder to copy those games than it is to copy a PS2 game. Anyways, catching onto the fact that the DC scene had long since cracked the CD protection scheme they had, allowing for backups to boot on dreamcasts without them even needing to be modified. It was a first, and a huge one, the first time people were able to get copied games to run on a system, with absolutely no need to have it modified in any way at all. All you had to do was download the ISO and burn it.

Anyways, most people were unaware of the fact that as time went by, developers got more savvy and had harder protection schemes put in their games. Echelon and Kalisto were releasing one game a day at their peak, but people (in their infinite greed) started getting upset when that started slowing down. People were demanding games (for free, with nothing more than patronage to IRC chat rooms) before they were even being released. This is biggest reason that the scene fell apart (aside from the discontinuation of the DC in the US)

Anyways, to get back on point, Sonic Team, to mess with these crackers would not only put some sick protection in the beginning of the game, but all throughout. Not only that, they learned the cracker's methods and used it against them. They made games not work correctly if a certain method was tried (kinda like how we get a black screen with nothing after the intro text), and these protection schemes were often hardcoded, most likely in by hand, way after development had finished, JUST to stop crackers. This goes far beyond the scope of most games, who depend on some algorithm for protection that's developed along with the game.

Anyways, if GT4 is going to be like this, I wonder what it's going to be like in the future. Are developers going to get more vicious? Are they going to start making more serious efforts to protect their games? I think it's amazing that Sony has let us get this far. They knew all the methods we were using, and all the hardware workarounds we were using as they came out with subsequent PS2 versions, but they never addressed these issues. Just look at the PSTwo, they remodeled them, but they did nothing to try to stop pirates. After modification, they'll work the same way as any other PS2.

Anyways, I just wanted to say that I think this is great what L-Burna, Toolboy, and all the Alucard guys are doing. Because the war between hacker and developer is never going to end. And if games are going to continue on like GT4, then protection schemes are simply going to get more vicious as time goes on.

Quote:
Due to high demand from all of you guys, we released today a beta version of the Firmwarwe V1.4.
This firmware will give to everyone the possibility to use the Gran Turismo 4 back up on DVDL+R DL with the Infinity.
So anyone tried this already ?

on the matter with PS2 or psx for that matter...sony has it set up the way they want it,thats how they have made their billions of $
believe this or not...yours or anyones choice, sony was actually the one that designed "modchips" for their systems....yes it's true, hidden subsiduaries, hence more towards their billions of $,they make these choices in making electronic equipment knowing full well that they can be reversed engineered, but they have the law on their side, whilst i respect copyright, more so for the developers and not for sony, they just endorse the products.sony just wants everything their way, they make these new state of the art DVD burners, they know perfectly well what consumers are going to do with them...it goes on,need i say anymore...
theres an old saying,it applies to this too,"copy protection"by game developers or even sony.....theres ALWAYS someone better than you are.
i think toolboy has proven that.....
sorry i got off track of forum, but i just had to have a say in this matter

From what I've been told, There were Microsoft Engineer is related to PS2NFO.com and other PS2 hacking forums, They are actually helping those guys to hack ps2 console and software....It is kinda very interesting you know.

It is also said, there seems to be sony engineer is related to the Microsoft XBOX hacking team, But this is unknown, rumor maybe...

I think, hacking will always be in the Console gaming world unless two of them perishes...

It DOES work if you burn to a DVD+R DL with Matrix 1.4 software. Everyone is posting that it MIGHT work w/ Matrix, but for me it DOES work. Just wanted to clarify.

I'm sort of a noob, so I follow instructions word for word instead of actually thinking about what I am doing, but I think I found a small error in the guide GT4_HDD_DVD9.doc found in the GT4HDD_DVD9_FILES.rar on ps2hd.com. In step one, you use Apache to dump the files out of the ISO. Whenever you right-click on the vol name, and click extract all, then dump into c:\test, it automatically creates a subfolder called GRANTURISMO4 and puts the files in there. Then you supposed switch layers and extract the files to the same folder. According to the guide, you are supposed to dump the second layer into c:\test\GRANTURISMO4. If you do that, the second layer will actually be dumped into c:\test\GRANTURISMO4\GRANTURISMO4, and it will not be included in the process when you run IML2ISO later in the guide. If you make the same error I did, you will end up with a ISO around 2,613,621 KB when you are complete. Make sure that you tell apache to extract both layers to c:\test. That way they will both be extracted to c:\test\GRANTURISMO4. You should end up with an ISO around 5,148,440 KB.

i did the same thing except i caught it before i tried to rebuild the iso. that isn't a glitch in the instructions, they say to extract both layers to c:\test, because both layers automatically have the sub folder GRANTURISMO4. another mistake that i made at first that people should watch out for is when you dump the patch files into the directory, make sure it goes into c:\test\GRANTURISMO4. at first i made the mistake of just putting them in c:\test, and when i got to that dos command "soz -d core.gt4" it couldnt find the file, because it wasn't in the right directory! anyway those are just some helpful tips. I think someone should start a new thread called "HOW TO PATCH GRAN TURISMO 4" and post all the files toolboy supplies and have a couple tips like these, that way people will quit going "sorry i didnt read the thread cause it was too long but could someone just answer my question for me please because im special and im reallly lazy and i hate reading more than a few words at a time" just make individual threads for the HDD patch, for the DVD9 patch, for the upcoming DVD5 patch, and anything else.
