3dluis, thanks for the nice tutorial. One question: is it not necessary to extract the UDF-branch, only the ISO? Will the new and much smaller ISO (2,3 Gig instead of 4,6 Gig) work as well as the original size? And do you think a corrupt ISO could be repared with extracting the files and rebuilding a new ISO?

@jdjuggler - Yes , If you do get a mod chip, you'll be able to play quickly and no swaping time :P
@Fratres - Quote: One question: is it not necessary to extract the UDF-branch, only the ISO?
What You mean?, if you mean press file, etract iml, than yes it is.
Quote: Will the new and much smaller ISO (2,3 Gig instead of 4,6 Gig) work as well as the original size?
Yes it will, because when you rebuild a game, it will reeduce its TOC size. It will not affect the gameplay or we would all not be doing it :P
Quote: And do you think a corrupt ISO could be repared with extracting the files and rebuilding a new ISO?
Hmm, proablly not, because the iso buster might detect its currupt so it wont extract, but its worth a try anyway mate.
@ntintis - No it work for all Mods.

@3dluis- thanks for the reply. Well, I meant extracting only the ISO part of an ISO/UDF in Isobuster. Tried it with an ISO-file that seemed corrupt (burn failed with DVD Decrypter and Alcohol), Isobuster could open it, and after I extracted the ISO-branch (UDF part had just the same files) and burned it the game seems to work, although I only tested a few minutes. So what is the UDF part of the session in an ISO-file (it´s half the size of the whole ISO!)good for?

Hey, 3dluis
Your Guide was a big help. THANKS!! I did notice that the link for the apache software was giving me the Mom software. I went to the backuptools homepage and was able to download apache. My question is that after I have rebuilt the game and have burned it to disk can I then use nero to copy the burnt disk.

I'm don't know if you can do it with that. Probally if you get the iso with DVD Decrypter and and burn it again it should work without rebuilding again. Thanks for nice feed back

I was able to rebuild Fantastic 4 and it worked great. I will see if Nero will make a copy of the rebuild. I was unable to get Sonic heroes to work after the rebuild, is there anything special that I need to do?

I don't really know what your talking about. GT4 is a DVD-9 or dual layer game. You need a modchip that supports dual layer games. Your other option is to shrink it to DVD-5 or a single layer DVD. Search the forums for info on that.
77. Q. I have a modchip that supports DVD-9 games like the Matrix Infinity or DMS 4, how do I burn my dual layer discs?
A. You most definitely don't want to waste money on DL disc's, they're just too expensive for us po folks. You burn dual layer DVD-R's the same as single layer DVD-R's. Use DVD Decrypter. Burn at 4x on a DL 8x DVD-R. Use quality DVD-R's like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, TDK, Maxell, Sony, or Phillips. Avoid Memorex, Imation, Staples, or generic brand X.

I've tried to shrink GT4 with DVD Shrink but it refuses to work. I have saved it as a MDS/MDF and as an ISO but shrink does not work. What other options do i have?

You can't use DVD Shrink to shrink a PS2 game. You have to take out some of the movie files and extras. There is no real tutorial for it, since it's different from game to game. Search for GT4, I'm sure there are some DVD-9 to DVD-5 guides for such a popular game.

@Waycool1 - When you burn that iso (rebuilt version). Just keep the rebuilt iso. And when you want more copies of it, just burn that iso again.

3dluis, I took the fantastic 4 game that I rebuilt and used Nero and chose copy disc, it worked. I do not know if this will work for all rebuilds, but it worked for this one.

Hey All, I just joined, after spending many nights reading, and many trial and errors. So far I have made several bootable backups. Everything works smooth, except for game play. Every game except for one (GTA: San Andreas works flawlessly), skips, freezes, sound is distorted, and is just horrible to even try to play. There are no problems with the bootup process (I'm using swap magic 3 with first generation ps2) just trying to play the game. My last attempt was with "Need for Speed: Most wanted", using verbatim DVD-R, and Alcohol 120%, created an image and burned at 2x with a nec3580 dl burner. Still produced the same effects. Boots fine, but gameplay sucks. Any suggestions to a frustrated mind would be much appreciated. Thanks all.

4brandys, are you backing up original's? if so, the problem may be the original. Make sure that works perfectly before attempting to back up games. Also try burning at 1x, as this reduces margin for error.

Try setting the read speed in DVD Decrypter to 1x. Go to Tools-->Settings-->Device, check set read speed and set it to 1x. Click okay, then rip the iso as normal.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. I've tried both suggestions and have still ended up with the same choppy game play. On "Need for Speed: Most wanted", the game will allow you to play, however it has to stop and load every 20 seconds of play, the movie's are choppy and sound somewhat distorted. I can't understand what is wrong. Original's play fine. I thought maybe my laser was going bad, if that is the case, wouldn't the originals play the same way? Should verbatim dvd-r's be efficient enough to use, or do I need to go up the chain some more on media? My pc is a custom built athlon 2000 with 512 mb ddr ram--would the system setup effect the burn process? Any other suggestions or assistance would be appreciated.

Make sure your burner is in DMA mode. Verbatim is good media. Try rebuilding the game.
82. Q. When I'm burning with DVD Decrypter or Nero I get an I/O error or some other strange error, what's going on?
A. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949 With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515 With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.
1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.
Make sure you do it in that order.
This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.
