Well I believe there is modded firmware for that particular burner. The main danger is if you don't follow directions while flashing, you could fry your drive. You need to shut all other programs down, make sure there is no disk in the drive, and follow the flash instructions exactly. Doc and other's could tell you more about hacked firmware. If you have any doubts about flashing, don't worry about it. It's really pretty simple as long as you follow directions.

Thanx. I will do it probably. I think for my driver is 1y rp1 or something like that. I will wait for some more answers, like u said, maybe Doc or some other have more experience with mod.firms.
Thanks again

did someone mention my name? Doc to the rescue~ :) j/k

anyways, so...cypresrom, ur not using Nero anymore for any of ur burns? so when u use DVD Shrink, are u auto-setting to BURN w/ decrypter? or what is the EXACT burning application you are using?

also, what dvd identifier programs have you tried to identify your dvd+r's AFTER the burn? i have had several instances where dvdinfoPRO would tell me mine is booktyped to dvd-rom and dvd identifier from cd freaks tells me it's STILL DVD+R, this holds true with Nero cd-speed and DVD Decrypter as well~ :) just want to cover ALL possible bases when you use these dvd identifier programs..there are quite a few to choose from...i've never used VSO's dvd/media inspector program, but i heard it's VERY good too~ :)

2ndly, how certain are you that the standalones you've tried your burns in WILL NOT play DVD+R media? if i am reading you right, you're saying that these DVD+R media MUST be booktyped to dvd-rom, since they play in those particular standalones that DO NOT play DVD+R media...but your dvd identifier programs are NOT indicating that they ARE booktyped to dvd-rom?

lastly, using hacked firmware is NOT a big deal, just know ahead of time that it WILL VOID your warranty and there IS a chance of frying ur drive, however small the possibility might be~ :) you just have to familiarize yourself with cross-flashing and using various programs (firmware patchers, flashers, etc) to do it properly...but, it's not a big deal...

unfortunately, i can't help you with the newest of NEC's burner offerings as i have had NO experience with it; the process should be VERY similar to what i have done on MY Nec 3520a, i actually use Liggy's NEC 3.06 BookType setting, RPC1 and Riplock removed (Liggy), mostly for the booktype setting feature, my nec is on my 2nd computer anyways and i don't use it that often... :)

for YOUR drive, you would probably considering using either of these, i do not know the difference between the 2, as i mentioned, i don't have that drive to test it on myself:

NEC 3550 1.05 BookType setting, RPC1 and Riplock removed (Liggy)

or

NEC 3550 1.Y4 BookType setting, RPC1 and Riplock removed (Liggy)

i'm assuming the latter of the 2 is for OEM nec3550s, perhaps ones bundled with Dell systems or some other computer builders that have funky firmware revisions to set them apart from the "norm?" LOL? i dunno...wait, just read the fine print, i GUESS the latter...1.Y4, it provides support for Ritek DL media, that is the only thing i could find that is different than the Liggy's 1.05 version...

anyways, the modified firmwares SHOULD provide you with the bitsetting capabilities that you seek...i do remember that on MY nec 3520a, before i flashed it with Liggy's firmware, i was using the official NEC firmware before even knowing about "booktyping" and such...the Nec drives burn well and fast, but i guess i didn't really notice that my DVD+R media wasn't dvd-rom at that time...we ALL live and learn...

i won't even burn a DVD+R media disc now if i KNOW it's NOT going to be booktyped to dvd-rom...yes, i'm very picky about THAT aspect of dvd burning nowadays, before, i just didn't know about the benefits of booktyping, now i too have "seen the light" :0

docTY~

let me know what you would like to do...PM if u want, if you feel you are taking this thread into the wrong direction...we're here to help, so i personally don't think your "off-topic" that much~ :)

Alkohol is in the house, so don't you worry (oh, plus Doc. too, hehehe, LOL).

*NOTE: If you have the following set to "Automatic", then whenever you use Nero Express (for PS2 games or dvd movies), Nero Burning Rom (for dvd movies or PS2 games) Nero Recode 2 & Nero Vision (for dvd movies) to burn, all your backups will automatically set the ?Book Type? to DVD-ROM if you?re using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL media. That is... if your dvd burner is capable of book typing.

((Here's how to set the "Book Type" or "Bitsetting" using Nero Burning Rom by Alkohol)) **NOTE: this is just the settings only, it will work even if you burn your PS2 games with Nero Express, it will automatically "Book Type" your DVD+R into DVD-ROM when you're burning with Nero Express.

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on ?Options," then on "Book Type Settings," set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every time when you burn using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL disc, Nero will ?automatically? change the Book Type into a DVD-ROM format.

Here is a guide on how to "book type" via DVD Decrypter. This is when you're "ready" to burn to the blank media (DVD+R DL, DVD+R, DVD+RW) only. NOTE: set both of your "source" and "destination" ready, then do the following and burn it. If for some reason the (DVD+R/DVD+R DL) doesn't work for you, then try the (DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+R DL - EEPROM!), it should work, if you have one of the drives that DVD Decrypter listed).

Try the NEC hacked firmware here http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3550/ or here http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/index.html or here http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/

Thanks Doc!
Well about booktyping,
using Nero Sys info, and DVDDecrypter it says I am booktyped DVD+R,when the burn is over.
How do I know the stand alone don't play DVD+R:
First, my borrowed laptop is the one that I have Nero installed on to. It only has a DVD-RoM.When I do a Sys.Info with Nero, it says that does not support reading any DVD+R. And if I put a DVD+R in the drive,a blank one, it will not recognize it. But it does play the burned one.
The stand alone ones, I have an old cheap Magnavox, that I doubt it supports DVD+R and the other one is an Apex AD-1225.The manual says it only suppots mp3/wma and windows appl and Kodak pics CD/JPG.

What I noticed after my last burn, DVD Shrink an option when u have Nero on your computer. U can cahnge booktype, right before u hit bakup. Can also click the little icon that says "burn at least 30 mmm(DVD+R/RW high compatibility mode).Well, mine are inacrive after I uninstalled Nero, but the click is on for booktype to DVD-ROM. Again, it is on, but inactive(greyed out or something like that). Anyway, the only reason I would flash the drive, is for booktyping. But, as for now, the disks play fine...The only program that says I burned DVD-ROMs is Nero CD-DVD speed under disc info, the tab between the Benchmark tab and the disc quality tab. But the same Nero CD-DVD speed test says I have DVD+R when I try to booktype, on the same disc!!!!And also, when I open Nero StartSmart, I click the DiscInf icon under extras and it says is DVD+R.maybe I will try to find how to post some pics...

Okay now Q. about media...
How is a burned DVD supposed to look like? Mine looks like the dye on the back formed some concentric rings, some of darker colour then others. Is that okay, or is the colour supposed to be even on #1 quality media after burn and I got some fake coded Verbatims? Now I am trying the MiJ Sonys....45 min to complete.
Thanks for all your help everybody.

Thank Alkohol,
But, I do not have Nero on the computer that I burn with...I used to.Not anymore...I only have it on a laptop borrowed from school. I put it there just to play and learn.I have to return it in a week, and I don't care how much junk I put on, they will clean it up nicely...So, I do not use Nero for my burns...is uninstalled from my desktop...
Again though, the guide is super!!
Thanks

cyprusrom,

In order for the bookktype dvd-rom to be active and not grayed out in DVD Shrink you must first flash your NEC with modified f/w and also have Nero installed.

Try these NEC hacked firmware here http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3550/ or here http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/index.html or here http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/ - it's in the very bottom of my "book typing" reply earlier. It should work for you, if done properly.

In query to DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, I hardly use DVD Shrink now-a-days because of the ease of using Nero. However, I do believe that for DVD Decrypter to "book type" properly, you'll have to go in there every single burns before you hit "WRITE" to work. Hopefully, someone will straight things out, but I'm pretty sure that's how I've always done it whenever I used DVD Decrypter to burn any of my ISO image.

in regards to the media having "rings"...this happens on SOME of my burns too, i guess you could say it's "normal" and you need not worry~:)

SOME of my discs have these "rings", most of them do not...i don't know what the deal is with or without them, the ones i have WITH the rings, they play back flawlessly; physically, the discs are perfect, only on the purple side (burned side) i notice the concentric rings you mentioned earlier...

i don't have a better explanation than that...i rarely even check to see if the discs have the "rings" or not...it doesn't seem to affect the playback ON MY DISCS that do have the "rings"...maybe someone else has a "better" explanation...lol...don't know what else to say.

Yes, I can't complain about the playback. I was just asking, because I noticed some have some don't. And since I only burned CMCs and a few good Maxells MIJ, and I noticed they had almost none...I thought I would check with someone that handled a few burns in their life...:).I was worried about the Verbs I got today!

This is a Ritek G05 burned at 8x. It has a very pronounced ring and also blemishes all over it. It was also a coaster. The last bunch of Riteks I got were like this with any of my burners if they were burned at 8X. I guess they couldn't take the higher heat of the laser at 8X. I probably won't be using any more of them.

well, the ones I have w/ the "rings" on it were not as "pronounced" as yours...i don't have any discs with such a "deep" ring in 1 spot as yours...i think you just really got a bad batch of Ritek's and naturally, has probably left a bad taste in your mouth...if i had those issues like you, i would probably never use Ritek again either~ :)

I probably never will use them again, but not for this reason. The first bunch of TYG02 I got were like this to a degree. They would only burn successfully on my BenQ or Pioneer and then not always. Fortunately, I haven't received any more like that. I realize that it is possible to get an occasional bad batch from any manufacturer. I've had a few Verbatims that I wasn't too happy with either. Not many, but it does happen. I won't use any more Riteks mainly due to the longevity problems that I and others have had with the printable discs. I prefer printable discs or I would probably still use them.

that makes total sense to me, we ALL have our own issues with media, printable or not~ :) i've always used Taiyo Yuden printables (both white hub printable and silver inkjet non-hub printables) so i do not know about the Ritek printable disc issue that you and seemingly many others have experienced regarding longevity...

at least for ME and ME ALONE regarding RitekG05s, i have the Ridata Ritek non-printables, or "regular" ones...they were the ones i first started using years ago when i began my dvd burning journey and they held up to this day...maybe my "batch" was a freak-of-nature-one-time-thing, but i bought 600 in bulk at the time for a good price~ it was shipped in a white "RIDATA" case/box directly from the factory :) even had "Ridata" tape to seal the box~ LOL

anyways, before i digress further, i guess i was really "lucky" to have received the "good" G05s, my Taiyo Yudens now are "better", but i'm not one to complain about a purchase 2+ years ago that still play today~ :)

i wish you the best of luck for future media purchases, regardless of brand or manufacturer...you seem to be a "target" in receiving bad media for your hard earned $$$...i feel for ya and i'm sorry that it happens to such a nice guy...

docTY~

I've had good success with my Ritek G05's as well, the non printable kind. Hey Doc, I've burned let's say around 110 backups on TYG02 with no coasters. Out of your 2700+ burns on TY media, how many coasters would you guess you have? I know it would be difficult to count, but if anybody knows how many coasters they've had after years of burning, it's you lol. Thanks for the info.
