Ritek are not the only printables that I have had deterioration problems with. All of my BeAll and Lead Data printable discs went bad in fairly short order. Of course those aren't very good brands anyway. The only printable discs that I have never had this problem with that I know for sure were Prodsic S03 and S04. These weren't always the best discs, but I seemed to have pretty good luck with them. I haven't been able to detect any deterioration on these at all. I have on some of the Prodisc MCC 01RG20 and MCC 02RG20, however. I wouldn't have expected it on them since MCC are the people who make Verbatim. I don't have any TY that are old enough to matter, but I'll take your word that they hold up well.

So I have to have Nero.
Only if you want the booktype dvd-rom feature to work with DVD Shrink. You can always burn an iso with DVD Decrypter and booktype to dvd rom useing it but like alkohol stated you will have to set it to booktype to dvd-rom prior to every burn. There is not an eeprom setting for NEC drives like with lite-on's. I very seldom use DVD Shrink anymore but since you said you were useing it I was only trying to point you in the right direction for booktyping to dvd-rom.

I burned my first great TY002!
I may be wrong but isn't TY002 a DVD-R? I thought TY dvd+r's coded out as YUDEN's.

hehe...@mort

i think he was just giving the "shortened version" of the media ID coding...even "TY002" is NOT a correct coding, on an 8x DVD-R Taiyo Yuden, the CORRECT one is "TYG02" :)

and yes you are correct in the 8x DVD+R format that it would be preceeded by YUDEN000T02 <~~~the last number WILL change once the 16x DVD+R comes out here in the U.S...which will be soon...it will be YUDEN000T03 at that time~

@tokijin

hmm...honestly, i got MOST of my coasters early on before i got ALL this burning stuff down to an art on my setup...yes, while i have NOT tried EVERY program out there available, i just stick with what works well for ME...

my "guess" as to how many "coasters" i've made on Taiyo Yuden media in over 3,000 burns now (the count in my sig. is AS OF LAST YEAR) i would probably say a very impressive thirty (30) or so, give or take maybe 10??? (this is NOT counting the DVD+R that would not play in standalones before i learned about booktyping to dvd-rom) that's STILL less than 1-2% coaster ratio once i got the hang of it...i've already put 4 burners to rest in the last 3 years, easily over 700 burns on EACH of them, before they finally said "no more"... :)

i've had an almost equal percentage with Verbs too, but have not used as many as i have TYs...and on the Verbs, i'm limited to like 98% DVD+R format (MCC003/MCC004), i've only used like 200 of the DVD-R format, actually became a "dvd+r" guy after mort81's advice early on when i first joined AfterDawn, so my kudos and credit goes to mort81~ :) i learned from him initially~

since then and thousands of DVD+R discs later, i am here now...helping when i can...almost ALL my advice on here is from PERSONAL experience, so i've had my fair share of the bad happen to me as well, i've actually used the CMC MAGs, Princos, Prodisc, Optodisc, TDK-UTTER CRAP, among MANY other manufacturers that most people have only heard "myths" about...FAKE Taiyo Yudens in a variety of flavors, etc..etc..

i guess i'm a "media connoisseur" of sorts, just a hobby of mine that blossomed into a passion/addiction after i started getting interested in it... :)

good day to you all~

docTY~

Thank you for the help with booktyping.
I will give Nero another shot now that I got different media(to be honest I really like Nero, and I was hopin the OEM that came with the drive would work after I get the proper updates). I will reinstall it and get all the ASPI and stuff. If it won't work than I will lookinto getting the modiffied firmware( I guess I am still a little shy about doing it,maybe because I don't know much about) But so far, after spening 100s of hours on this forum,on any thread, I haven't find any mention of any drive messed up after being flashed with modfirm. So, I guess it should not be much of a deal.
Thanx

All of my dvdrw drives are bitseting/booktyping ready and have their own booktype utility available but I have read many threads regarding NEC's and modified f/w and have not seen any problems or complaints only praise. I'm not 100% sure but you might be able to use dvdinfopro to automatically set your drive to burn all DVD+R discs to dvd-rom therefor not being required to set to dvd-rom prior to every burn as with DVD Decrypter.

I use hacked/modified firmware on my Pioneer 109 to enable booktyping, and it only makes a great drive excellent in my opinion. These guys/gals that are doing the modding know their stuff!!!

This is exactly what I did with my NEC 3550a. I used Liggy and Dees 1y4 rpc1 firmware and flashed. Then set it with DVDinfo pro. Now it automatically sets the booktype to DVD-ROM with every burn on +R media.

I only wish I could do this with the LG. Not supported by DVD info pro so I have to manually reset with every burn in decrypter or imgburn.

9mmruger1,

Congrats on the addict status. Now you can officially be abused like the rest of us addicts and mods. ;) Also thanks for the confirmation on NEC's and dvdinfopro. Like I stated since I don't have an NEC I wasn't 100% sure.

Hey guys correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that NEC 3550 will only booktype DVD+RDL but not DVD+R DVDR+RW, for that you need the mod fw.

Very true. And I know that some of the questions that we come up with(we, the newbees:)!) might be redundent, but I honestly appreciate you all for sharing your knowledge and all your help. My booktyping problem->well I came to the conclusion that "if is not broken, why fix it?" My burned DVD+Rs are great for now and they play on my both standalone dvd players, (and to my kowledge, at least the old Magnavision that I have should not play DVD+R; this still puzzles me, I have to check other players)

As regarding to the media quality, I can definetely say that I am out of the dark! Thanks Doc, and everyone else!

Well, I was upgraded to "junior", but in fact I'am addicted to AD!
So, yes, I will be around(even if all my next 100000 burns will go smooth as silk!), maybe at some point I can share with others what I've learned from you.
