Only way I can get around with is if I put the Wii game in the drive before Windows has loaded...

I now get "error you may have a faulty drive" bullshit i do, i have been reading everywhere of people having this issue, but have not come across anybody resolving it yet. Have tried it with 2.1 as well but still same error message, really getting annoying now.....
Yes i have correct DVD, GDR8164B and I have done loads of backups, but now i get this error message all the time.
If you have or have had this problem and fixed it, how about sharing the secret with me lol.
Would it have anything to do with SSBB PAL, as this was the disc I was trying to backup when error messages started, now all discs do it. ( Some sort of Evil Nintendo backup software destroying virus )
Check you HDD space. I have received the same faulty drive error before and that was the problem for me. Also I wait for rawdump to open before loading a wii disc into the drive. That kept it from freezing up for me.

I just bought a Wii yesterday. It is brand new, so what mod chip would I need? I have done alot of research and cannot come up with an answer as to which mod chip would DEFINATELY work on a system this new. Thanks

yotaiji yeah your system is tring to read the disk and it won't giveup till you eject the disk. Try using FRII Dump it seems to work better and it's a dos based program so no windows crap running in the background. i got at 8163b drive cheap too,$40. I'm still unable to backup wii games. i'm building a new system soon and i'll make it a barebone sys with minamal stuff installed and only that drive installed and see what happens. I'm thinking it's an old drive and the laser isin't as strong as it used to be. There is a way to adjust the strength of the laser i've done it on my XBOX 1.1 so that'll be my next step.
Wii D9Pro, XBOX 1.0 120GB, XBOX 360 FW Flash, PSP CFW 4.01-m33-2, DS Cyclos.

Ha i am talking dirt cheap. I got each of the 5 drives for less than 10 dollars used + 5 dollars shipping. Wii just came out in korea and modchips for the system just started popping up. korean wii is totally different from rest of world. The backing up scene hasnt developed. I got a steal on these drives.

Hey
Still having problems... And boy am I getting extremely irritated...
"Windows trying to read the disc when it really can't" ?
Are you talking in relation to the failed dump or the freezing?
For one reason or another my Comp seems to be happier today and it's not freezing when I insert Wii game whilst running... but anyway that's not the biggest annoyance for me anymore.
What's REALLY (and i mean REEEEEALLY) got me going is that i can't dump ANYTHING, i have tried both "MoH Vanguard" and "Wii Sports" and NEITHER of them dump... i even got the bloody error others had spoken of above with Raw Dump...
I searched around and found Friidump and got that dumping MoH and it all seemed to be going fine until it got to 95% where it just came up with a "windows error report". I try resuming the dump and it looks for the seeds, comes up with the details (game, manufacturer etc.) and then just says "cannot prepare dumper". I also tried copying Rawdump2.0 into the Friidump folder and using that to resume the partially dumped file, it does for a little bit but once again, as described in original post, it just freezes...
I left it in this frozen state last night for a good 10 hours (using Rawdump the whole way) and NOTHING!!!!!
Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on? Because it appears i'm not the only one getting this issue... IS it a new copy protection thing Nintendo has released? Becuase others seem to be getting the same issue with SSBB. If so I won't be AS peeved because at least that means someone will get around it in the near future... Or is it a computer issue? which I can't really see because like I said FRESH INSTALL OF XP.
My next step is to take the drive out and try it in another computer.
If that fails then I have run out of ideas!!!

Well i think my last resort will be to use the USB Gecko and have a game backed up in 40 min instead of 4-8 hours.

Use RAWDUMP.....IMGBURN....and Verbatim DVD-R discs...you will never have a problem....put the rom drive in an external enclosure if you have to..for gods sake save yourselves the bloody headaches!! At 2hrs or less, you'll have a perfect copy for your modded Wii...I have done just on 40 copies of Wii games now ( thanks Video Ezy ).. and ALL of them work!! So what if the drive costs you $70 bucks on eBay?? Dont be such tight-arses!! You only have to copy TWO games and you're in front!! Simple!
Well.... I used rawdump NO SUCCESS, I have harddrive with nothing on it except Windows, Firefox, Virus protection and Burning Software NO SUCCESS. I have an 8164 NO SUCCESS.
So it doesn't exactly seem as simple as you describe for someone whom it's not working for...
Only success I have had is burning, and that was with using Ashampoo Burning Suite at 4x on Intact DVD-R DVDs

well i for one am very happy at your success, but i AM using an 8164, i AM using RawDump, and i AM using Verbatim, and I used to be able to copy Wii games with this combo, it seems that since trying to copy SSBB, which the original will not play in my modded Wii, but now I cannot even start to read a Wii game anymore, so i would guess that somehow SSBB has something on it which has somehow disabled copying, i would love for you to tell me i am wrong, but i cannot think of any other reason..............

I have the drive GWA4164BE113. I assume 113 is the firmware version. I tried to use rawdump and it doesn't seem to work. I tried changing the drive to PIO mode. Should I put another firmware on it or something? I tried searching for hours before I posted. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I have just bought a new Wii, and I am looking for a way to be able to "backup" my disks so that they dont get scratched. If possible, i can burn them, or what would be even better is to be able to copy them to an external HDD and then plug that in, but I know that might be pushing it. Does anyone know how to get a comp to recognise the disk? I tried to just do an outright DVD copy using nero, but winhows couldnt find the disk for nero to be able to cache. Do I need to buy a mod chip? I am not sure about all of this, as this is the first Nintendo product I have ever had. would someone be able to provide me with the types of software that I need to copy the games, and then the types of mod chips and thing I will need to play them. Are they all double layer disks?

Please READ the guide posted on page 1 post 1
Since this thread is called "HOW to backup WII GAMES" it seems redundant to ask "how to backup wii games?" which you just did. If you still have questions after reading the step by step guide, check any of the other questions asked in the previous 94 pages.
Im not directly insaulting you, but what is it with the youth of today who dont read?

It's called lazy. They feel if they just ask it will be handed to them. If they don't understand then they should not have their wii modded. It will be more of a pain then fun.

Way back in April (page 90)Kenbot posted about backing up directly from Wii console via either a SD Gecko card or USB Gecko.
Has anyone tried these methods??
Does any one know if these are available in AUS?
I am not sure I understand what a gecko is.
Can anyone help??

Yeah i have the USB Gecko and i'm still working on figureing it out there is no simple software to run it you have to compile some files and run homebrew from the wii. i've also installed DVD Dumper 2.1 on my Wii and you can dump a game over WIFI via HTTP but everytime i do it it only downloads 346MB and that's it. it also allows you to dump to SD card or USB mass storage but not sucsessful yet.
Wii D9Pro, XBOX 1.0 120GB, XBOX 360 FW Flash, PSP CFW 4.01-m33-2, DS Cyclos.
