Backup= Decryption + transcoding + burning
Skip transcoding if you're burning DL

Decryption Software: DVDFab Decrypter, RI4M (has to have DVD Decrypter and Shrink already loaded), DVD Decrypter (obsolete unless used in RI4M), Shrink (multiple purpose program, decryption (obsolete) and transcoding)

Transcoding software: DVD Shrink

Burner Software:DVD Decrypter (dual purpose, has burner ware), and ImgBurn (the updated Decrypter burner ware)

Take a peek at the quick start guide at http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php

DVDFab Decrypter is the program used for just ripping. DVDFab Platinum is the full program capable of doing the full backup (rip, transcode, and burn). Try ripping with DVDFab Decrypter and Processing the files with FixVTS before trying to transcode.

Don't mean to butt in because if anyone can help you Pacman can.
If you are a real newbie to these programs, I would suggest you
take a different movie and learn to use these programs. Then do
Pursuit Of Happyness. It is possible to do this movie with these
programs, but it isn't the one I would chose to learn on because
even after having done this process with a bunch of previous movies
this one was a challenge. If you are just learning that in itself
is enough to frustrate you terribly. Once you get comfortable with
the programs then it just turns into a challenge that is fun.
Good luck.

There is a more simple method, but the setup is a little more involved. No problem as long as directions are followed. It uses DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter as part of the system. If interested click
Here for the freeware software pack and instructions.

PacMan777 ,
As you know DVDFab Dec. is the ripper for DVDFAB Plat. DVDFAB will usually read if DVDD fails in using Ripit4Me but if that fails then...New DVD needed

georgejr,
Looks like you are having a read error. Try cleaning it and then if that fails then you can try Ripit4Me but I think you either have a bad mastering press or some scratches on the DVD. If you do then exchange it for a better copy

I'm aware that the decryption software DVDFab Decrypter comes from DVDFab Platinum. I own the DVDFab Platinum as well as having a copy of DVDFab Decrypter. Both are good programs. However they sometimes run into a problem bypassing some of the heavier copy protection. Occasionally the files need extra processing for compliance that DVDFab doesn't take care of. In those instances FixVTS is a handy program to process DVDFab Decrypter ripped files. Since RI4M incorporates FixVTS code, I prefer using it and letting it do all the necessary processing with the one program.

OK, this is pissing me off
i) ripped to HDD with DVDFab Decrypter 3.0.9.6
ii) stripped previews with VOB 2.1.2
iii) tried to burn to DVD with DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

All seemed to be working well but burn process just hangs at app. 22% & need to cancel.

Have VSO Inspector running on original disk and has reported some "reading of sector" errors so far.

Suggestions/similar experiences pls?

Depending on the severity of sector errors, they can prevent recording. I've had it happen to me and the only alternative is using a new disc if you want the entire DVD. Sometimes the errors aren't in the movie titles and the bad sectors can be edited out, if the decryption software will rip. Trying RI4M in movie + menu or movie only rip mode might get it, if it will rip.

this might be why it hangs in shrink
try the versions 2.1.3 beta 10 and that should work

Wow! So I read all 4 pages of this topic. Lots of info.
I've been backing up my DVD's for a few years now, and some of the newer ones, like Sony's "the PURSUIT of HAPPYNESS" with newer protection schemes are creating coasters (bad DVD's) for me.

So I've tried RipIt4Me 1.7.1.0, which uses (automatically calls) DVD Shrink 3.2, and RI4M seems to have FixVTS embedded within its own code. RI4M did not work (whole DVD or MOVIE ONLY to hard drive folder).

FYI, I've also tried CloneDVD 2.9.0.3, 1Click DVD Copy Pro 2.4.1.8, DVD Fab Platinum 3.0.9.8, DVD Fab Decrypter 3.0.9.6. I even tried using DVD43 3.9.0, and DVD Region+CSS Free 5.9.8.5.

Basically I've either gotten results with skippy video and eventual stop on a regular DVD player, or whole chapters missing. I've always burnt at 1X, just to be safe.

Lots of success with other DVD's just this Happyness driving me nuts. Any help from you guys (seems like PacMan777 and 300bowler are serious experts!) on "exact versions and steps for success on this one" would be great!

in PURSUIT of HAPPYNESS,
Jim

What kind of blank media are you using? I would suggest bumping your burn speed up to minimum 4X (I would actually go to 8x or higher personally)and have you tried to rip with AnyDVD? I'm surprised you are having these problem wit this movie especially with the programs you have used... It should have been no problem with the latest versions. Lastly, if you try all the suggestions you have read and it still won't work, I think you have a bad press, get another copy and try that one.

If you have AnyDVD, then that combo of AnyDVD and CloneDVD should do the trick without the need to rip to HDD. As Res2cue said I would bump up the speed to 8X especially on newer burners and 16X media (good media- TYs,or MIJ Sonys and Maxells or Verbatims)! make sure DVD43 is disabled.

Well, got a brand spanking new original PoH DVD and tried again. Rip & VOB appeared to go smoothly but hung on burning once again (26%).

Then used DVDFab to rip only main movie, VOB, & burn and appears to have worked (although I haven't watched it through yet).

I did Pursuit of Happiness (region 1) with RI4M v1.7.1.0, encoded with DVD RB Pro/CCE SP, and burned the ISO output with Nero Express. I don't know why I don't let ImgBurn burn the output for single tasks. Too much a creature of habit I guess. I used Sony +R 16X media manufactured by Sony in Taiwan. The backup was flawless, at least to the eye and I have a bigscreen TV.

There's obviously a bug in the works somewhere. One thing some people neglect to do is turn off other decryption software, i.e. DVD43, AnyDVD, and DVD Region Free, when doing the backup. Ignoring the warning doesn't help the decryption. Normally when Shrink does the quick analysis the RI4M processed files they are compliant.

Out of curiosity, are you using the 1-Click or Wizard mode?

The latest DVDFab Decrypter also does well. Sometimes the files need processing with FixVTS. Once again leave off the driver type decryption software.

Once you get a clean set of source files it shouldn't matter what transcoding, encoding, or editing program you use, the program should work. Editing though can cause structural errors if not done properly or using the right software. (Shrink is one of the right softwares.) Have you tried viewing the source files to see if you have a problem with the ripped source?

It's hard to magically come up with a solution when you're using a method that has been proven to work on the majority of systems, including my own. The standard fixes can be suggested. You've already received some of those.

Usually a flawed disc will cause a cyclic redundancy error. But I'd do a Read Test scan to eliminate a flawed source. Bad sectors show up on a graph. Too many bad sectors and you get flaws, more and you are unable to do a backup. I've found flawed presses that will play well, but won't record. Once you know you have a good source, then it becomes a process or elimination. The options are hardware, software, and user error.

Another thing to do is let us see the info from a check of your recordable DVD using DVD Identifier (free, just google). The manufacturer info is what we'd like to see. Then let us know what you're using for a PC, manufacturer and model. System resources are also a help, CPU and speed, RAM amount and amount free (taskmanager), hard drive(s) and free space, the optical drive model used for burning. With that info up front it will save a lot of questions along the way.

So, do the read scan, DVD Identifier ID check, and supply your system resources. Then we can go from there.

Ok to answer some of the questions. I ruined a lot of blank DVD's on HAPPYNESS. I have Sony DVD-R 16X media, which has always worked well. A Plextor PX-708A DVD RW drive. I slowed down to 1X burn speed thinking a slower surer burn would help, as a few times it has in the past, especially with XBOX game DVD's. My latest try is with RipIt4Me (versions in my previous post about 5 spaces back here), no DVD43 (nor others), 1-Click Mode, main movie only, compressing to a single DVD5. I previewed the VOB's and all looked fine. So I'm burning now at 1X again (all still in the 1-Click RI4M string of events) to see how it plays on TV. I'll let you know how it goes. It will be really funny if juat a plain ole 1-Click on RipIt4Me works!

MillerJD,
The Movie is not that hard to do. I did it w/ RI4M and My Son did it w/ DVDFAB Decrypter. If it is failing w/ you then I surmise it might be either a bad mastering press or your burner is having a problem as no one burns at 1X especially w/ a Plexy.

It may be funny but it did for me, at least in part. I got the cleaned and compliant files and used an encoder to shrink the files. Shrink with movie only or movie and menu does just about as well. I used Nero which is a common burner with Shrink.

As for burn speeds Car.Mike called it. 1X wouldn't be necessary unless you have a bad burner. I've got a Plex and burn at a slow 6X. I've burned at Max by accident a few times and I've not had problems. I prefer not pressing my luck though.

Ripit4me worked just fine. I always burn at max, haven't had a problem with any of my back-ups.
