Has you all know the ps3 was only put on sale in the UK about 8 weeks ago and I am sure I'm not the only person trying this,
We did have a few problems with this tutorial.
I am not sure if the dvd burn speed was too hight or there a diffents between the US and UK models of the ps3.
So we use fedora instead.
It down load in 3 hours (350kbs) unlike the yellow dog witch took 13 hours at 85kbs
It work first time with no problems, just follow the install word for word.
Its luckey I got 3 dvd's for £1.50 from tescos.
In the end we download 2 copys of yellowdog and 1 copy of fedora,
Total of about 13gb.
But if you don't have a good unstanding of computers not try this.
I did find the link below easy to use.

Theres no mod for the PS3 yet...
The XMB is the menu you scroll through, music photo video etc.

Hello all;
This may sound dumb, but why would you want to install Linux on the PS3? Does it do something special? Thanks...

Hey I just put YDL on my friends PS3 and when the screens comes up its split into 3 parts so the screens are squeezed together and can't see anything clearly. Theres an interface in the middle and I can see halves of the same interface on the right and left sides of my friends TV. It looks like it works fine I just need to fix the image. I am not sure if it is my friends TV or I have to edit kboot.conf and was wondering how to do that if I can't manuever my self thru the menus because I can't see anything.

Alright, igave in and i'm finally asking for help.
I have a 60gb ps3. I formated that harddrive aloting 10 gig to otherOS.
I downloaded ydl 5.0.1, burned it to a DVD, and have had no problems with the installation up until i get to "2 minutes remaining"
It'll spit out and error "The package gedit-2.14.3-1.ppc cannot be open. This is due to a missing file or perhaps a corrupt package. If you are installing from CD media this usuall means the CD media is corrupt or the CD drive is unable to read the media. Press "retry" to try again (reboot) or (retry)
alright no biggie, i reboot, leaving the DVD in and it will reboot back to kboot, then load up installation again and it will ask me if i would like to reinstall or patch, or repair or something (its a grapical interface)
I choose to repair/patch whatever the install goes through and it completes successfully and spits out the DVD.
It tells me to remove any media and click reboot.
It reboots, and it goes to kboot. I hit tab and the only options are "install" "textinstall" "rescue" "textrescue"
wtf am i doing wrong, i have been doing this over and over again and i must be missing something. I'm not a whining little 12 year old, i'm a dorky 23 year old college kid that wants to figure this out.
Thanks alot
Dave
my girlfriend still thinks i'm a nerd, but at least i have my ps3 now.

I'm stuck on this part:
Your PS3 will now scan the USB Jump Drive, for the Bootloader Installer & Bootloader.
4. Confirm the discovery of "/ps3/otheros/otheros.self".
5. Press "X" on the controller to start the installation (The PS3 screen blanks while pulling files from the USB Jump Drive, so don't worry about it going blank)
6. You will now be prompted with: "Other OS Installer Version x.y.z" ==> Start ... and then: Controller check ==> License Agreement ==> Install Completed ... and then: "Back"
but when I scan the PS3 sees otheros.bld and i click X and Other OS installer version x.yz does not come up but i do install something. So I click start other OS and then the linux thing came up and it said "cant find partition" or something like that. and it asks for kboot: it keeps going to that. What do I do?

Have downloaded what i hope is the current iso file for ydl. but,,,it appears to be in rar format?? Have decompressed that, but amongst the resulting files are further rar files??
Do these need decompressing as well, if so which of the decompression options should i take,,,decompress "here", decompress to the "folder name" quoted by WinRAR etc etc..
I have tried decompressing the further rar files, to the "here" option, and that appears to work ok, but when i burn the image to dvd and study the files it then contains, those "extra" decompressed rar files do not appear to be on the dvd????? Also, i note that the only iso file Nero recognises when attempting the burn is the original ydl rar download??
Are they one and the same thing?? Can anyone clarify where i'm going wrong and exactly what needs to be done as i dont want to end up with a broken ps3.
thanks in anticipation for any help given...........dave.

I installed YDL on my ps3 when I had a SDTV (480i). Now I have an HDTV (hooked up via HDMI) and I don't know how to switch YDL to 1080i. I need exact, step by step instructions, from boot to finish, because I have no clue what I'm doing, as I am brand new to linux (I'm surprised I installed it, even with a guide).
Also, when I boot the ps3 in linux, it wont go directly to the GUI. Instead it asks me to "enter runlevel", and when I type "5" and hit enter, it boots to the GUI. Again, I need step by step instrucions.
Thanks!

Also, after I get this stuff fixed, I want to update my version to 5.0.1, so I can use the WI/FI function. Can you make a guide on how to update it and set up the wi/fi too?
