Hi guys
I'm having a bit of trouble installing this OS.
The only thing I have done differently is I used the latest version of Yellow Dog Linux instead of the 5.0 (I think I used 5.1 or something).
I did everything as instructed, and I got to that bit with the pengiuns at the top, and it got passed the kboot stage, then it did something else then came up with an error message saying something like "unable to find disc with file system on", and it terminated the install then I thought it had bricked my PS3, but I just had to do the thing when you hold down the power button to boot in gameOS again.
Have I done it wrong because I need a different bootloader for the 5.1 or something like that?
I'm scared of trying again as I fear it might brick my PS3, any help from u overly smart guys lol? Cheers

I have the same problem..
I was informed that after the 1.80 update,
we don't need the otheros.self, but just others.bld
But i have been having problems installing Linux,
I would install otheros.bld then reset my ps3 changing os mode to
"Other OS", then during installation screen (the dos-like screen with two penguins on the top left corner) it keeps saying that it is unable to locate some Linux installation files.
I have been trying for past week now and i sitll haven't had installed Linux on my ps3.
Can anyone help us with these problems?
Is there new files that we need to download?
Or is it the linux file that we need to re-download?
People please help!

having a problem with this as well, using 5.0 i get to kboot: then get
cannot determine the file type of /mnt/tmp/9c1172bde5292ce417e9539f0b7ce67c//ppc/ppc64/vmlinux-ps3
1: syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
using 5.01 i get exactly the same, is this a problem with the otheros file i'm using, or a problem with both downloads? anyway to fix this, on a side note, ubuntu works fine, although its slow, the sound is crap, and i cant open any memory cards in it

Okay, I've sorted out my problem now, if anyone is looking for a solution to the problem I had then its simple; turn off your PS3 and then hold the powering on button, you will hear 2 beeps and then you will be directed back to the game os. You will then be prompted to make use of your HDMI cable and select your maximum resolution.
Another thing; i'm a noob, I kinda figured that installing Linux would be a breeze but if you are like me a noob I advise you to read this tutorial and if you don't fully understand other tutorials until you do understand, seriously it works out a lot better in the long run and you will know what to expect.
I am currently installing Linux and its worked this time.
Its looking great so far on 1080i, can't wait to get into it!
Good luckk!

I am having a problem.
I can get into the installation without a problem, I run the
kboot: installtext
I get past making my password, then I am asked about the partitions. I am not sure which one I should use. I tried to use:
Remove all Linux partitions
Remove all partitions
both times I got to the "Installing Linux this may take several minutes". The screen stays with that window up for about 2 or 3 minutes, then I get an error. it says something along the lines of "Cannot continue (something about the cd) is corrupt.
then it tells me to reboot.
This is really starting to annoy me to no end. Can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong?
BTW - I got my YDL 5.0.1 from PS3wiki it was 3.4GB and is the "SDTV" version. (As I dont have a HDTV)
Phat PSP #1 - 3.40 OE-A
Phat PSP #2 - 3.40 OE-A
Slim PSP - 3.60 M33
PS3 - 1.93 With Kubuntu 7.04

Ok wondering if someone can help me here... I managed to install linux eventually I done it using the 5.1 version. i tried to install the xautoconfig file but it said that a newer version is already installed. When I manage to get onto linux using startx picture is all flickery and it seems to think that my screen is longer vertically and horizontally than it really is so i cant see the windows very good because half of them are chopped off, ive tried going into resolution and display settings but there are no options...Also i would like to set up the wireless connection but can't because its not possible to apply my WEP key because half of the window is chopped off... the other problem is that when i turn on the PS3 YDL does'nt automatically load up, i always have to go thru the startx way..also when i try to restart the the screen just goes blank.

Make sure that you are connected to the internet, and that the PS3 can access the network. Check that!
