If you're having update "issues" read below
Step 1: Run the update that SMG requires prior to installing the
1.9g fix.
Step 2: Run the 1.9g fix (burn this image w/ ImgBurn which is free).
Step 3: You will be prompt to run the update by either using a GC
controller (press A button) or by pressing reset (I was
using a GC controller for my update.
Step 4: You will see a % bar at the bottom. Once this update
completes you MUST run the second update!!! You will see a
WARNING to not turn off your console during the second
update. Once this is done you will receive a message to
insert SMG and to restart the system.
Step 5: ENJOY the game!!
Most people I see having issues w/ updates and/or fixes only run the first update thinking that the second one's the same thing; it's not.
* I did this on a US console w/ the NTSC (US) image.
** The 1.9g update is in .rar format. Extract the .rar file to a
specified directory. You will have 4 files: JAP, US, & PAL (I
believe). Burn the .ISO for your console's region and burn using
ImgBurn. That's it! I hope this helps.

I did the 1.9g first, then inserted SMG and it updated just the one time, says I have 3.0U then when I reboot and try to run SMG, it still has the error. I tried to redo 1.9g and ran the test and it says it is working. I am lost unless I need the 3.1u update and not sure how to get that as my wii is not connected to the net.

You need to run it under dos prompt.
I placed the 1.9g update on my drive D: directory along with the filechop.exe file. I then go to START/RUN type cmd and return and the DOS prompt window will come up.
I then typed D: to change the directory from C: directory to D: directory.
I then typed filechop.exe bootdisc.us.iso 1459978240 Press Return and it pads the update to 1.35GB disc.
If you only have a MAIN C: directory then place the update and the filechop file in your C: directory and type
filechop.exe bootdisc.us.iso 1459978240 Then Return in the DOS Prompt Window.

B: yes
Aboug the 1.9g just unrar from the file the vers that belongs to you, i guess u are ntsc, then unrar it and burn it with imgburn and it will be a 1.5gb file on your disk, really easy mate, anything else ill try to help you.

I have never padded my update discs... i just burn em using imgburn and i have never had a problem.
what is the whole disc padding thing about anyways?

Okay guys. I just want to make sure I've got the ordering right. I know someone has posted above suggesting a strategy if you're having problems.
Question: My wii is 3.0u, do I need 3.1u.
Order as I understand:
Load 1.9g disk
update
reboot
stick in SMG
update
play
Is this correct?

do i have to use the 1dt wiikey updates? to ruin this new one for the SMG fix? i updated the fix to play SMG says it was succesful but when i try putting in the game the lil wii symbol just keeps spining

Anybody got SMG to run on a Japanese Wii (NTSC-J)?
I am having troubles, my PAL buddies done it though
Need info on NTSC-J wii and SMG if anyone has had any experience

I'm glad I'm not the only one having the upgrade the problem of the update not working. I've narrowed it down 2 a few factors.
1. Maybe I don't have a original wiikey, maybe I have wiinja or something. But if that was the case that why did both updates say sucessful?
2. The update still recognizes the game as being unauthorized. Maybe if I somehow clear the update then update again it may be bypassed by the 1.9g update.
3. I running an older version of the nintendo firmware. Not that it should matter but perhaps?

Just want to say thanks for the quick response from penbralat,larrylje and lancerx. That really helps, and I shall put those tips to test as soon as I get hold of SMG..man I can't wait.
And one more question, I'm currently on 2.2U firmware for the wii, so will it be ok for me to update my wiikey to 1.9g first? Or do I need to be 3.0U to begin with? Thanks a bunch guys

Could I have a fake Wiikey? on the initial test once it reaches 100% it says
error test failed! Check your connections and try again

Just wanted to report some success for you guys(for people with similar hardware).
Wii: NTSC(U) 3.0U
Originally had wiikey firmware 1.9b
updated from 1.9b to 1.9g
stuck in v1.3 config disk and reset region free(not sure if this is necessary)
rebooted
put in SMG
click gamechannel
performed update
game works no problem

I made this post about two pages back, but didn't really get any conclusive answers, so I'm trying again.
Does anyone know if SMG contains the region update? i.e. Will running the NTSC-U version of the game on a modded NTSC-J console brick the Wii?
I am guessing that the proper procedure to run an NTSC-U SMG on an NTSC-J console is to obtain a copy of the NTSC-J game, run the NTSC-J update, update the modchip, and then run a WiiBrickBlocked version of the NTSC-U game? And I'm not even sure if that will work because of the new copy protection ...
It's great that many NTSC-U users have gotten this to work, but in terms of region compatibility, this new situation is a hellhole. I don't have an NTSC-J copy of the game to work with right now, so I'm kinda stuck.
Can anyone shed some light on the region compatibility of SMG? Thank you!
(And if anyone knows where to obtain an NTSC-J image of the game, please PM me.)

For those having issues with the 1.9g update on other forums it says this (Which is also covered on a previous post above).
run the update 1.9g disc...
It performs a drive test and will ask you to "to press A or reset"
Then it performs a FLASH UPDATE TEST after this It repeats the drive check and shuts the drive down.
Then asks you "to press A or reset" again and doe's the actual FLASH UPDATE.
I haven't received my Wiikey yet to install but this is what other forums say to do. So maybe users having the error #001 after the update is just running the FLASH UPDATE TEST and haven't actually flashed the update.
The users that had no issues are at 3.1U firmware where I see a few users that are having issues are at 3.0U firmware, This could be an issue but might not. Plus a few have said they did the drive check then the update and thats it. You actually perform the update 2 times the first time is a test the second time it actually does the flashing.

yea, its pretty simply guys. for me all it was was a matter of burning the iso, plugging in the gamecube controller, and hitting A a lot. If you're unsure just hit A. from what i remember you can even hit A to do the reboot process after the homer sound.

Yeah that's all you have to do. Just take the .iso that is the region of your Wii and burn it with ImgBurn at 4X with good media.
Then just put it in the Wii, Press A on a GC controller (or the Wii's Reset button so I've heard) and let it do its' thing.

Hi guys, first time poster but long time lurker.
Any reports of bricks yet? Place I am downloading from says if you pop the disc in and your wii is below 3.0e console will brick.
Currently downloading...hopefully done by morning :( (torrents are fun).
Have my Wii at 3.1u (actually had to take it to a friend's place to get a working connection), flashed my wiikey to 1.9g, and now just waiting on my game. To be sure, I won't need to update the wiikey again right before popping the SMG disk in, right?

My Wii is semi-bricked, cause of the update.. i cant get in settings anymore :( i have a PAL console.. does anyone know how i can get my 3.1U firmware to 3.1E.. i mean.. what game has a newer PAL firmware then galaxy?

hey guys, I just wanted to ask anyone that got SMG to successfully work, I haven't updated my wiikey yet before, hence it is probs the 1.0 firmware or whatever the original version is called. I hear a lot of ppl were on 1.9b firmware first before updating to 1.9g so I just wanted to ask if i needed to update to 1.9b first, or can i just skip that and update to 1.9g straight off?? Did anyone do it like this? Thanks for any help in advance.
Also, did everyone that get SMG to work update to 3.1U first (via online or by SMG disc?) before updating the wiikey firmware to 1.9g? Or is it the other way round.
Sorry for the questions, its just that I want to get the order right and I don't want to semi-brick my wii agn. I appreciate any help :)
Btw NickE83 - did you not update your wii via online? (coz then it would be automatically 3.1E as far as I know)

i updated to 1.9 b first and afther that i did 1.9g. But BEFORE the 1.9b i did the 3.1U update..
And i did my update from the disc of SMG, which is 3.1U.. where can i update to 3.1E?? cause i cant enter settings anymore..

Seeing as how SMG hasn't been released yet, I don't think that there is a PAL game with newer firmware. This is still a LEAKED copy of the game.
