@ bahhrito
from what i know theres not a PAL version of the game out there yet. I know that before playing I had 3.1 already and SMG still did an update, so this update is similar to the MP3 update. If you're worried about semi-bricking and you know your version is Pal I would not play it. Get a version you know if NTSC-U. Regardless of what firmware you have SMG is going to update. Be on the safe side.
@NickE83
I can't say I feel sorry for you man. It was a pretty dumb move on your part to play that game. It's hard for me to believe that people are still semi-bricking or bricking their Wii's. The only thing you can do is wait on the next major release, prolly SSBB. Just be glad you didn't completely brick.
@kkevin86
No, you do not need to update to 1.9b first, I didn't and it works like a charm. Check out the file size of both 1.9b and 1.9g, you can tell 1.9g is the entire version just by seeing that it's a slightly bigger file.

Wii: NTSC(U) 3.0U
Originally had wiikey firmware 1.9b
updated from 1.9b to 1.9g
stuck in v1.3 config disk and reset region free(not sure if this is necessary)
rebooted
put in SMG
click gamechannel
performed update
game works no problem
Did it update your Wii to 3.1u?
I was wondering about that as well.
My Wii is still currently at 3.0U. It worries me a tad about what the update does since there aren't any visible changes. I'm guessing it's a patch for video drivers or something like that.

Being that this update seems very similar to MP3 I'm going to take an educated guess and say no it doesn't. I could be wrong though. It shouldn't even matter though if your game is the same region as your Wii.

I don't think the update is anything special. Just something specific to SMG.

forget the whole 3.1U thing, it doesn't matter. get the wiikey update running, thats all you should be worried about. Once you get that running and pop in SMG the disc is going to update the Wii with whatever firmware is on the disc that it requires to run.

@blazen, i answered this same question at the top of the page. I know you're not new so I'm not trying to be a dick, just please read first. It helps from keeping the thread cluttered.

i updated with 3.1, but like I said it shouldn't matter. SMG is going to put whatever firmware that is on the disc onto the Wii anyways. The only thing anybody should be concerned about with the firmware on the game is whether or not you are using a Wii and game disc from the same region to avoid bricking.

I've heard of no one being successful with a 3.0. everyone has been succesful with a 3.1. so i just want some feedback on a 3.0.

once again, to my knowledge it shouldn't matter. I'd say do it with 2.2 and then pop in SMG to get the firmware. People keep asking if this works or not and I keep saying it shouldn't matter, by you doing it we'll see. Keep in mind this is NOT going to brick your Wii in any way so you have nothing to worry about.

Success! Having not updated my Wiikey since installed, I was a bit worried, but this update worked fine and now I'm good. Here's my story!
Lauch day Wii
Wii has all internet updates
Popped in SMG and let it update - but didn't work
Then ran the new beta Wiikey update
Popped in SMG, restarted and it booted right up!!
After the rebooted, I spent many hours exploring new galaxies in search of bowser and my lovely princess. Amazing game, best for wii yet.

cool rockstar3. Did you do the online update for the wii firmware first or did you update the wiikey firmware first? Also, what was your firmware for the wii to begin with?

Please read before you ask these questions. I really don't think it matters what Wii firmware you're on. I was on 3.0U, and after updating from 1.9g I put in the SMG disk, it updated, and then I played the game. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AT 3.1 TO PLAY THIS GAME. I did mine at 3.0U and it was fine. The SMG update doesn't even update the firmware from 3.0u to 3.1u. It does something, but we're not sure exactly. Probablyly something specific to SMG.

Still no luck. Made all updates Wii 3.1, WiiKey 1.9g, SMG Update, runs till mario is shot at and is flying through the air towards earth, then stops, says can't read disc. D/l and burned again, several burns, different speeds, different brands. Same issue? I went from wiikey original to 1.9g. Is the prominent iso good?

I did the Wiikey update to 1.9g first.. after that, I popped in SMG and it sat there in a disc loading screen as though it weren't reading the disc.
YOU MUST CLICK ON THAT SCREEN TO LAUNCH THE UPDATE.
after it updated and rebooted.. the SMG logo appeared.
Hope this helps.

@grkblood I really appreciate your help. And I really want to try it out, but SMG is only at 70% completion in the dl process so I can't try it out. Otherwise I would have put your recommendations to the test already..but I will do so as soon as I finally get hold of SMG. Hope that makes sense

Read the full post that other members give. If you did then you would have read the same as me.
1) He had all Internet updates
2) He then ran the SMG update and it didn't work.
3) He updated with the 1.9g hotfix and it worked.
This thread is getting pointless with the same questions being asked over and over again.
Do PAL/JAP users need to ask if this game disc will brick their Wii? It is just as any other previous game disc that has had Wii updates on it. So follow the same precautions as you did with past game disc that had updates on them.
