I used nero and verbatim +R DL.
Burned at 4x.
No Layer break or anything.
Works just fine.

Stay in your region folks.

I got it burned alright. When I tried to play, I got an error screen after the loading screen right at the front.

Any ideas?

which media do you guys recommend to use out of the verbatim ones?

Heres a link to a few I could get:

http://www.ciao.co.uk/Verbatim_DVD_R_DL_8_6_GB_2_4x__6607089

which one is the best most reliable?
I just realised I used Datawrite DL discs and not verbatim DL to burn lol. Which may also explain why i get that white screen after loading the game.

If you are getting Verbatim, make sure you go with the ones made in Singapore. People have reported that the ones made in India are far lower quality and do not work as well.

Two failed attempts:

Wiikey updated with 1.9g. Galaxy works.
Firmware updated.

The first attempt was from a burn I did with an ISO from the newsgroups. I didn't do the layer break. Not that I even understand what that is, which is probably why a lot of posters are asking if it is necessary despite a lot of short and inconsistent answers.

The second was another burn I did but it involved something different. I found a .DVD file that is allegedly intended to work with my ISO. The instructions say to put the ISO and the .DVD in the same folder and open the .DVD file in Imgburn. Burned successful, didn't work. It seems to get further though.

I did both burns at 2.4. I used Memorex DVD+R DL.

I get the same "could not read" error with both. The first one doesn't always read. Both get a couple of screens in before giving the error.

I'm going to try different media. I'm also going to wait a day or two for other ISOs to hit and maybe even give some of the torrents out there time to get more seeders.

Working! Burned Wiizards version from Usenet.

Stats:
Wii: US with D2ckey
Firmware: 3.2U
Media: HP DL Disc from Walmart
Software: Imgburn on max speed (did not fiddle with layer break)
About a 35 min burn, popped into Wii, kids are thrilled!

Thanks for all the help, you guys (and gals) rock!!

I think this is probably the end of my Wii experience.
I have a launch day NTSC-U Wii and most of my games i have are copies (i actually regret wasting the DVDRs on most of the games and the games that i actually do play, i actually ended up buying). I never updated my wiikey to 1.9g and wasn't really planning on it. I bought super mario galaxy the day it came out and played it extensively, but all i really play now with my friends is a couple of fun group games; wii sports, wii play, mario party, smarty pants (all of which i have originals of). In my opinion most Wii games are shelf-ware (granted i am probably a little bit outside the target age group of most of the wii games). But given the fact that i now can't even buy new games, i am not even going to bother anymore. I have an xbox360 and ps3 all of which i can download demos on, and actually buy the games i like. I am not going to buy a Wii game until i have played it because most games have not been properly translated for the wii remote/nunchuk. I have never even played any of the SSBB series, but i was planning on buying it, because i know its a fun game (from the craze the japanese version has made). But since the only way i can play it now is install (a yet to to be released) wiikey update to play a "nintendo unauthorized copy" or put a switch into my wiikey to play a retail original. I have a switch, maybe i'll install it, i've modded my friends d2c system so i know i can easily add the switch. But i will probably just enjoy playing wii sports and just buy games for my other systems since i know if i like them from the demos. Anyway, not that anyone asked me, but just find if frustrating that nintendo has decided to go this way with copy protection. Because obviously most of the other people reading this forum will either put in a switch, change chips, or upgrade chips to play a copied version of the game. And i won't even be able to buy new games because my system (something i own) is not the way nintendo says it should be. I love my Wii, but i am actually happy with wii sports, nothing like bowling at home with a bunch of friends before hitting the town. ;)

No one asked, but just thought i'd share my frustration, i am sure Nintendo is reading the forums.

but think about what nintendo has done, only way i can play new games is either further "hack" my console or steal games. Seems like the wrong way to go about preventing piracy. I am not under the impression that i didn't steal the games i only have copies of, but i also know that most of them I've played once or twice and won't play again, because i don't like them. I would be pissed if i found out for $40-50 that i don't like a game. I moved to the states from the netherlands, and i couldnt even play my retail gamecube games until i put in a wiikey.

I have a bunch of pal gamecube games, and i am not going to further update my wiikey because i am a little afraid of losing the ability to play those games.

As far as I understand it 'Nintendo didn't go this way', the wiikey is just bugged.

I can't play retail either, but you know what, its MY fault for getting the wiikey installed AGAINST nintendo's wishes/guidelines.

I don't honestly see how you can blame or whine at Nintendo for anything EXCEPT the demos thing, which I have to agree with, I would like to see plenty of demos for the wii :)

The whole region limitation that all the consoles impose is stupid. If you buy a game in europe you should be able to play it anywhere. I did my graduate work in netherlands and when i moved back to the states, i had a bunch of pal gamecube games and an unmodded gamecube. The gamecube never worked with my ntsc tv, but at least after the wiikey i could play those retail games again. We will never see lots of demos on the wii, because most games just aren't that playable (my opinion, but many share it).

Nintendo knew full well that the wiikey would have a problem with retail copies of SSBB. They probably have a bigger wiikey team than the wiikey team. Like i said, i am not mad at Nintendo, i just think they are going about it ass backwards. The D2C board set was enough to keep most people from trying to mod their systems. I am not going to do anything to my wii that may make my gamecube games unplayable (some of which i couldnt buy in this country to begin with, nor would i rebuy a game i already own). Anyway, sorry if it sounded like whining, i just think its stupid that they intentionally released a game that you have to pirate to play on a modded console.

Another example of why a wiikey is useful, the censored Manhunt 2 is terrible. (Why would you censor a game where you violently kill people, its obviously for adults). Yet the rating boards decide what is good for us adults.

for what is worth , i have an Infectus 2 , with wiiktus 1.5 in it, riped the game , burn with image burn, on memorex dl, tried all speeds, it stops at white screen, i was able to see the logo, and click on it, did the update, original disk works, i end up doing the layer break, and it works, i am a very happy camper.

The reason most (not all now) consoles are not region free I would wager my bets on the EU economy. Not only is NTSC/PAL the primary difference between allowing complete region free consoles (such as PS3 for PS3 titles (but not PS2 and PSX); but it's the market economy in general. As all EU gamers will know, games are horribly delayed and overpriced (i.e 50 British Pounds as opposed to US $50, nearly double the price). I would dare say that allowing all consoles to be region free, would plummet (if not noticeably dampen) the gaming market in the EU, because a majority (for those who are at least informed) would simply import their games.

I'm not from the EU, but given my experience with importing I would like to say those are the major reasons for holding 'region-free' consoles back.

I agree with what has been said so far to the extent that yes it is my own problem for installing a Wiikey, but in some sense it is Nintendo's issue (or as shown above, not soley their issue) with not enabling region-free titles/consoles.

To be completely honest (and this is only being honest with myself if no one believes me which is totally fine), my Wiikey has been used only to play import JP titles (only have Naruto actually). The last time I have actually used/played a back-up game was in the 'prime' days of PS2 which was over 4 years ago for me.

Ill post my situation just incase somebody else has this issue, i have a wiikey, i updated to 3.2U, the game loads i made the save file, then the super smash video plays where it shows all of the characters and i have no sound, once it gets to the end of the line of characters the white screen comes up saying theres a disc error, i immediately pop the disc out and right back in and hit A, and it takes me to the main screen to play, so idk if this is a problem with my media or burning. i used sony dvd+r dl at 2.4x but this seems to be a workaround for me, hope it helps anybody with a similar problem.

demos are nice, but renting is always an option. no reason for him to try and justify downloading.
he's whining about possibly breaking his wiikey with firmware updates now.
this is the risk we take with modding
can't blame nintendo for anything.
If they manage to stop it, good for them, they win.

But they will never be able to stop it, all their newest protection has done is made people with not updated chips/switchless chips unable to play retail copies. There already is a double layer ssbb iso that works on 3.2U/1.9g. So all nintendo has done is keep me from buying the game. Like you said, i will not update my wiikey because i don't want to risk losing the ability to play pal gamecube games. I will probably put in a switch when i get around to it, and buy the game. But their new protection hasnt stopped piracy it just made it difficult to play legit copies. Ass backwards.

the way i see it is this; nintendo wants people to remove their modchips in order to play brawl, but is unsuccessful because people can corrupt the firmware to render the mochip useless. also, it seems that nintendo didn't even think about people putting switches on the modchip.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

aguess: You're wrong. Nintendo doesn't give a crap whether or not you can PLAY the game. They just care if you BUY it. And this thread is more than enough info that even modders will BUY a good game. Heck, half the problem is that people can't play the game they BOUGHT. I've purchased all the games I actually enjoy playing for wii.

Personally, I read and follow the directions at the end of 99% of .nfo's from release groups: If you like this game, buy it! And so I do. Downloading is like Renting w/ a bonus honestly. The saying comes up again and again: how do you expect people to BUY your game/music/whatever if they won't even download it for free? I guess there are those who will play downloaded games only but I think this thread is more than enough evidence that modders are not all nasty/cheap pirates and they do buy legit games like everyone else. The modchip is more of a convenience.

On another note, I was one of the few who did the wiikey firmware corruption trick, but got stuck at a white screen after making a save file. There is a SPECTRUM of solutions to this problem, some people claim cleaning the lens solved it, I've heard of other deleting the save file and remaking it to help the problem, some people wait until after 75% to corrupt the firmware, other still haven't fixed it. I just hope that I will be able to play the game SOMEHOW and I thank everyone at afterdawn for being so helpful to everyone else. Long live AD!

I dont think that nintendo intended to make the origional game disks not work with the wiikey. If anything, not having the origional work on a modchip (and its only one chip btw. every other chip plays origional copies of the game perfectly) has lowered sales of the game. Alot of people won't be too happy spending $50 on a coaster when backup or bootleg copies of the game still work.
