Well, I guess we can all agree to disagree as to if Nascar can have as much sucess beyond the US boarders as F1. I'am after all admittedly bias towards Nascar. Every Sunday I'm glued to the TV. And maybe the F1 races I have watched, just havent been that good. I know that can happen in Nascar. I'll convince someone to watch a race and it will be the a race where one person dominates and there are zero cautions. So round and round they go. Luckly that does not happen very often. Then the person will wonder what I was talking about. Where's all the action?? I think F1 needs to come to Indy, it might open some eyes. Are they still talking about that? How about the people that say our drivers are not athletes? Or that racing is not a sport? Do you agree or disagree?

Friend, it is called "The Grand Prix of the United States", round 9 of the FIA World Championship.
Speedway, Indiana, USA.
I was at the first one, Sept.24, 2000 - got a TShirt, not going back, but it was pretty good though.
Distinctly inferior to Ile Notre-Dame (Montreal), a gorgeous National Park floating in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, which is used only once/year for the big race.
(Well I guess twice, now that CART Champ Cars run there in late summer.)
There is a spot we stand, where the cars go by @ 300kph, about 10 feet away while taking a big pull in top gear ;^)
Trust me, your TV speakers cannot hope to capture the glorious violence of that sound, and the resulting cacaphony of compression in the braking zone - the '1812 Overture' cannon-shot bass that blasts through your guts with every downshift.
To a true F1 fan, the cars are the stars (it doesn't really matter who wins).
The famous, historic racetracks of legend are the 2nd stars...
Hey, even the Minardi's are GLORIOUS in person; trust me :^)
Watching on TV means little, unless you have been to a race - then your subconscious mind fills in the fullness of the audio, and you smile fiendishly...
@hctr3
If you missed Imola (San Marino) last weekend, you missed a good one!
Actually, SPEEDvision did not broadcast that race - but it is being re-broadcast in the U.S. Friday April 29, at midnight (!) Eastern time (9PM Pacific).
Check it out and you will see why Michael Schumacher is still 'The Man'...

LOL, well I guess that shows just how on top of the F1 schedule I am. I thought I just read something (within the past year) like they were doing something diferent or something like that at Indy. Oh well. I live in Portland Oregon and we actualy have a pretty nice road course here. Turn one could be the most caution causing turns I have ever seen. Turn one is a 90 degree turn at the end of a half mile or so stragiht away. Cart still comes here and races. There is always a pileup on the first lap of the race going into that turn. It is not F1 but it's open wheel and fast none the less. We go every year. I agree, the sound of a race car is awesome. Both open wheel and Stock. Big difference between the two sounds though.

Hey how about some Honda fans going ballistic?
No, eh...
Poor Jenson B. et al,
BAR is gettin' screwed here or what!?
The whole thing is really strange, but Jacques V. came out smelling sweet - he's up to 4th place in that race, LoL ;^)
Hey baabaa, what's up with F1 these days? I've been watching forever, and it just seems to get weirder & weirder lately...

LOL, having the weekend off...........
Yes, BAR have been absolutely 'nailed'.
A lenghty quote.
Quote: FIA president Max Mosley unleashed another verbal assault on BAR during a press conference at the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday, accusing it of ?crude? and ?primitive? tactics in seeking to subvert the sport?s technical regulations.
The Brackley-based team was stripped of the 10 points it scored in the San Marino GP and banned from the next two races after the FIA Court of Appeal found it guilty of running an underweight car at Imola.
However, the court stopped short of convicting BAR of the more heinous charge brought by the FIA, that of deliberate cheating, stating that there was no conclusive evidence that it had acted in a fraudulent manner.
Instead it rebuked the team for ?a highly regrettable negligence and lack of transparency? in failing to ensure that its cars complied with the minimum weight regulations at all times.
Mosley made it clear he considered that a charitable verdict.
?Confronted with what appeared to be a deliberate infringement, BAR have pleaded stupidity and the judges has given them the benefit of the doubt,? he said.
?I suspect the judges felt there was some doubt and they were not willing to go all the way and say fraud.
?That would have been the end of the season for BAR-Honda. I think [the two-race ban] reflects the disapproval for negligence.?
Mosley reiterated his own view that BAR attempted to hoodwink the officials by using fuel as ballast so as to pass post-race scrutineering and expressed incredulity at such tactics.
?You have got to be crazy to do it,? he said. ?People don?t do that sort of thing in Formula 1 any more.
?It?s the kind of thing people do in low-grade club racing. It?s crude and primitive, it?s not sophisticated electronics.?
Mosley confirmed that there was nothing illegal about BAR?s fuel system per se, which he said was ?identical to [that of] other teams?.
The problem ? which Mosley regards as a conscious act of deception ? was its failure to drain the extra fuel from the collector tank for the purposes of scrutineering, thereby ensuring that the car weighed in above the 600kg minimum.
BAR insisted at the court hearing on Wednesday that its cars required the excess fuel in the collector tank simply in order to function properly, and consequently never weighed less than 600kg at any point during the race.
The team supplied reams of telemetry and fuel consumption data to support its case.
But Mosley says that a physical inspection of the cars after the race is the only reliable way to establish whether cars conform to the regulations.
?The only way we can be certain is to take the fuel out and weigh [the car],? he said.
The FIA president refuted paddock speculation that the governing body had been tipped off by former BAR employees with an axe to grind.
But he claimed he had been aware of rumours circulating during the winter that some teams might be circumventing the regulations in order to run underweight cars.
?Everybody who was really in the know in Formula 1 strongly suspected something was going on,? he said.
?I personally heard about it during the winter from someone who does not work in Formula 1 but works in top-level motorsport in America.?
I think the next team to break a rule could land themselves in jail the way things are going.
I would like to know, why the driver would be scrutinised in these situations.
It is clear that there indeed was a breach, the severity of it I think is VERY questionable, and Max Mosley I believe is just trying to show everyone who is boss.
As the Stewards (after the race) saw no reason to persue BAR and accepted the reasoning from BAR.
When I found out, I was discussing it with my mate, and you know the whole thing stinks of Ron Dennis from Maclaren.
We then had a look at the results......and what do you know, who would benefit quite nicely from a suspension/10 point loss from San Marino........Maclaren would........Alex Wurtz was 4th in the race and Kimi blew it..........................
I tell you and I make no secret of it, Ron Dennis is a bad loser, and if there are any slight chances he can 'ripple' the water and benefit Maclaren then he goes out of his way to do it, I have never come across such a poor loser in F1 as much as Ron Dennis, and therefore would not be surprised if he was the instigator behind this.
As said, the stewards investigated it and found no real breach and considered the matter closed.........someone rocked the boat again.........
Back to Spain.
Well Fernando has the crowd behind him this weekend, Barcelona did not used to be popular, however over the last 4 years, Fernando has turned things around, I think he still has the momentum from his excellent start to the season, and the fact Benetton are really progress with development and improvements can only lead to one thing and that is raw competetiveness.
Still, Schuey showed everyone that he is not sitting back and letting it go, he has a tough job ahead of him, but we know the 'prancing horse has fighting spirit', and I would not be surprised if we have another 'head to head' between Benetton and Ferrari (except this time we will see the good parts in the UK, instead of the ITV bollocks were they cut to adverts just before the end).
It is things like that, that puts SKY just a footstep closer to wrenching F1 away from clasps of our British TV.................
Good weekend hoped for, nice tight racing and rip roaring stuff expected.............
AND Montoya is back, even though he totalled his car on Friday..........can he put his 2 peneth in.............hope it's a good one............

Kimi!
He's gonna be fast (well he's always been) but he's HOT now - can they keep his wheels under him?
I like the guy, he's solid (no BS) and he tells it like it is...
HEY - can somebody explain how Montoya can spin, stop twice, and then make a third visit to his fuel rig, and still finish ahead of one-stop Rubens!?
That's fooked up... or what?
Maybe it's my imagination but hasn't Michael gone entire seasons without losing a tire?
Personally I've got Michelin Pilots on both my cars, but I bet The Schu is getting very upset with his Bridgestones.
Ahhh, Monte Carlo - I would love to attend but you need big $$$
They say Spa-Francorchamps is best for a visit, and affordable too :^)
Gotta get some sun before Montreal in June (we always burn to a crisp - it's tradition). SPF 200 required!
Canada gets more sun in June than Florida...
Somebody take that pansy bastard Brightman to a race - that'll shake him up, LoL ;^)

hey buddy, ANY of those hotels are going to be triple the normal price around racetime, and that is IF you can get a room. I tell you what to do, look for hotels in Anderson, Muncie, or Greenfield. 3 towns that are less than an hour from the track and 1/2 the price of staying in indianapolis during the race. especially Anderson, thats where i live. you could get a hotel room for around 40 bucks a night

Nice fellow like you, likes cats, likes F1, you're perfect!
Don't worry, future Mrs. Baabaa looking for you too...
Hey wouldn't it be okay to look like David Coulthard? The ladies, the ladies (and, he's wealthy too).
My chubb hurts just thinkin' about it... (ahem).
So who do you like in Montreal, lads?
I tell ya, Ferrari is working day & night (Bridgestone too) and we have not yet seen their best this season. Too little too late?
Do you think Renault is invincible?

LMAO........that'll be right, over here in the UK, so no real chance of me travelling there, however, looking at going to one this, afterall, being free and single means I should have some spare dinero knocking around to treat myself with..................
I heard a rumour that BAR are going to be the team to beat in Montreal........would be nice for them mix it up abit........
Kimi lost his head a little at the Nurburgring, did you see his wheel before the crash, man that must have been difficult to keep straight.......
Would be nice to see Ferrari start up, although they are making gradual improvements, but as you say, may just be a little too late.
Hopefully will be a good race, Montreal usually provides us with some good entertainment and slick racing.............
Alonso/Renault proved that it ain't over until you see the chequered flag.
Has he got enough to keep off Kimi, that is the question everyone is asking.............

What a complete fuck up.................
Geeze, I have never witnessed such a circus performance by everyone invloved.
I know the safety issue is the paramount problem, but wasn't that always the case since they introduced the 'no tyre' change rule.
They always new this type of situation was going to appear, and yet they do nothing............................
I understand the technical implications, and surely Michilen were aware of this situation well before the race (probably months)
Give em pitstops, give em all bridgestones, just do something positive to give us a race.
Sod the track mod, that changes everything, and suddenly brings all the Michilen runners back into the forefront and probably then disadvantages other drivers.......................
IMO, there really is no compromise, and Michilen should be held TOTALLY accountable, for which they should receive a VERY stiff penalty, because it looks like it may be curtains for the US Grand Prix............................
Afterall Bridgestone don't have a problem.......why not?
Anyways, race is gonna kick off in a couple of mins so, who knows what is gonna happen.
One thing, Darthnip I think will be able to give us some 'trackside' comments upon his return............

Not really funny - it's pretty sad.
Michelin has fooked up BIGtime.
That banked corner has been there since 1903... They cannot produce a tire that will steer a 1200-pound car around it safely?
Kinda harsh for the ticket-buying spectators, though.
Yeesh. There are gonna be lawsuits...

I know I fully support Ferrari and Schuey, but what a joke.......
At least Ferrari managed to get some points from it, afterall it was an official 'race'.
I heard several things, and 2 main things I keep hearing is:
Michelin had technical issues with the tyres (bad design etc)
or
Michelin brought the incorrect tyres
Don't know which comment is true.......................
I feel sorry for all those that paid, to see their fav teams/drivers to have a cracking race, and they got stiffed.
I wonder, were the majority of the spectators aware of this situation occuring on the day?
My gripe aswell, is why on earth did the teams go out to the grid, do the formation lap and then go into the pits..........thats like saying rubbing salt into the wounds..................
I know their hands were tied Michelin, and I can see some real reprisals coming out all of this...................
Still, they had plenty of time to compromise and resolve it, hell why didn't bernie ecclestone post here for an answer..........
A dark day for F1 and also dark for Indy, I hope it can be rectified, but I do fear that'll be the last time F1 will visit the states...........
Formula 1 lost a foothold today, and pretty much proved that this sport is now becoming a business enterprise rather than the sport we have all come to love.............................

my only comment is "what a complete crock of shit!"
yes they should have brought a better tire, but given the new rules about tire changes, provisions should have been made. Either give them the damn chicayne the wanted, or let them change the freakin tires! I am so pissed off because it took years for F1 to return to america, now we'll probably not get it back! I wish they would keep the competition on the track instead of with the damned ego's of the management.

LoL - exactly, Baabaa :^)
I would have told him to allow all the teams (Bridgestone too) to change tires, and impose a penalty of 10 seconds onto each team that did.
This 10 seconds to be added to their race time would be reflected also in their grid-position to start the race (qual. time +10sec).
That would have made everyone happy, but made all the teams sufficiently displeased with Michelin to reinforce to them the fact that they fooked up.
Note: I am reading news reports everywhere that the FIA 'would not allow' the new tires flown in from France - this is not true.
The FIA said they are free to change tires for any good reason, but there would be a penalty to discourage this (unspecified).
They should have used new Michelins - the chicane thing was a bad idea IMO

they feel like they let the US down with this "display"
im not really sure what you guys in the US feel about F1, but in the UK i would say its taking a nose dive
is it a big sport over there? is there a large following?

it was developing into a bigger sport over here, nowhere near the following that shows in other parts of the world though. the sad thing is today farce probably just cost F1 a whole bunch of fans and future fans in this country. The die hard fans like myself dont really care, but the crowds over here can be a bit picky so you never know what will happen.

Everyone is having a go at Michelin, I do not think they are to blame. Tyre technology is, like all of F1, very demanding. Kimi found that out last week. I am not in favour of one set of tyres. Safety & reliability is a major issue.
The arguement that Bridgestone can do it, why can't they?, is irrelevant. That is playground talk & is far too simplistic.
The fine line these guys take is truly amazing. The new surface that was at Indy was too abrasive for the tyres that Michelin took. This was, I think, unforseen. The amount of wear, that is.
Bridgestone had the edge. That is racing.
I do not like that circuit. It is designed for different cars. F1 cars do not like in-field tracks. They need to be at a track like Spa, or the OLD Hockenheim. I do not like the "pandering" to audiences that this type of track does.
It is NOT Nascar or circuit racing. It is Formula one. It is the absolute pinnacle of motor vehicle racing/technology, reliant on brains, not brawn!
I would not run F1 at Indianapolis, it just does not lend itself to F1. Jean Todt is the spoilsport in my eye. I can see his side of the arguement. But at the end of the day people are there to race. It just shows how desperate it can get. It was an atypical modern solution, just think of the short term & to hell with the consequences.
He may have got the points, but at what cost? It was a major PR disaster for the whole sport. But what the hell, Ferrari got their points!
For the good of the sport there should have been a chicane from the start of practice. It would not have been the best solution, but at least there would have been a race.
I hope it is the last time they have the GP there. There must be a half decent track in the states somewhere?
The FIA all need rounding up & shooting. This was very easy to solve. But not half an hour before the race!
Pulsar
Anyone catch the TT this year? That race sorts the men from the boys! Would love to see Rossi do a couple of laps!!
