The reading speed of softmodded Wiis is limited to 3x while hardmodded Wiis read at 6x.

He means the speed your wii is reading the disc at, not the speed you burnt the disc at.

So say for the Wiikey 2, you can use the config disc 1.2 and set the read speed of the disc to 6x, as opposed to 3x.

Maybe you should find out what chip you have?

I want to thank you guys for providing me with the information to back up my wii disc.I found a DVD-R drive LG-8164b on amozon.com they are used but it work great.I did everything that was outlined to backup my games but i had a problem when i clicked on rawdump.exe file.I got all error messages when rawdump page comes up,file maybe harmful and windows can't find program. What i did was just right click on the rawdump.2.0 folder and copy and paste it on the desktop then i open the folder and there was three files, rawdump, rdump.dll and read me.I clicked on rawdump and everything just fell right into place after that,no error message again.Hope this might help someone. Thanks again guys.

1. Make sure that you have installed the correct version of .net framework. (2.0 is minimum but 3.0 works best for me.)

2. Run in safe mode if your system is too "busy".

If you already backed a game from Original disc, and want to make another copy of it, you just use imgburn to create ISO image of the copy disc.
Then burn ISO image with imgburn.

Put your copy of the backup in your disc drive
Open Imgburn
Click on Create image file from disc

That will create an ISO image

Then open imgburn and click on write to disc.

Wow, pretty comprehensive guide! Walks you through even the model numbers, lol.

What do you all think? I offer a few tips at my website on ways to do this, I pretty much have been in the Game Burning industry since SEGA CD!!!

haha, who even remembers that? Anyways, Copy Wii Games edited by ddp is the name of it and it is very, very informative. Nothing to buy, free site.

There are some recommendations for software, but all the information is free and completely up to date.

**This thread was a made over a year ago I think.** Things have changed, some.

HL-DT-ST ram.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD-RAM, I noticed that you said you needed yadda yadda-ROM and not -RAM, what's the diff btween the two? How can I make a ii back up with a -RAM?

You need to use only DVD-ROM, read-only-memory, as opposed to ram.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD-RAM, random-access-memory

The data on a DVD RAM can be rewritten numerous times over the period of its life
A DVD ROM is designed to be read only. This means that once the data has been encoded, the disc is in a fixed state and cannot be changed. This makes it highly suitable for storing data which would not need to be overwritten or changed

DVD-RAM uses a type of technology known as phase change on the physical disc to store the data. The disc has a special layer of material made from a mixture of metals which is highly responsive to heat. When the laser makes contact with it, one temperature will cause the alloy to be crystalline, while a higher temperature will turn it amorphous. Thus, it is possible to record binary data onto the disc for playback, and to erase the data and write over it later.
Hope that explains it for you.

so, I can re-use a dvd-r disc after I've burned something to it. let's say I dl some tv shows or movies, burn 'em to a disc. Done watching, never gonna watch again, instead of using a new disc I can re-use the one I just used? Really?
In oder to make a backup wii disc I'd have to have a ram.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">dvd-ram with a dual layer disc, right? I just wanna make sure I understand all this. Thanks.

For Wii backups you need to use DVD-R DVD-ROM discs to burn the ISO image too.
YOu need to have one of those specific drives mentioned in the first post to backup Wii games
Or a few pages back or so are methods described to backup Wii games using wifi to your pc.

You only need DL discs for two games, SSBB and Metroid I believe.

As for rewritable media , you would need a ram.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD-RAM drive or that has DVD-RAM support
DVD-RAM is considered a highly reliable format, as the discs have built-in error control and a defect management system. Therefore, DVD-RAM is perceived to be better than the other DVD technologies for traditional computer usage tasks such as general data storage, backup and archival, though the 'Mount Rainer' standard for DVD+/-RW (and CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R) somewhat lessens the DVD-RAM format's perceived advantage.

It is all explained in this wiki

A guide here explaining what media to use for Wii backups - link

Forget about DVD+RW and DVD-RAM for making Wii-Backups.
