jpx, i had some trouble similar to this. i ended up using my emmprom to lock my bro's new harddrive. unfortunately i didnt notice that until it was too late(long story). but at any rate evox is the best to start out with until u get a good grasp on everything. this is wut u need to do after evox is installed. if u have it as ur boot dash then go to settings and select backup. afterwards create a FTP connection from ur computer to ur xbox. go to the C drive of ur xbox and there should b a folder called backup. that's the emmprom u wanna get. make a new xboxhd cd and try that.
hope that works
GOODLUCK

Well, I unmodded my xbox, and then remodded it. I took the eeprom that that generated, and made a new xboxhdm disc. Worked like a charm!!
Only problem is that now when I try to play a game from my new hd, it seems to lock up....
Any ideas?

hmm, never had any of my games lock up. could b this(im not sure how extensive ur knowledge is of the xbox so forgive me if i underestimate u), u didnt patch the games before u put them on ur harddrive or u dont have a signature program for ur xbox (ie.pheonix bios loader) . that's bout the only thing i could think of. if u need to patch them use a xbox app called dvd2xbox(it can b found in the usual place). this apps copies the game to ur hd after patching it. but if u would like to move up a lil bit u could just use unleashx dash. jus incase u dont know, jus rename the unleashx.xbe to evoxdash.xbe and replace the evoxdash.xbe with that. hope this helps finsh up the soft modding.
GOODLUCK

I HAVE FINALLY DONE IT...AND DOES IT FEEL GOOOOOOD!!!
Alright here is what i did and if anyone need more details please let me know.
1. I softmodded by xbox using the tut on this site (this was the easiest thing to do)
2. Using FTP i copied the C: and E: folders to my PC hard drive (don't worry about the whole "this softmod uses virtual C:" etc. just copy the C: and E: you see). I also copied my eeprom that i found in the UDATA folder.
3. Now here is what i changed in my process. Originally i just followed the tut on page one of this thread and everything would work fine until i would try to lock the hard drive. I don't know what was wrong but i am guessing it was the eeprom file...but don't worry about this if you made ur xboxhdm cd using an eeprom file.
4. I found an another tut on the web that i used to LOCK MY HARD DRIVE and here it is:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=250525
But i did use the original tut on afterdawn.com's site up until the "lockhd -a"...b/c that wasn't working for me. SO i tried the tut above to manually enter the password and it worked. ASK me if any of you have questions and i'll try to help to the best of my ability.
error55o: All of this worked on my second computer so i didn't need to look for other computers...thank god & thanks for ur help.

Everything works like a charm now. I always use DVD2XBOX to copy my games. So I knew it wasn't a patching issue. Actually, I figured out it was the IGR of EvolutionX that was causing the lockups. I use UnleashX as my dash anyway, so I got rid of EvolutioX altogether. Everything works great now.
Thanks to all in this thread. A wealth of knowledge.

Chief424: Like footbal95 said, I find unleashX to be a little more user friendly. Anyways, first try what i am about to tell you and if that don't work then i would redo the softmod and choose UnleashX and then try again. Here goes: I assume you have already downloaded dvd2xbox, and that you are able to FTP into your xbox using something like FlashFXP or something similar. Next, go to you FTP program and into your xbox's F: drive. If you don't already have one, creat a folder called "apps" and in that folder create a folder called "dvd2xbox". Now go to your dvd2xbox folder that you downloaded and open it until you can see a file called "default.xbe", there should be other folders and files along with this file. Now drag and drop everything in you dvd2xbox downloaded folder in to your F:\apps\dvd2xbox...restart your xbox and now you should see dvd2xbox under your applications...good luck.

Okay, so I followed the guide to the letter I only have a few questions that may or may not be answered in time to me getting this reply, but I figured it was worth a shot anyways. Here goes.
First off, when it got to the make iso part and it said to burn it to cd I had to burn mine to dvd seeing as how the iso came out at 2gigs. I dont assume thats to much of a problem but wanted to make sure that it wasnt to big of a deal.
Second, since to much wasnt detailed on the XboxHDMaker part I went thru it with what I think was the right course. My only question is where it says:
"You now have the option to rebuild the C- and optionally the E-drive. Recommended as the partitions are empty!
Searching for files... [OK]
Continue copying files from /xboxhdm/C [yes/no] : "selected yes"
Building C-drive...
Building E-Drive...
Continue copying files from xboxhdm/C [yes/no] : "selected yes""
Okay, now at that as you can see I selected yes. Was that the correct option to choose? Mainly asking cause the curser has been flashing for maybe 10 - 15 minutes or so and the screen hasnt made any change. Just wondering if I screwed myself out of a few hours of work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Glad to see that the tutorial is alive and well. I sofmod'd my xbox over a year ago and recently the hard drive crapped out. Thank God I held on to the backup I made. Followed the tutorial to the letter and hit the "drive frozen" snag. Powering the drive up after booting to the linux disk did the trick!! Thanx guys!
By the way, the first drive I tried to use was a Samsung SP041N (40GB). I found the drive listed in the database as lockable but when trying to lock it reported that it did not follow the ATA security spec. Anyone else try this drive?
Thanks to everyone again for the excellent thread on xbox hard drive replacement.

Hey,
I found a tutorial for putting XBMC on my xbox, i used krayzie's softmod installer, and then followed the tutorial to put XBMC on my original xbox hard drive, i like using xbmc it installed fine, but i was trying to stream video off my computer to my xbox using a wifi adapter on both ends and my connection was way too slow, and i have an extra 160gb hd, and im trying to put that in, so i can use xbmc and just save all the movies and music to the bigger, hd. using this tutorial, i downloaded xboxhdm, and after installing xbox media center i couldn't get back to my evox dash, so i used splinter cell and did the "run linux" thing, and uninstalled the softmod, disabling media center, and then just re installed it and it took me to the evox dash, but when i go into the FTP thing, i cant find my eepromi looked in e there is no "backup_linux" folder and i looked all throughout udata
someone please help

Hi, i have a softmodded xbox with unleashx installed. I am upgrading the hard drive to a 80 gig. I would like to know if I have to softmod it still after swapping the hard drive and following the instructions given here? Reason i'm asking is because after following instructions, i get only the ms dashboard and no backup games work anymore. Please, any help would be great. Thanks!

dynasty68: I just did the softmod and installed a 160 GB HD on about 2 weeks ago and i remember that I did have to do the softmod again...and you'll probably just have to transffer the backed up games to the new HD using FTP.

Quick question. And sorry if this has been answered before. When attempting to upgrade the hd, the system will not boot the cd. I have checked all the settings and followed the instructions perfectly and all I get is a gray screen when booting. I was wondering, is there anyway to boot this hd using my laptop? It is a 200gb Seagate. If not, is there something that may be going wrong? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was under the impression that the hd has to be locked after everything else was done. And I'm using the xboxhdm bootdisk that is suggested in this tutorial.
