Greetings All...quick question, I have been trying to convert some old Seinfeld episodes (40-50 meg AVI files) with psp video 9 at different settings and no matter what setting I use the end result is a larger file....example: with 320x240/29.97 fps/384/64 kbps, a 50meg file with about 30min of video ballooned to 120meg psp file.
Any thoughts?

You can't put the movies onto a disc until Sony releases a UMD burner and media. The discs are a different size than mini-DVDs.

If you don't mind using payware, slysoft's AnyDVD with nero's recode2 makes psp videos from dvds very nicely. recode2 let's you scale the bitrate to control filesize, has a builtin PSP encoding profile, does 2-pass encoding, even makes the thumbnail file.

No one has mention the best DVD backup source on the net yet, so I thought I would throw it out there.
http://www.doom9.org has been around for years now and has FAR better guides than anything posted here. It moves way beyond anything you would need to know for the PSP for those who are interested. Everything I know about encoding video comes from this site.

Someone had brought up an interesting idea: can you play movies off an external hard drive rather than a memory stick?

yes, so it seems, on www.psp411.com there is a review of a hardisk like an ipod that can be attached to a psp.

very cool though one of the people on the site mentioned you'd have to be in usb mode the entire time(stupid as it sounds I didn't even consider that) and streaming wouldn't be possible evidently...

Can anyone give any recommendations as to what free converting programs are out there to convert .rm to psp? I tried PSP Movie Creator (which was absolutely awesome), however, it only converts the first 5 minutes of video. I do not want to pay for it (I guess I'm cheap), but I want a good one. Or, what is the best free way to at least convert from .rm to .AVI? Thanks!

Hey guys, I tried the following and was very successful.
1) DVD9 to a DVDR using SHRINK but don't burn it. Use the files that Shrink created now, about 4 GB down from 9 GB, with Nero Recode.
It has a setting for PSP and you can pick size....I have backed up feature length films into as little as 171MB but find 220MB to be better.
You recode it and rename the 00001 part in the MV file and slide on your PSP via USB....very easy.
Good Luck
