NOTE: Always use files from your Wii's region.

1) Your Wii should be at 3.1
2) You have installed 1.9g successfully
3) Now run SMG (from correct region) and let it update past that Warning. It will be OK. (The SMG update sometimes stops for a while at 30%. Do not panic, it's normal... Wait until done.)

Let me know.

hi
first of all, awesome guide!
secondly, i recently bought a pre-modded wii from a shop. ive got a question and i wud really really appreciate it if someone could help me out.

1)my wii has a 2.0 J firmware. I want to update it. should i do it before or after i update my wiikey? also, will my wii be updated correctly if i use the iso of wii fit or do i need the original dvd?

2) i am not a 100% sure that the modchip in my wii is a wiikey. if the modchip isnt a wiikey and i try running the wiikey update, my wii wont get damaged will it?

thank you so much.

@auleep

1) Your Wii will not get damaged by running the Wiikey update. If you try to run the update and you get an error then possibly you do not have a Wiikey.

2) Either way, it should work :

3.1 -> 1.9g -> SMG or 1.9g -> 3.1 -> SMG

3) You can use a backup of WiiFit to update. If you do it that way, then update first your Wiikey to 1.9g and then run WiiFit.

I just cant seem to get this to work I burned a copy of SMG put it in the wii it did the update to 3.0u then i updated my wiikey i heard homer say something then i put in my 1.3 config and changed the region override then i put in SMG to play it and it shows up on the channel but as soon as i start it i get the dre so i try my gcos backup of resident evil one and it works fine so i burn another copy of SMG same problem so i decided to burn Umbrella Chronicles pal and it worked flawlessly so i tried to burn another copy of SMG and i got the same problem im using Memorex DVD+R and they seem to work for all my other backups So should i try to burn this SMG on another type of media or is it the rip or is my wiikey not working properly

hi, i gave a backup copy of smg to my brother for christmas. If he tries the game without the 1.9g update disc, will the game still run the firmware update or will the disc just be not work? or does the disc have to be the original to run the update. or should he simply run the 1.9g update then try the smg backup?

After all the updates are performed, 1.9g and SMG do you still need to use wiibrickblocker on the future backups of other games?

@nelis2288:

Well, in your case we know that the Wiikey is working fine, since it's running other backups. The issue could very well be a bad rip (image). Also, you could try updating your Wii to 3.1 and then (possibly) re-run the 1.9g (although there should be no need to do that.)

@shinners:
Does it have a Wiikey? If he has a Wiikey, he has to run 1.9g before SMG.

@dthangl18

You would use Wiibrickblocker on images from regions other than your Wii's. However, your Wii could still be bricked and some games might end up not running.

i just tried running the update on my wii but it gave the 'test failed, check your connections and try again' message. so im suspecting that my wii has a modchip other than the wiikey. ive already searched and come across a couple of guides which tell me how to open up my wii. however, i just want to see what modchip i have. so my question is, where is the modchip in the wii located? i don't want to have to disassemble the wii more than necessary. thanks.

There isn't much space inside the Wii. Therefore all mod chips are located more or less in the same area. You should be able to see any mod chip once you remove the white plastic shell.

Wii-FIT from Japan semi-bricked my Wii-US with wiikey. The settings menu doesn't work and there are also double channels on weather and news. I can still play all other backup games.

wiikey was installed 5 months ago, and it has not been updated with 1.9g.

1. I wonder if I should still go ahead and update with 1.9g now that the Wii is semi-bricked.

2. then to run SMG-US and see if SMG update will occur and override the Wii-FIT version to unbrick Wii.

BTW, Wii-FIT is awesome once we figured out the Japanese menu.

Hi,

I?m new at this and recently I have my Wii modded in Chinatown @ NYC. I have a US Wii system and been playing back-up/download games like Mario Charged, Bust-A-Move and other Japanese games. I just burned/download Super Mario Galaxy (US). The startup screen is fine but when I click start it said something like ?error #001 unauthorized device detected.?. It also did some sort of update by itself?. After that, I tried other backup games and ?real? games and they worked fine.

From this thread I read you need to upgrade the WiiKey to 1.9G. But you need to update it to 1.9G before running SMG?. Is that true?

All I know I have a WiiKey installed, not sure what firmware I have for the WiiKey and my Wii (how can you check that?). Please let me know step by step since I never update my WiiKey and don?t know how to burn a startup-disc. Also, I do not have a GC controller so I?m not sure how this will work since ppl mention about using GCOS instead. Please advise. Thanks.

1) From the initial post, download the padded image of update 1.9g (Correct Region!)
2) Burn it at 4x on a DVD-R
3) Run the update ... you can use the RESET button on the Wii, instead of the A button on a GC controller
4) The update will run Twice (first a TEST, then the REAL thing) ... at the end you should hear Homer's voice.

That's it!

PS: You can check the Wii's firmware versions in the Wii's options screens.

1) Let's start with the partial brick situation (BTW - most likely caused by mixing-up regions):

WiiFit (JAP) seems to be able to unbrick Japanes Wiis.
Any chance you could rent/borrow/purchase the game and run it to unbrick your Wii?

2) The Wiikey has a fail-safe feature and the RECOVER 1.9B disc should be able to reset your chip:

Re-burn the 1.9b Recover disc using the padded file I have linked to in the initial post of this thread. Use good media, burn at 4x, and let it run 4-5 minutes
I've tried everything you've suggested. Well I don't know anyonw who has wiifit JAP so thats another story. However the recovery disk didn't work. You have said that when you put in the recovery disk no symbol or picture should come on the screen, but with mine the GCOS pops up. However even if I let it run free or activate it does not do anything. Is there a physical way I can reset it, like removing the internal battery or something. Thanks

Issues and fix to be added or canged :

"Q: On the initial test once it reaches 100% it says error test failed! check your connections and try again.
1)Poor connection between WiiKey and board, Test connections (multimeter), re solder possibly using long wire method.
2)You may have a clone WiiKey or Something else, Worth having a look inside your Wii if you havn't already. "

Nothing to do with connexions, I've got this problems from a file and reburned it. Worked without any problems.

Q: The Update Freezes after the Test
A: Get another file and urn it again.

Important note:
Me and my brother have the same model of Wii (mine was bought the 19 of november 2006, his a month after) We just recieved a Wiikey, both bought at the same place at the same time and seems to be genuine, but they are both identical.

Chip installed and connections tested myself befor actually trying it. So 2 identical Wii

First we both got the same error test failed! check your connections and try again.
I've found another file (from a different source) and burned it gain using clone cd. It worked on my brother console but it was freezing on mine just after the test succesful: press any key.

No matter what I tried, the 1.9b and 1.9g from this source was not working on my wii, but it was on my brothers. I'v got a 3rd file from another source and updated successfully.

So here, take in note that if you run on problems, try finding other files and reburn them, it seems every wii needs it's special treatment.

Thank you SO SO for your help. I got SMG to work now. Thanks!!!!

Just one more concern, I updated with 1.9g without doing anything for config 1.2 and config 1.3 and 1.9b. Is that ok? or?

BTW, what does config 1.2 and config 1.3 and 1.9b do? I think 1.9b is a recovery disc for WiiKey incase something goes wrong, but I never used config 1.2 and config 1.3. Please let me know and thanks for your help again.

Step by Step update: I suggst finding the updater that is not with the utility disc 1.3 (never made it to work, no matter what the source is) Just go with the update disc iso and burn it. You do not need to go with verion 1.9b before. Straight to 1.9g works.

The Wii will detect the disc as a gamecube disc. You will need a gamecube controller as any Wii controller are disabled as soon as the pdater starts. I think pressing reset should work when prompted to press A, but I screwed up my reset button so I can't confirm.

Run it and you'll have a nice little ass on your screen telling you what to do. It'll run some checks then ask you to press A (on the Gamecube controller) to continue and you will have a % rising.

It is now testing to see if he would be able to uptade the wiikey.

Then it will do the same thing over, asking you to press A again, now it will be updating the chip and a RED WARNING will appear.

Once done press a button to here homer and the system will reboot.

If not working, find another source for the file (google it) and reburn it using ImgBurn or clone cd (if one don't work, you might want to try the other)

Firstly a big big TQ to Rafadawn for starting this and patience with all the queries.
I got my Wii(J) Wiikey updated to 1.9g and SMG is working now. Prior to the 1.9g update, my Wii was at firmware 3.1J. I thought I would hv needed the GCOS version of Wiikey update so I burned all the DVDs using WiiUI and made GCOS filechopped update 1.9g, GCOS config 1.3 but without a GC controller, I couldn't activate the update. Pressing reset button doesn't work. It just resets back to the health warning screen. Then I tried burning just the filechopped updates and config. However, they still bear the Gamecube Image in the disc channel. The config 1.3 disc didn't work. Booting it just brings up the "turn the Wii OFF" black screen. BUT the Update 1.9g disc does work. Booting it brings up the "Ass" image and instructions to test and update. Following a cold reboot of the Wii, SMG worked. (Fantastic game) WiiPlay backup still worked but I hvn't tried others.
Thx to all that have contributed their advice here.

Hi. Can i use a dvd-rw for the 1.9g wiikey update?

Also, whats the use of the config 1.3 file? My current ver of wii is 3.1J after updating it with my SMG. I'm only left with the wiikey update to 1.9 to be able to play SMG right?

You mean you are burning the .iso directly on the disc?

What program are you using.

I suggest clonecd since it's easy to use. There's a 21day full trial.
Anyway, you have to burn using the option to burn an image (or open image) before burning it.

With what i understand you are copying the iso file on the cd wich is not the thing to do.
