Yes... I think that +r does work with version 4. It's versions 1-3 that has problems reading +r. I'm not 100% possitive but I'm pretty sure that it does work.

Hey, first post here I have an old American Playstation 2, a SCPH-30001. All I want to be able to do is play a few Japanese PS2 games (Wangan Midnight, Touge Max 3 and Initial D). From much of the advertising on the internet I have been led to believe the flip top mod paired with swap magic discs WILL allow me to do this. Earlier in this thread I have read I WOULD NOT be able to play Japanese original games on an American Playstation 2. What is the truth???

Yes mervin, you can play original jap games on your ps2 using Magic Swaps. I have exactly the same model as you and use Magic Swaps to play original japanese WE6FE :)

Jumbo, thanks for replying, only thing is it seems 5 days ago (according to your posts)you didn't even have a flip top. I guess you got one and have had good results with Jap imports? Which games did you try? Also, what does WE6FE mean?

Ye, I'm actually still waiting for my FlipTop... I've been using my Magic Swaps with the Slide Card - which is the same stuff as FlipTop - and my imports play fine.
Slide Card, FlipTop - don't matter, it's all in the Magic Swap Discs.
GT3 works fine, so does WE6FE [Winning Eleven Six Final Evolution] = soccer game.
Once Magic Swap 3.0 / Zonelander is out we'll be able to play ALL import games - can't wait for this shlt :) :)

StrikerZ, if you currently have a DVD Burner that only burns to +r/rw then go out and buy a three pack of DVD+R's for about fifteen bucks and test to see if it works. Just make sure you get a good brand like FujiFilm, Memorex, Ritek, or Verbatim. If you don't have a burner and are looking into one just get a DVD-R/RW to be on the safe side. I have heard from some sources that it does work and others that it doesn't. If you have a DVD+RW burner go ahead and try it out for yourself and let us know what happens. Goodluck!

I have a sony dvd burner that is +/- compatible. I have burned off over 50 games on dvd+r media. All of them work fine in my ps2, as well as dvd movies. Mostly I have used TDK dvd+r, with a few on fuji and verbatim...all work.

but what version ps2 do you have? StrikerZ wants to know if dvd+r will work on his version 4. I myself use dvd+r media but I have a version 5. I know versions 1-3 won't read dvd+r. We are trying to figure out if it will work on Version 4.

You are probably right about it being a version 4 but some version 5's are scph-30001. One full proof way of telling that your ps2 is a version 4 is by looking at the back of your ps2 and taking off the plastic thing that says expansion bay. If the expansion bay plastic thing has metal on the back of it it's a version 4. If it just has plastic on the back of it it's a version 5. Go ahead and do that just to be on the safe side.

There are many go places to buy the fliptop from. The site http://www.saveware.com/p628.htm
is a good place and has good prices. Also, the site http://www.modchipkits.com/ is very good, the only thing is sometimes it takes a while to ship the products. The only thing you need to know is that you need the swap magic discs in conjunction with the fliptop and you also should know if you have a ps2 version 1-3 or version 4-8.

My expansion bay cover does have metal on the inside. I guess this means it is ver.4 without a doubt. It will read dvd+r, but it won't read any kind of RW media. I've heard that only ver.5 & up can read RW, so I guess this is accurate.

Well that's definately good news. StrikerZ, you should be able to play your DVD+R backups without any problems. Also my version 5 doesn't read dvd+rw backups either. I think only some version 7's can read them.
