The Nero Burning ROM in Nero8 doesn't work with Shrink.

HMMM...obviously sir you did not take the time to read the previous posts:~)
1. You burn manually using Nero after DVD Shrink finished compiling your DVD
2. You update your backup method and instead of DVD Shrink use Nero Recode, which probably would be faster than DVD Shrink anyway. Time to say goodby to DVD Shrink a beloved companion for all this time...And is the way that makes more sense, if you have a full Nero 8 package.

I tried to backup a copy of ratatouille, and shrink didn't like it. I downloaded DVD Fab Platinum (Free) and it copied the video TS file to my external drive video folder, (as I requested it to do). Then I downloaded Final Burner (Free) from Protected Soft, and burnt it to DVD. No hassles, works fine. I used to use shrink and DVD Decrypter all the time, but no use these days.
Also, I tried this backup with mac the ripper and toast, no good, too much crap and blocking files.
Nero's a nice package, but at $199.00 Australian, you need to be using every utility.

You meant DVDFab HD Decrypter- free, right:~)?!
DVDFab Platinum is not free.
I don't know how much Australian $$ are comparing to US $$, but nero 8 can be found here for $60-$70.

So does Nero 8 Ultra Edition come with Nero Recode? And, I thought that Nero was against piracy. From what I heard, they can legally sell DVD Burning Software and also DVD Decrypting software, just not together.

The Ultra package contains Recode. Nero Recode is not a decrypting software. Nero does not have any decrypting software.
nero recode is an "improved" version of the transcoding engine of DVD Shrink. Nero Recode will remake/shrink/author/transcode/burn unprotected DVDs. So basically you use it after you ript the DVD your hard drive.

The key to backing up your factory DVDs is removing the decryption and copy protection and getting compliant files. Programs such as DVDFab HD Decrypter (free), DVDFab Platinum (retail), and AnyDVD (retail) are supported programs that do the decryption and remove copy protection. RipIt4Me (free) is another good one, but slightly obsolete (there's a few releases it can't do since it lost support).
Occasionally the programs leave the output noncompliant. When that happens FixVTS comes in handy for repairing the file structure to make it compliant. A good compliance test is the Quick Analysis in DVD Shrink or Recode. With a good cleaned source, you can just about choose your transcoding and burning software from a long list. I was mostly talking about files ripped to the HDD. AnyDVD can usually remove encryption and copy protection on the fly. When there are issues, it works best with CloneDVD 2. Occasionally there is new copy protection the program isn't updated for and in those instances it's use other software or wait for the update.
Most copy software sold today comes without decryption software. That way it can work with any files without copy protection, which just happens to cover those cleaned files from factory DVDs, but also homemade movies. The transcoding and burning software is legal because it has legal applications and in itself breaks no laws. It's the decryption software that is illegal. To copy most videos to DL all a person needs is AnyDVD and a burner program. Of course the files can be processed to the HDD with other decryption software and burned from there. Point being, copying to DL is a simple process. Transcoding or encoding (shrinking to DVD5) is just an intermediate step in the process if the user wants a DVD5 copy. Editing is just fine tuning to get rid of unwanted material, either to lower the compression or simply removing unwanted video and audio tracks. Beginners read too much into the process. It's actually simple once the user finds the right combination of software to do what they want. Remove copy protection (sometimes repairing for compliance), editing is optional, transcode or encode (shrinking to DVD5 when desired), and burn is all there is to doing a copy. As I mentioned, it's all in using the right software and using it correctly.

I forgot to mention, there's absolutely no need to buy Nero for backing up DVDs. DVD Shrink is free and Recode is simply an updated clone. Depending on the settings, it isn't that much faster. Both have quality settings for doing videos with higher compression levels that cause them to take longer. Don't use those settings and both programs are faster. If you time a transcode with both using the same files with similar settings you'll find no appreciable time difference. Note I said similar settings.
DVDFab HD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and ImgBurn are all free and usually all that's needed for a good backup. Both DVDFab HD and ImgBurn are supported. For the occasional noncompliant files there is FixVTS (also free). Beginners should learn with those and then buy the retail programs if they don't already have some of them on hand.

In that case I'd say it's just a matter of choice. Recode isn't an exact clone of Shrink and I can see advantages to both. As for Nero 8, maybe someone will rewrite the Shrink exe to call on the Burning ROM correctly. It was done for ImgBurn support. Until then, ImgBurn is probably the best option for Shrink. It's a small app (in size), so doesn't take much space (I like it better than Nero for recording DL). If a person is running into Vista issues, then Recode is probably the solution, since Nero was updated for Vista. I've heard different stories on Shrink issues with Vista. Some say it works and others say that can't get it to.

Yes, I (he/it) did buy Nero 8 Ultra Edition already. The reason is because I have only ever used DVD shrink to back-up DVDs and I was told that it requires Nero to burn to a DVD +R/W.
I am painfully inexperienced when it comes to working with DVD decrypters/decoders/burners, as well as figuring out which applications I should use, but I guess I have to learn somewhere. I'm glad I found this website, it is very helpful. :)

If Shrink was the only reason you needed Nero, somebody definitely steered you wrong, especially since Nero 8 isn't supported. I believe VSO's CopyToDVD was updated for Vista and it's still a supported Shrink burner app. Since Nero 8 Ultra has Nerovision and the other features like Recode, it wasn't a waste.

I'm hoping someone can help me with my Nero/DVD Shrink problem.
I recently got a new Vista computer, so installed DVD Shrink and Nero 8. I then experienced the same problems reported here - my DVDs would not play beyond 15 or so minutes in a DVD player. So, again following the advice here, I uninstalled Nero 8, and installed Nero 7. However, now when I go to use DVD Shrink, and click on Backup, it does not give me the option to burn to disc. Next to "select backup target" it says "(to enable burning, please install Nero)." It's as though DVD Shrink is not recognizing that Nero is installed on my computer any more. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Nero, and two different versions of Nero 7. No success. Nero itself works fine. It's just that DVD Shrink will not recognize it.
Any advice?
Thank you so much in advance.

Reinstall DVD Shrink also, and make sure you have checked the box that says "enable burning with Nero", or something like that(don't remember the exact wording).

As for Recode and Shrink, I see them as a pair of clones with little difference than the interface. Recode may be slightly faster using similar settings, but not enough to make a lot of difference. I agree, with Nero 8 not working properly with Shrink, Recode is good for those who like the auto burning feature. Or... you can add ImgBurn with support in Shrink for the best freeware option.
As for time with RB, the best way to work with it is to save your projects and let them run in Batch mode overnight or while you're at work or otherwise away from the PC. You'll find yourself using it more and more when you use that method. With a dual core, you can multi task while letting the batch run. Which I sometimes do. It can slow things down sometimes though.

Sorry, think I goofed this up as this is my first REPLY.
I too had to go thru lots of DVDs to find out that Nero 8 hoses the burns.
My Question is: PACman777 implies that IMGBURN can maybe be "installed" into Shrink somehow to replace the NERO engine?
Is this true? If so, can someone explain how?
Now i do the 2 step process of Shrink to HD, then Nero 8 to DVD but am going to try IMGBURN today.
Would be nice to put IMGBURN IN the shrink program to make it an one step process again.
Thanks
