DVD-R is best if your PlayStation 2 is Version 1, 2, or 3. From Version 4 to Version 14C, you can use DVD+Rs with a DVD-ROM booktype. This, according to what I'm seeing here, could be more compatible than DVD-Rs(someone please validate this). Remember, only certain brands of DVD burners support booktyping(list on the first page). Just remember, stick to Taiyo Yuden(you can find Taiyo dye in Sony DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs that are made in Japan with a white octagonal piece of styrofoam on top of the spindles(if the piece of styrofoam is gray and circular, those are made by Sony in Taiwan or Japan)). I have been using Taiyo Yuden media for one month and have always had success(not the DVDs, though, because I have some Taiyo Yuden-made Sony DVD+Rs that I have left aside to back up 2 games).
My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

I always thought Verbatim was very bad because they are always the cheapest at Wal-Mart so I stayed away from them.
I dont know why alot of you say Memorex sucks, those are the only types of DVD-R's that I buy and have never had one bad disk. Only time I had problems with a disk was when I didnt build the ISO correctly. I've only used them for Xbox games though and havent tried on the PS2 yet but im planning on starting soon, I dont see why there should be a difference.
I've also heard that memorex disks stop working after a while, not true either. I got some disks that are at least a year old and still work flawlessly.
Memorex is the brand that I've used for the longest time and I've had no problems with them at all. I always figured the brand was one of the best quality brands but I guess thats not the case with most of you.

Like I said no problems in over a year of DVD usage and well over three for CD's. It might be the burners ya use.

Jokerface, the problem with Memorex is its dye. The dye is junk(CMC Magnetics). It will harden a lot faster than normal(also cheaply manufactured), and whatever you have burnt on it will no longer work. Not only that, if you're using Memorex DVD-Rs with CMC Magnetics dye on your PlayStation 2, you will burn out your laser because of the crappy dye that's on those discs(the laser will have to work overtime to be able to read the data).

all right, i'm having problems. i just bought Verbatim DVD-R's... but i think my burner, which is a LiteOn 1693S, can only burn at the lowest speeds of 4x. someone told me they have the same exact discs as i do, and they are able to burn at 2x speed with their burner. is there a way i can tamper with the burner's settings so that i may burn as low as 1x or 2x? if not, what are some good burners that can burn at that low of a speed?
also, could someone explain to me what "booktyping" is about?
I love..... no one!

Taiyo Yuden uses purple dye. I have some Sony DVD+Rs with Taiyo dye and the base is purple. I presume that the Verbatims have blue dyes(those made by Mitsubishi Chemicals). I have only seen a CD-R, not a DVD-R/DVD+R, so maybe it's different on a DVD.

RiZZy46 - you don't have to burn at such a low speed - depends on your burner and media though. I have a Pioneer 109 burner and use good discs - Ritek - and burn all of my back ups at 8x and have never made any coasters.
