figured this site could use an informative thread about the PS3, and the differences between the two PS3 packages. (NOTE: this information is subject to CHANGE!!)
!@#$% - Playstation 3 has been delayed for the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia. it is scheduled to launch in March 2007 - !@#$%
Japan's launch date for the ps3 is November 11, 2006, north america(that includes canada) will have their launch on November 17, 2006
North America, First 500,000 PS3s will ship with Talladega Nights on Blu-ray
The two different packages(USD):
1). 20GIG HDD - $499.99
TGS 2006 Sony announced a price cut for the 20gig model, but it is ONLY for Japan
2). 60GIG HDD - $599.99
see *sony press release*
similarities between the two models are:
(1) online support, via a built in Ethernet plug
(2) wireless controllers (bluetooth)
(3) resolution - 480i up to 1080p (Both Models will have HDMI output. HDMI cable sold separate)
(4) backwards compatibility (ability to play original ps/ps2 games)
(5) Blu-ray format(able to watch/play media on BD discs)
(6) one color - black
(7) 4 USB 2.0 slots
(8) upgradeable HDD(if you want a larger hard drive you can buy one separate)
(9) CR-ROM,CDR+W,DVD,DVD-ROM,DVD-R,DVD+R support
so what is the difference between the two(besides the obvious)????
there are certain features missing from the 20gig model that people should probably understand. in a nutshell, the 20gig model LACKS:
(1) built-in support for Wi-Fi broadband
-if someone already had a wi-fi setup, there has been talk about being able to buy a network adapter, and hooking it up to the ps3's usb port....note - you DO NOT need an existing setup, just was an example
(2) SD and Compact Flash memory cards
-again talk of add-on adapters have been stated
(3) both models at launch will be available in black, BUT the 60gig model has a chrome trim and lettering...see ***model comparisson***
Controller redesign:
As most seen the ps3 was going to introduce a boomerang style controller which has been scraped. sony is sticking with the dualshock2 design. HOWEVER this controller will no longer feature "rumble," but instead incorporate a six-axis motion sensing system. users can maneuver the controller in six different axis (pitch up and down, yaw left and right, roll left and right) as a natural extension of their bodies, all in real-time and with high-precision. the offical name of the controller is SIXAXIS. with a full charge it is reported that the controller will be able to operate for up to 30 hours. (see)****Sony's new controller**** *****controller comparisson*****
Online Play:
Sony hasn't fully come out and said exactly What or How online is going to work. They have confirmed or stated that they are going to offer a service that is:
(1) similar to XBOX LIVE
(2) "basic" service is FREE
(3) downloadable content
(4) voice chat
Projected Game Prices:
$59.99-$99.99
Kazuo Hirai said something along the lines that, consumers typically expect game prices to range from $39.99 - $59.99, and that it would be unfit for them to suddenly ask consumers to pay double what we once paid. he also went on to say that if games are priced over $59.99 not to fault him.
there have already been several games announced for the ps3 along with their respected pricing. currently the price is set at $59.99. so in contrast to what many believe or the reported rumors, it would seem the game prices are comparable to the 360. Activision has already disclosed their games will be priced competatively at $59.99. GameStop is also posting a price of $59.99/game on their website, it could just be a placeholder for the time being meaining that the price is still yet to be confirmed and could change, but considering sony's website "sony style" has game prices set at $59.99, i don't expect game prices to increase that much if at all. (see)********projected game prices********
As always The Infamous question...."Do i need an HDTV to play a PS3???":
the short answer is NO. you do NOT need an HDTV to play a ps3. HOWEVER for someone to get the "most" out of their system, say graphically, then yes it is in their best interest to invest in a nice set. Games are still going to look better than those on the PS2 with an older set, but there will also be a definitive visual difference when upgrading a person's older tv. i'd recommend checking out ******Home theater display****** thread for advice or input.
PREORDERING:
it was stated shortly after the price announcement for the ps3, that sony actually had asked companys such as GameStop/Electronics Boutique to HOLD OFF on taking preorders. part of the reasoning stems from the shortage of 360s at launch and the misunderstanding consumers had when they preordered. most thought they were gauranteed their unit at launch which was not the case for many. either way it will allow companies to have a better understanding of the number of units each store is going to have, and hopefully handle preorders a little more efficiently. from past experiences, stores such as CIRCUIT CITY, WALMART, BEST BUY, TARGET, or even KMART do NOT take preorders. it is simply "first come, first serve." HOWEVER, i have seen numerous times people claiming GameCrazy, FYE, and in Canada toys r us were taking preorders.
for those who may be interested in "camping out" at say BEST BUY, my advice to you is:
(1) know the weather forecast ---remember it will be november
(2) pack a meal(s), snacks, and of course something to sit on
(3) bring something to keep yourself occupied---magazines, handhelds, books, homework etc
(4) know your surroundings---keep in mind a lot of people will know how much the ps3 will cost and considering people will be carrying plastic or upwards of $500.00, whose to say you wouldnt be a potential target
(5) try to go with atleast one other person
How do I save my PlayStation®2 Memory Card information to PLAYSTATION®3??:(taken directly from sony's official site)
"To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card."
How Will the PSP Interact With the PS3??:
(1) the psp can act as a remote (remote control)
(2) ability to transfer data from the psp to the ps3 via USB or memory stick
(3) for the formula One racing game, the developers used the PSP as a "rear-view mirror" (developers have the ability to make use of the psp, and how it could interact with the ps3)
What Is Blu-Ray:
"Blu-ray (BD) is a next-generation media format that delivers the ultimate high-definition entertainment experience. Just like the DVD format offered a technological leap over CDs, Blu-ray Disc? is the next leap forward in the natural advancement of data storage and digital entertainment.
? Supports five to ten times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs. In other words, one BD can replace five to ten DVDs (using 4-layer, 100GB BD)
? Pristine picture quality with the capability for full high-definition resolution 1080p
? Blu-ray Disc gives consumers a smooth way to transition to high-definition by protecting their DVD investments; Blu-ray Disc players are compatible with DVD so existing DVD collections can be enjoyed on Blu-ray hardware"(courtesy of http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/about.html)
TGS Game Show:
for those who do not already know, TGS or Toyko Game Show is basically a mini E3. this year marks the 10th anniversary, and it is predicted to be its largest show to date. The Toyko Game Show will be held September 22-24 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. similarly to E3 and considering this is probably sony's last opportunity to show off the ps3, TGS could reveal some much needed info. regarding game pricing, online abilities/features, official launch listing, etc. expect to see some new trailers for upcoming releases and more playable demos. on August 23rd IGN released a list of confirmed playable titles for the ps3. they are:
# Railfan (Ongakukan)
# Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom)
# Fatal Inertia (Koei)
# Blade Storm (Koei)
# Mahjong Taikai IV (Koei)
# Coded Arms Assault (Konami Digital Entertainment)
# Genji (SCEJ)
# Formula One World Championship (SCEJ)
# Heavenly Sword (SCEJ)
# Lair (SCEJ)
# MotorStorm (SCEJ)
# Resistance Fall of Man (SCEJ)
# The Eye of Judgment (SCEJ)
# Warhawk (SCEJ)
# Gran Turismo Series (SCEJ)
# Minna no Golf 5 (aka Hot Shots Golf, SCEJ)
# Ridge Racer (Bandai Namco Games)
# Gundam Target in Sight (Bandai Namco Games)
# Armored Core 4 (From Software)
TGS kicked off today with sony announcing a few shockers. First they announced a price cut, but only for japan's 20gig model. no other territory included, so the european/US prices remain the same. Secondly the 20gig model will also feature HDMI output. this was a feature that was originally missing from the 20gig model, but it would seem sony did some homework and listened to the public.

i think this helps clear up some of the gray areas. people should understand the differences between the two models, so when the time comes for those who are getting a ps3, they end up with the model they wanted...

^^^ironic you say that....its simply a collection of ps3 information that is somewhat broken down into an outline, not so sure how many different ways there are to do this. Consider this statement:
Quote: Due to vandalism, editing of this article by anonymous or newly-registered users is disabled (see semi-protection policy). Such users may discuss changes, request unprotection, or create an account.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3
plus i would think most already know....wikipedia is not the greatest source for information, but it is nice to get a general idea about things. nothing i'd use to cite in a research paper though, but there style for separating information is fairly standard. most of the info came from the links provided along with some interviews/articles from PSM. i doubt anyone would want to read an essay about this stuff....

Good to point out the main thigns High def displey on the low end PS3 is not crippled but its still handicaped,if hollywood has its way and gets the newer BR into a HDMI setup then mabye sony can make a frimware to fool it but who knows at this point...
Uumm I thought bluetooth was not on the low end I cant find any hard evidance it is 0-o
the low end one has wired pads and a non glowing remote

wait found this

""""
A week after the announcement, Sony representatives have gone on record with the press, officially clarifying that the $499 console will support Bluetooth and that Wi-Fi adapters and flash-memory reader add-ons will be made available for the console.
"""
might want to change that no blue tooth on the low end its a upgrade..soooo my question is why not ahve a HDMI upgrade? 0_o

Eh....They have said it will be 1.3 hdmi spec.
If your saying : Why won't the sub-primo version have hdmi? Than you could say the same about the other consoles :)The 360 only outputs to 1080i via av cables and the wii will only 480p .You really don't wanna get started on this do ya?
Your other points really are stupid so I don't point them out.Sorry you know I like ya ZIppyDSM but had to point it out.Lol.My bad dizzzog!

By the way concerning your link as hade and me pointed out.1080p can be had with component jacks NOT JUST hdmi.Making the core system have the ability to out put 1080p.And yes a digital connection is better(huh hade?)than analog, but the core version will have a great pic nonetheless. However it is the hdcp that will cripple it to a lower resolution.
*******None of this has anything to do with games just movies*******
The games can still be hd@60fps so it will have a much greater output for games whether it's the core or the primo.

so my other point about bluetooth NOT being in the low end version is stupid?
I knw the rest float on the see of tranquilty a bit to much..but....
LOL
No My question/point about the PS3 is why not have a simple isntall daughter card or external device to upgrade the PS3 to HDMI thus skiping the whole 2 system thing.....that way chrage more for the "upgrades" and sell more base units, they way they have it set they wont be selling half of much....mabye to controll how many sold within the frist few years? 0-o

I mean come one the priceing is all wrong and the diffreance is worse,no wi fi,no card reader and no HDMI whats the point of saveing 100?? there is non ><
From what I heard the reason why the PS3 dosent have rumble feature was becuse they lost a lawsuit over it and could not use the rumble thign anymore 0-o

i haven't seen anything stating the 20gig model won't support wireless controllers, or won't include them out of box.
Quote: I mean come one the priceing is all wrong and the diffreance is worse,no wi fi,no card reader and no HDMI whats the point of saveing 100?? there is non ><
WiFi is not that big of a deal, you should still be able to achieve a wireless setup if you read the example. HDMI, considering that not everyone has an HDTV and most probably don't have a set that can achieve 1080p, its not a huge setback. if you realize and understand the differences just get the model you want. both have their differences, for better or worse...
Quote: From what I heard the reason why the PS3 dosent have rumble feature was becuse they lost a lawsuit over it and could not use the rumble thign anymore 0-o
it sure as hell as something or i should say EVERYTHING to do with the lawsuit sony lost. technically sony COULD put the rumble feature in their controller, regardless of what they say. they would simply have to pay royalties, which they are not about to do. again the example i used before was playing F.E.A.R. on my computer which does not have rumble, and the fact that i never missed or noticed the the lacking feature. i still enjoyed the game.

I just dont see sony being nice and puting the wi fi controllers in the low end one if they do great but I jsut dont see it.
Well my point is most dont understand and the fact tis only 100 in diffrance is even more a reson not have the 500 one altogather they should drop it another 100 and make it 400 even to mae up for the lose, but as it stands your better off jsut gettign the high end version theres little point in gettign the 499 one.it feel like a rush job just throw whatever out and people will by it up.....they should ahve thought it through had the low end without wi fi and blue tooth and such and give the people the abilty to buy upgrades,No HDMI can be troublesome in the future when hollywood turns on its DRM in the new format moives...altho I hear at worest it just make the qauilty non HD but knowing hollywood and its vendros they will make moives DRM only ...
Funny sony makes others pay rolityes but wont do so itself *L*
I kinda like the rumble feature hell the only game that I have ever palyed that use of it was Zelda 64 and the rumble to find hidden stuff *L*
the tilt and paly thing is kinda dumb if you ask me oh well they are out of time and had to throw soemthign into it 0-o
can you imagtion the horrable mini games in games that will make use of the tilt thing uhg...altho I guess you could make it useful....mmmmmm
Do you know if anyone has pined down Sony to have wireless pad with the low end ps3?

"Rumors spread like wild fire that the $499 machine was also missing Bluetooth support for wireless controllers, spreading fury among fans and detractors alike. A week after the announcement, Sony representatives have gone on record with the press, officially clarifying that the $499 console will support Bluetooth and that Wi-Fi adapters and flash-memory reader add-ons will be made available for the console. The hard-drive will also be upgradeable....."
also
"Until Sony announces a $499 PS3 design change, we at IGN Gear can, in good faith, only recommend that interested buyers steer clear of the lower-priced PS3 model or make the purchase fully aware that they may in future suffer severe repercussions when it comes to Blu-ray movie playback"
i second that....
http://gear.ign.com/articles/709/709495p1.html
it would have been nice of sony to release only one system like years past, but unfortunately that will not be the case. i am positive there will be people who buy the wrong system because they simply did not know or understand the differences....

@eureka21
"The HDCP system is the means by which each piece of hardware involved in transmitting a High-Def movie signal, from player, to wire, to amplifier, to HDTV or computer monitor, checks for support and protection from hacking and piracy before passing the signal along the chain. Each device must have a specially programmed HDCP chip, and any link in the chain that lacks such protection will cause the entire system to fail, causing movies encoded in 1080p Hi-Def to down-convert to 540p, by means of what is known as the "Image Constraint Token" capability of AACS/HDCP copy-protection scheme."
you can still play Blu-ray movies on the $499.99 ps3. if this is inacted you simply won't be able to view those movies in Hi-Def, which basically defeats the purpose of Blu-ray.

It says the movies will be able to go into full 1080 after a 1 or 2 year grace period, and i mean HD is cool but like on movies...i can't tell a huge difference....like the ppl at Best Buy even say HDTV is "over rated" it does make video games look really good though. But actaul tv i duno it's just not that amazing
