well i think its pretty much certain that japan will have more wii sales than ps3 sales in the month of november. Simply because nintendo is releasing a heck of a lot more units than sony is, and yes the ps3 games are said to be region free...
"If this is true, why not just import a PS3 from Japan...depends on how big the price drop is though."
i'd imagine you'd have to pay a reasonable sum to import the system. i doubt they have free international shipping from japan.

What are the advantages of PS3 vs. the PS2?
What are the advantages of PS3 over Nintentdo WII? Why pay $500 bucks now?

PS2 wont have any new games made for it PS3 looks better than Xbox
Now most can deb ate on the reasons why the PS3 is better than a WII...I frankly like the WII more because of innovation and price the PS3 is mostly a glorified media center that can do games.
PS3
PS3 Potential
PS2 game series
Games made on blue ray a basic max of 22GB a game
Default HD for games(altho a HD has yet to be used alot for console gaming)
PS3 has enough power to be equal with current computer graphics for a year or 2.
PS3
short comings
PRICE PRICE PRICE PRICE 500-600 for the console
Games are still ore graphics than depth and game play..making them not worth the 50 they want for most and sony wants 60-90 a pop.

PS2 should stop getting games in what 2-4 years?
Unless sony treats the PS3 differently thats about how long it takes for a system to be left behind,no telling when they will stop making them.

Why pay the $500-$600 now when the price is certain to drop after the Christmas rush?
Sony announced they will reduce the price of PS3 in Japan by 20 percent to better compete with Microsoft and Nintendo. Any thoughts???

for me theres no reason to get it now even at a price of 350 it still to much money to put into something that has yet to show gameplay has improved.
the way sony is going you wont see a price drop on the PS3 in the states till at least summer of 08 and thats if they get it out this year...
The reason for the Price drop in japan is 1.they are releasing it world wide at one time thus need to get their japanase market in high gear thats why it was droped 90$

Techbowl,
Are you an online gamer? If you are I would consider PS3 over Wii. As far as I know Wii only has "Wiiconnect24" which allows for updates and such, but I don't know if they are taking their games online too. If you want to get into the Blue Ray DVDs for half the price than the current BR player and have a compatible 720p or 1080p tv I would consider PS3. So far, I think Wii has a broader selection of games at release, and the graphics are pretty cool too but I think to myself about spending a couple of hours or more with the Wii controler and I cringe. To me it seems too small for my hands and I would probably end up with hand cramps after 30 minutes, especially on games that require lots of button pressing (shooter games). I wonder if Wii is coming out with another, more practical controller for us big-handed people.

Does anyone think the PS3 is backed by their reputation to the casual, high school/college student that has the mindset that Playstation is superior to any Nintendo product?

im not going to sit here and sell you on one console over another, but considering your last post i'll add some insight. Being in my early 20s and going to college, i fail to see hardly if any students walking around campus playing with a DS. fairly i should also say i don't generally see too many people with a psp, but there are a few. most actually carry their laptops around....
so why would i mention that? well because if you or others are like me, its not really a matter of sony having a "superior" product over nintendo or vice versa, but actually which of the two companies deliver on fulfililng my needs/wants/desires. that kind of thing.
in my mind nintendo has and seems to be following the same path as before, a company that gears their stuff for the younger crowd namely kids. i say and support this by simply looking at their past systems along with the wii titles. i am not saying that there is not or won't be any mature games meant for adults on the system, but as a whole its main audience is the younger crowd. the wii isn't really getting too much of my attention, and the $250 price tag is a bit much considering i could get the 360 for $50 more. their accessories are a bit high in price, and i believe their games will retail around $40-50, so again its just not something that interest me at this point. nintendo was the champ when i was young, but their consoles failed to grow up with me.
the ps3 is not meant for everyone. i happend to really enjoy playing ps2 and expect more of the same with the ps3. sony has established their name and basically owns the market, so until THEY(sony) give me a reason NOT to want their system or their games, they'll always have my business. i think the pricing is reasonable for what it offers, and seeing that game prices are resembling those of the 360, im quite happy. no other console has continually delivered the way sony has. same could have been said about m$ and the xbox, but they failed miserably their first time around. so until they can prove themselves, i'll stick to what has worked and provided endless hours of entertainment for me for the last 10 years or so...

I have to agree with Hade. I am 27 and in college, but grew up on Atari and Nintendo/SNES. So I have no dislike for Nintendo at all but as I grew older and kinda wanted (okay, really wanted) the more violent games. Sony was the only option for that at the time unless you owned a pc which back then, not everyone had.
I remember when Mortal Kombat came out on SNES people got their panties in a bunch from the violence and from then on Nintendo started to play it on the safe side while Sony went all out with Resident Evil. So, its not so much that Sony targets college students, but the more mature crowd wants a more mature variety of games (blood and guts).
Nintendo gave themselves a reputation of being a family console(no blood and guts)
So to answer your question, PS3 gave itself a reputation of giving consumers what they want. This way kids can play kid games and adults can play adult games on the same console, plus watch a movie, store pics and videos and so on. BTW, the PS3 will now play DVD-R, which the PS2 had much trouble with. So to me, and its only my opinion, Sony's variety, quality, and commitment to the consumer equal a superior product even for the price.

^^i appreciate the complement. originally i put the links at the bottom of the page so people would read everything. i guess one could argue and say its a pain to scroll down and then have to find your place again, but with the links at the end, i think the description and things are pretty straight forward.

i live in the uk so there is no ps3 this year for me, no biggie most of the faults will be found by the time we get them. but i will try to get one on launch day by camping at walmart(its called asda over here but anyway).
i will be getting the core(cheaper) version as to my knoledge it will have hdmi, flash card reader and bluetooth. the only things it lacks are the wifi, a chrome trim along the front and the larger hdd. now with the £100 i save by getting this model i can get a router and a 80gig hdd.
from what i can tell sony have put the hdmi on this one so that when(not if) hollywood put the new DRM on the films it will work, because as far as i understand the signal that the player gets back from the display doesnt work on componant cables, only on digital ones.
on a side note cant wait to see what problems come with the ps3 when it is first launched, and the ps3 grill could be one of them, thats ace by the way:)

I'm planning on getting a PS3 at launch, but I'm not concerned with any bugs because I am goona buy it at Best Buy and they a have a 3 year replacement warrenty that if you have any problems they replace it for free, no questions asked. So there is really no risk involved.

I understand where you are coming from on that, but imagine that you have been p;laying a game for hours and hours and hours just getting everything there is to get and whatnot, and then your system messes up. Sure it can be replaced, but all your hard work cannot. And what if it happens more than once, it could get very annoying. I'm actually trying to decide whether I want to take the risk or not.

When I play games I periodically save the game in case of power surges or anything else unforseen. Losing a save game would mean a total system crash in the HDD, which I doubt will happen. The last time I lost everything was on Zelda on the NES, and that was almost 20 years ago. As long as you save your progress you should be fine.
