Cool, you paste it in the mc0/BOOT folder
Read this section (config options) if you want to boot other elfs later and have them configured.

Copy the entire BOOT folder to your MC, Not just boot.ELF.
Do not Name your Boot folder BOOT.ELF (in case you did)
Paste it to your MC. Do not paste in a folder that is already on your MC. It will make the Boot Folder for you.

If you already had fmcb installed to mc, and you said it worked as long as you had the usb drive in the PS2
Then just do what Rebootedc said in how to copy the BOOT.ELF to mc
Then you should only have to reboot PS2 without the usb drive in, and it should load up.

LOL... I've had a softmod Xbox for around 2.5 years, but only tried this MC exploit a few days ago. For the guy above, congrats. I used the CNF configurator to change the auto function to the boot.elf I copied from my USB stick to the MC.
I'm curious on this one thing I tried. First of all, I ran the MCBoot exploit using Codebreaker v10 and a self configured codebreaker save file I found on the net. It loaded SMS and then the MCBoot install. All fine and dandy.
I then read on sksapps, a guide about HD project 1.07. I thought that this was something I needed in order to use a HDD on my PS2, so I went through their process, created an image for my memory card and flashed it with their software. What exactly did that do and did I gain anything from doing it? Seems to me like it was a waste of 5 minutes when I still have uLaunch boot and need to separately load the HDL elf... or did I misunderstand this whole deal? There's so many acronyms and jargon thrown around some of the forums I research that I maybe missed something obvious. What is HD Project 1.07 and what does it do?
Sorry for the mess of questions. I really hate that I got this far and still have n00b issues like this!

well after flashing my xbox360 and also my psp and many other mods this one was the worst i have ever done .and still have got nowhere .and no one mentions that you still need to patch the iso to get this method to work?
when my ulaunch starts up how do i configure it to load free mcboot ?
quote from SProdigy from SProdigy>Here is something that's bugging me: I saw screenshot on the web of a hacked PS2 boot screen that says "Browser" "System Configuration" "Start Free MCBoot". Do you know anything about this Smoky? You seem to be pretty knowledgeable.
if you hit circle on booting of ps2 you will see that screen. circle is the browser by default with ulaunch
and yes i thought also i would see that before ulaunch loads as shown on that youtube video
someone needs to make a detailed guide on this whole project :)

Yeah Neptune, it's confusing as hell, even for a PC wiz like me. I just edited that last post. Figured out that I was using one of MANY old exploit files/guides out there. I used MCBoot 1.5 and it adds the 3rd option to the menu.
I was trying to auto boot to the OSDSYS (PS2 Main Menu with browser, etc.) and now when loading MCBoot off the main menu, it loops back to the menu! Now I need to go back to square one, as it looks like auto booting is out of the question. Just thought it would be cool to not have to hold down "X" to boot to the menu, or whatever boots uLaunch, which I'm pretty sure I wiped from my CNF file!
To answer your last question: If you're getting uLaunch, I'm not sure why you need to load MCBoot. MCBoot is the actual exploit installer for the memory card (MC). Unless maybe you need to install to another card? I just did that myself a bit ago and formatted my MC and used 1.5 to load, since my other exploit was a premade image with older ULE (ulaunch) and didn't add the "Free MCBoot" to the Sony menu.
It's all getting clearer now!

Neptune, I believe you need ESR to boot backups. At this time, I don't think you can load PSX games, only PS2 ones. You either have to use a patcher for your backups to work with ESR or there is a way with using a DVD Video. It's in this same post, 25 or so back (I read it during my reply to you.)
Since my laser is dying, I found it alot easier to use HD Loader and put a hard drive in my PS2. I have an old "chubby" system with the screw-in network card attachment, so it was easy to pop in a hard drive, and load HDL off of uLaunch. I copied my images using my PC to the drive I use in my PS2. It's a bit time consuming, but worth it, especially for my crappy DVD drive!

Neptune, uLaunch is like a explorer for your PS2. It allows you to navigate through all the devices installed in your PS2 and it allows you to execute any ELF you choose.
That capability (executing ELFs) is priceless, since you can have a USB stick full of utilities (USBAdvance, SMS, PS2Reality, HDLoader, etc...) and launch anytime any of those utilities.
It also allows you to launch your DVD/CD games from "CDFS:" device.
What I recomend you is to look for USBExtreme utilities, and begin dumping your games to a USB HardDrive and give a try to USBAdvance.
Now, glossary:
USBExtreme: Bunch of utilities that allows you ripping your games to a USB stick/hard drive.
USBAdvance: It's a PS2 utility that allows you executing previously "USBExtreme" ripped games. However not all the games are compatible.
SMS: It's a media player that allows you playing DivX, XviD, mp3, etc. from a USB stick/hard drive.
PS2Reality: It's also a media player, but it allows you to play videos and music only from a CD/DVD.
HDLoader: It's a bunch of utilities and a PS2 launcher that permits you executing games from a HardDisk installed in the harddisk port of the PS2.
McBoot: An installer of the Independence exploit.
uLaunch: It's like a explorer, but for PS2. Allows you to navigate through the devices on your PS2 and executing ELFs.
ELF: PS2 executable file. (It's like PC's EXE, but intended for PS2)
Ha, ha!

Once uLaunch is started up, and you want to start a PS2 game, just navigate to "cdfs:" and then, execute the file SL?SXXXX.XXX that should appear in the CD/DVD

To make things clear for some.
All any form of FMCB will do for you is to let you launch a PS2 homebrew elf file..but then you can add other elf files to launch from mc, hdd, usb etc.
Basically to start is uLe.
To configure uLe isn't hard either.
This tutorial explains everything about uLe to configure it and use it.
http://www.console-exploits.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9646
Read it and look at the pics.
As for booting directly from the browser like in the videos.
I have not done it yet, but basically he directly embeds ESR as DVD-Player-Upgrade (DVD-VITEO-TS-FS-Xploit), or embedds RUNME 1.1a-ELF, to load ESR, without a buttonpress
http://psx-scene.com/forums/swapmod-nomo...s2-browser.html
Just check all the links at the bottom posts by me (windrider)and undO
All the info one needs is on the psx forums, one just needs to do a search.
And some of the files you have found before like hdloader project etc, were used for the older mc free boot installers to get info from your PS2.
The tutorials are clear and I myself had made a tutorial on installing fmcb on my blog.
As for watching youtube videos they are fine but do not always explain everything. Some do, some don't.
ESR is what you need to play backups, but you also need to patch the backup ISOs before burning them to DVD-R discs.
It is only that patch which can make the mechacon processor inside the CDVD drive of the PS2 believe that this DVD-R game backup is a DVD-Video, and thus legal for reading. And then ESR steps in and makes the real PS2 processors believe that this disc with DVD-Video filesystem on it is in fact a normal DVDROM game disc.
There seem now to be methods that people are using to boot backups without patching the ISO, but you will have to try the browser method above and see if it works
or the method posted above a few posts back, using an original DVD movie, booting to ule, then swapping for backup and launching your ESR beta 9

One more question. I've seen that you may have to patch some games to get them to work. I'm more interested in using HDL since my laser is practically dead. I've made backup copies of a few games so far, and some do not load (NBA Street Vol. 3, XIII, for example.) Is there another step to patching. I know ESR has a patcher, then I've read about Memento and also am familiar with PPF. Which should I use for HDL?

XIII works with hdloader. Did you use mode 3 enable.
PPF is the patcher used to fix games used with hdloader. Winhiip 1.7.6 has it built in, just browse to the patch and it will patch it.
As some have wondered now with ESR in the picture, will anyone even work on patches for hdloader to make games work.
There are fixes for some games on sksapps.com under hdd tab.You have to scroll down to them.
Another way to get some games to work on hdd, is to follow this guide.

@Neptune,
When you run FMBC 1.5 do you see in red at the top of the screen
FAILED TO Launch mc0:\Ulaunch.CNF?
If your answer is YES, then you need to configure it to work.
Here's how: From the Ulaunch Screen.
1)Press SELECT on your controller.
2)Move the curser to the X and press O (circle).
3)Browse to the location of your ELF File you want to load (ESR beta r8 dvdv direct.elf) and press O, again. (Brings you back to Ulaunch)
4) Move the curser to ok.
Restart the PS2 with patched game backup in the drive.
Ulaunch screen will load. Press X on your controller.
Play your game.
(X was the configured button so this is the one you press. You can do the same for the other buttons)

Anyone have a little more info on ESR or a link? I've been on PSX Scene and it's all techno-babble. I just want the ABC's of what 1) the software does 2) how to use 3) what I need to do on my end to get it to work (configuring system, backups, games, etc.)
Smoky, you said that with ESR, HDL may not be as supported, but can ESR load from the HDD? The main reason I tried all of this is because my DVD laser is toasted!
I've loaded the ESR elf from uLaunch, just like Neptune and I get a black screen. Is there a GUI or anything else to it, or is ESR just a launcher for backups on CD/DVD media?

No you can't just copy to another mc. You would have to do the install again to a new mc
Actually there isn't really a list, but a thread started for which games are compatible, and which aren't
http://psx-scene.com/forums/freevast/584...ility-list.html
Most all of them should work with the ESR 9

Yes here is the link to ESR
Yes I used ule first then copy elf files to my hdd /boot folder
and then launch elfs.
Did you have a disk in the drive that was patched, when you loaded ESR?
Yes it is just a launcher for DVD media. CD first have to be converted to DVD to work.

Yep, that'll be about as useless as a bull with boobs for me! My laser is dead. Guess I'll have to deal with whatever loads with HDL for now.
I looked at a few posts back and you mentioned "Mode 3" enabled. What exactly does this refer to?
