Scroll down the page to UsBAdvance, you will see USB Extreme Win32 utility , or you can use USB Insane to transfer the ISO images to your USB hdd.
You will need to format you drive as FAT32.
Read the tutorials I gave links to and this one if you wish.

I will try those steps, I formated it FIRST FAT, the used the USB Extreme and added the games, ELF can see the files, but wont load them... so SMS is not what I should use.
Then which one?

Check out the latest fmcb 1.7 tutorials.

And soon 1.8 will be released.

ESR Public Beta thread
http://psx-scene.com/forums/freevast/58441-esr-public-beta.html
YOu need to patch the ISO with ESR disc patcher v0.24a
Read this important Note on the types of ESR elfs.
I'm attaching set of three applications.
One is intended for launching games directly from dvd (but can also launch homebrew apps from DVDV discs, just SYSTEM.CNF and proper elf is needed) - "dvd direct" version .
The other is to launch elf files in either mcx:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF or mcx:/B?DATA-SYSTEM/BOOT.ELF - "mcard" version.
The third is "dvd direct off" version, which is almost the same as the "dvd direct" but will disable ESR after first full successful IOP reset (think about it as "mode 3" in hdloader.
All should have similar compatibility (with obvious limitations for "off" version).
The one you will use is the ESR beta r9b dvdv direct.elf

So to clarify, this is:
-Better than HD Loader
-Loads a patched backed up game on DVD+RW without the need to swap disks
Does this work on a slim? I have 1 slim and 2 fats. Can anybody clarify what it does if I am wrong above.

Hi.
I have a v13 slim ps2 with a broken laser.
Does this now mean I can load games directly from USB stick or a hard drive_.
Please could someone point me at a beginners tutorial to do this.
Thanks,
Nick

The tutorials are posted here on fmcb, but you first need a way to install it.
In your case with a broken laser, there is no way.
The only way for you is too get someone to install to mc for you.
Then once installed to mc, you can boot from a USB drive using USbadvance or you can get a hddcombo and run games from a IDE hdd (better compatibility)
You do realize you can get a PS2 laser pretty cheap anymore for V13
http://store.richspsxparts.com/slpvps2lahef.html
Depending what laser you need.

Thanks for the help. Am I correct in assuming that I would have to purchase the retail AR Max EVO disc in order to install to mc on my mates unmodded machine? Or is there a way to use a backup copy of AR Max EVO disc on his machine.
Thanks again.

There is no way of course to use a backup copy of Ar MAx Evo on an unmodded PS2
So yes you would need to purchase the Armax Evo with media player
to be able to install fmcb 1.7 on the mc.
you would then do the Multi-Install of fmcb so it would work on your PS2.

Unfortunately I have no colleagues with a chipped PS2. My PS2 is lying dead since I burnt the laser trying to install a modchip. The modchip got uninstalled and stamped on in anger!
Here's a long shot since youve been so helpful so far. If I were to post you my memory card????? with return postage paid of course

Yet another question sorry:
quote "Launch the Free MC Boot v1.2c.elf from a USB stick, or from your memcard,
and your good to go. "
Therefore, can I not install FMCB from my pc to a USB stick without having to touch the MC?
Apologies if this is a dumb question and I am missing something fundamental.
Cheers, Nick.

Yes I could install it for you. I have done quite a few for people.

Basically because the USB speed of the PS2 is 1.1, not as many games are compatible with UsbAdvance as they are with Hdloader on an IDE hdd.

No that won't work, because your mc cannot be connected to the pc.
fmcb must be installed to mc, not copied.
Only the memor32 card can do that. Link
That is why on the PS2, a method of being able to see the USB drive is needed.

My only concern is that my console is a european model.
Quote: (Free McBoot MUST be installed to a Memory Card and can not be copied off another. A copy will only work on the MC it was installed on.
Cross Region installations will not work! This means installing with a console from one region will not work on another console from a different region.)
Does this mean you wont be able to do my card as your machine is probably NTSC?
If however you believe it will work, please send me your address to which I can post the card.
Thanks for all your help,
Nick
