@vurbal,

Hi and it's nice to see you used (still use?) DVDStripper. I can tell you that the chances are that the error you experienced with Farscape may be the IFO's after IFOEdit has finished with them due to IFOEdit unresolved bugs & issues :(. I found a few that affected certain DVD structures and we overcame some by fixing the IFO's afterwards but not all as development slowed right down to a standstill :(

as for DVDRemake question you asked, IIRC it replaces the cell with a blank but also inserts a command to jump

@Sophocles, I've just browsed through the thread and although vurbal has mentioned the thread at cdr-zone I will repeat it just in case people missed it. I'd recommend people don't use PowerDVD as as test player as it plays non-compliant DVD's especially those with stripped content and I learn't the hard way with my Sony DVD last year (now sold :))

I do think the best player to use for playback testing is Mark's Tray DVD Player. For those more advanced it also shows what the parameter values are at any time along with making a log that includes navigation paths. It also will tell you that something is wrong with the DVD if it can tell you what it is

http://videoproductions.com.au/dvd-lab/ is the link and you can look for DVDTrayplayer

I'm still learning about DRM myself but it's nice to know I'm helping others like I did with my previous backup guides

I just wish there was more hours in the day and you didn't have to work for a living :(

Thanks, I've already joined the CD-R Zone forum and got that information there and I think it was from your post. I've not posted on the forum yet because I don't feel experienced enough using DVDremake but I'm working on it.

MackemX, welcome or I guess it's welcome back to AD, we can always use more input on remake. Absolutely the best re-authoring tool I've seen out there. Maybe you'll be the one who can help me figure out why I can only get it to work with rbldr/cce once in a blue moon. I'm batting a 1,000 with it and other apps ie. Instantcopy 8 and Intervideo dvdcopy 2. Lokking forward to your guides, I think vurbal is preparing one also. Maybe we'll have a bake off. LOL PS-I just installed Mark's Tray DVD Player, it should help speed up testing in rbldr/cce with remake.

MackemX,
Thanks for the answers. I used DVD Stripper up until I got DVDRemake yesterday. After playing with DRM for a couple of hours I've been already been able to strip The Matrix enough to back it up with DVD-RB so I'm very excited about doing Farscape with it. I still have 3 seasons worth of discs to go so all isn't lost. Plus DVD Stripper actually taught me a lot about DVD menus so I certainly don't regret using it. I started looking at one of your guides for DRM last night, but I get caught up on tangets very easily and I haven't gotten back to it yet. Hopefully I'll get my own basic guide done in the next week or so and then I can move on to the really cool stuff.

For now I'd better get done with the screenshots for my DVD-RB advanced guide before some of the members here lynch me. 8D

I suspect that no one guide is going to fully explain how to use DVDremake unless the structure of a DVD is comprehensively explained.

Another alternative would be to come up with individual movie recipes, which would be very helpful to new and skilled users alike, but a tedious task for its chefs.

I'm thinking the best approach is to have a basic guide with a bunch of common tasks and then some more specific guides that walk through backing up specific movies with specific challenges. Honestly after trying it out the hardest part for me is where to start. Every time I start working on how to do something I get sidetracked when I notice something else that looks cool. You wouldn't know it from my guides (I hope), but that's how I approach most things, and it works for me.

Crap! Distracted again. Back to the screenshots. I'll get that guide finished tonight. Really. I promise.

Good news. I've finished and submitted the DVD Rebuilder guide, now split into 2 guides so as not to overwhelm new users. I don't know when they'll be up for sure since that's dependent on Ketola's schedule, but I'm sure he'll get to it as soon as he has a chance as he always does.

Doc409,
Were you looking for a good movie to try with DVD Rebuilder or DVDRemake? You'll have to excuse me because my brain is fried from working on guides for hours. To find a good movie for Rebuilder I suggest opening the DVD you want to backup with DVD Shrink to analyze it. If you click the Reauthor button and there are more main movies listed than there should be, Rebuilder can't back it up without pre-processing to remove extra angles or ILVU. Otherwise it should be fine.

vurbal...

I was thinking that you were doing a ReMake guide? I did start out the Rebuilder route, though, but I couldn't find all the pieces - including the MPEG2Dec3dg.dll. Then I saw this thread about ReMake...and I thought it would be worth a try. I've played around with the interface a bit to get comfortable...and hope to sit down with a guide this weekend and get serious.
---------
After posting this I came across the AD Rebuilder guide...and it had the driver. I had been using a doom9 guide that had out-of-date links. Oh well...

@Sophocles, your right as it's hard to create one full guide when there are so many things you can do

@bigorange, thanks for welcome back ;)

@vurbal, sounds familiar :D It's like being in the Matrix isn't it?, after you start playing with a DVD in DRM and even more so when trying to write a guide

to make things easier on my brain I'm gonna backup some home-made porn movies as I know they definitely ain't that complicated LOL :D

Doc409,
Sorry for the confusion yesterday, but as I said my brain was a little fried from guide writing. Yes, I'm working on a DRM guide and I expect it to be done in pretty short order. The basic stuff is very easy, and as long as I don't get to distracted playing with it, I don't see a guide taking more than a week from today. If you want a good movie to start with I have 2 recommendations. The first one is any Disney movie. They tend to have multiple angles and you can pretty much always fit them on a single DVD-R with no compression if you remove enough stuff. The next is The Matrix. It's a more complex project, but since there's probably more information about the structure of this movie available on the internet than any other. I can't yet tell you exactly which features are available in the regular version vs. the Pro version, although after today that may change. I can tell you that The Matrix can only be done with Pro because it has ILVU in it and only Pro can handle that (but it only took me about half an hour to do what I wanted with it. If you don't have any Disney movies, you could rent one just to try it out and not actually make the copy, or you could post a short list of movies you need to backup and if anyone here has tried one of them we can hopefully give you a good suggestion or 2.

MackemX,
Yes, it's a lot like being in the Matrix. Now if I can just get that "bending the rules" thing down I won't need any more software. 8D

If you've got a copy of DareDevil I promise that you will get to play with multi angles and interleaving. I seem to recall that DVDremake counted 12 angles in the movie.

'Sounds like you're absorbed in the middle of the creative process. It does tend to fry the brain...and it'll take you all over the board...but it's a damn good ride. Try to control it, though, and it'll take a walk on you.

Thanks guys for the movie suggestions. I did get Remake Pro. I have a few Disneys, Matrix...and DareDevil is on the list. I also have some double angle ones. I'm wondering if it's the number of angles that increases the complexity...or if the bumps I need to watch out for are elsewhere? What I would really like to do is get through the complete process first without getting derailed. I've often found that if I can just get a glimpse at the "big picture" first, I can build on it pretty quickly from there.

Doc

Any multi angeled, interleaved movie is going to require some editing regardles of the angle count. With DareDevil I right clicked on every title set and chose hide all blocks until I reached the title set with the main movie in it, it's easy to recognize because of its size. that alone allowed it to be recongnized by DVDrebuilder. After that I went through to make sure I removed any splash screens or other irrelevant material.

I wish I'd written all the steps down because I suspect that most people are going to start learning the process through recipes/walk-throughs. If you try DVDreuilder with DareDevil first without editing it you'll be stopped by a warning of multi angles and interleaves but if you do as I suggested at the top the movie should work.

Normal multi-angles are a snap with Remake. Right click on the title with the multiple angles and select Strip Angles. At least I think it's that simple. I haven't gotten a chance to test that yet.

Where it gets hard is on projects like I'm working on now with one of my 2 new Farscape discs. I'm reasonably sure that whoever authored it was either a genius or on crack. No, really, it had to be one or the other. On every disc in the series (the 12 I have so far anyway) there are previews for anime titles that play before the main menu. DVD Stripper could never take them out and leave a working DVD, and I'm starting to understand why. There are menus that don't have any actual content besides commands to keep the disc working. The main, audio, scene, and extras menus are all in different titlesets, and of those titlesets, the ones that actually have video have the previews that play at the beginning of the discs (each in a different VTS of course). The menu to play those previews, on the other hand, is in the same titleset as one of the episodes of the show. When I'm done with this either I'll know a lot more than I do now or my head will explode. Fortunately, despite all the weirdness, Remake can still do an amazing job without some things that are apparently put there specifically so you can't remove them and keep a working disc. Now I just need to dig into the code that makes everything so messed up and fix it.

Oh, and Doc, don't make The Matrix your first project. It's not really difficult, but it's not as basic as some of the others. One of my next projects will be figuring out how to do it the way I want instead of the half-assed version I did a yesterday. It uses ILVU, which is a little trickier than multi-angle just because you have to figure out which version to keep, but just as easy to get rid of (right click - select Hide Blocks).

Edit: Never mind. It looks like you're up for the challenge. Let us know how it goes.

I tried to strip angles while editing DareDevil and each time I received a runtime error. That doesn't mean that everyone will and I would like to hear how it worked with you. Its only after a while that I tried hide all blocks and that worked.

I'll certainly let you know when I get there. I'll probably use the last couple of Disney movies I need to backup for testing multi-angle removal. I was planning to buy Daredevil eventually anyway so if I don't have problems with the Disney stuff I'll try my hand at that. I should probably start looking for a used copy before they disappear completely from the video stores.

I've only tried only one Disney film, The Haunted Mansion, and since hiding blocks seems to work I did't try the strip angles feature. DareDevil may have had too many angles for the funtion to work.

I just realized that the problems I was having with Farscape may have just been because I only did a Test Export and not a full one. I started over and tried a Test Export without removing anything and it's just the same as it was after I removed everything. I'm doing a full export right now to see what happens. If I ever find the guy who came up with the structure on these DVDs I'm going to make him do a backup for me with nothing but DVD Decrypter and a hex editor. 8D

Wouldn't that just incite him to make the structure even more difficult to backup. The last time I checked most people in the movie industry were less than enthusiastic about our interests in backing up movies. LOL

Maybe, but I'll make him do it anyway. They can only do so much while still staying standards compliant, and it's too late to stop us from figuring out how the code works. And more to the point, I'd get some satisfaction out of it. Supposedly that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger, but I don't remember anything about not being allowed to get revenge afterwards. 8D

Success! Not only did Remake make a working DVD, but I didn't have to use any of the advanced features to do it, although I was glad to have them so I could see what a $#%@ed up mess the disc is. And no, I hadn't considered hyenas, but I'll add them to the list right after badgers and wolverines. 8D
