to add to my questions, how does the flip top and swap magic disks or any alternative to it relate to dvd movies. does that make the ps2 region free?

Afaik, the swap magic discs don't make the 'dvd' portion of the ps2 region-free. I use dvd-shrink for all my 'dvd' backups since most of the newer movies are well over the 4.7gb limit of a dvd-r. And dvd-shrink will allow you to make your 'backup' of your dvd region-free.
ps2 v7 with matrix infinity and 160gb hdd
pioneer a05 dvd-rw
Nero Burning Rom
Windows XP Pro
psp with 3.40oe-a custom firmware
Gamecube with SD Media launcher, SD Gecko, and Action Replay.

Just thought I would add a little info here FYI. CD Backups or DVD rips to CD need to be under 632mb to work with the flip top swap magic method. This does not apply if you use a mod chip. The reason is that the swap magic and gameshark disc(ver 1.9+) have a TOC of 632mb. When the PS2 reads these discs it is aware that they have a TOC of a certain size. If you put in a larger game disc, the PS2 will not be able to read the info past 632mb. This is why games at >632mb can fail at some point or not even load. Now that being said, I have been able to play some games above 632mb, I think it just depends on what info is past the 632mb barrier. This does not apply to mod chips, since you hit eject and the PS2 reads the TOC of the backup. I assume this applies to DVD's as well but I have not tried to back up games larger than the the swap magic DVD TOC.

Keep in mind that BIN image files are always larger than the data they contain. If you look at the actual size of the CD, it is probably a lot smaller.

first off, NO 'swapping' of ps2 games! That's a big no-no according to the rules. Second, unless you want spam comin out your ears, I highly recommend that you don't put your e-mail address in your posts...

Hello, I have a version 4 PS2 and have a Modchip, but I can't seem to get Vice City to load up. I bought the chip about 2 years ago. I have been using Gameshark 2 to play my CD-R backups and I'm new at this DVD-R backups since I just bought one. Is their a difference between a DVD-R and a CD-R backup or do I need the Magic CD instead of Gameshark or do I need a FlipTop or a Newer Modchip? Lol: allot of questions. Thank's in Advaced!

Soulja: Gameshark V2 or V3 will not work for backing up games on a v7 ps2 and you will therefore have to use the swap magic in order to boot your backups.
djesusjay: There is a big difference between DVDR backups and cd-r backups. For one thing cd-r have a max capacity of 72mb where DVDR can hold up to 4.35GB (For dvd-9 about 9GB.) Basically what I am say is that the DVD games are better. Anyway all ps2 Versions read dvd-r... however V1-3 only read DVD-R, Some version 4's read dvd+r and some don't, Version 5 and up read both DVD+R and DVD-R. With a version 4, if you don't already have a dvd burner I would get a dvd-r burner just to be on the safe side.
With a fliptop cover the best thing to do is get the Swap Magic. You could use the Gameshark but it can't be a version 3 it would have to be version 1 or 2. Also in order to boot dvdr backups with the Gameshark you would have to do a pain in the butt procedure which involves swapping an original high TOC game. With the Swap Magic all you have to do is load the cd or dvd bootdisk and simply swap it with your backup.
As far as wether to get a newer modchip or a fliptop... It's a matter of opinion. A fliptop is cheaper and easier where a modchip is more powerful. I personally like the fliptop but if I get enough money I might buy a pre-modded ps2.
-Cheers
