If you're having a problem with Cog-Swap, STOP!!! There is a way to boot DVD backups with CD Loader. It's found here: MasterChu's guide to loading DVD backups with CD Loader: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/320910 Only problem is that I'm not sure if this will work for the fat PlayStation 2, as this is only described for the slim PlayStation 2. This should work. Haven't tried it yet as I have no DVD backups, but is should work.
My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

Quote: How are you physically swapping?
I'm trying to swap a PSX backup this way:
1. Boot CD Loader
2. Press Triangle to retract the laser(have CD Loader on a CD-R)
3. Change CD Loader for an original PSX game
4. Swap with backup
Thing is, I'm not sure if TOC has a factor in swapping a PSX game. I tried to boot a backup of V-Rally 2 using the original V-Rally 2(dumb thing to do as the TOC is exactly the same), and it got stuck on the galaxy screen again. Now, I want to boot V-Rally Championship Edition(PAL game), which has a smaller TOC than V-Rally 2. Can CD Loader force video mode like Swap Magic? I actually found the answer, which is yes, but not for everything. I was able to force Sega Rally Championship and Colin McRae Rally 3 to show in PAL mode. It worked for Gran Turismo 3 and 4, but at a certain point, the games switched their modes back to NTSC.
Forgot to ask, is it possible to load a PSX backup with the new version that comes in a cardboard box on the slim(SCPH-75001) with a USB pendrive? Also, I was thinking of getting a USB hard drive, so can I boot HD Loader(fully patched ELF found in the link for Cog-Swap) to boot backups that are put in the hard drive? And how do I put a backup on a hard drive from a CD, DVD, or another computer's hard drive? One more thing, can the patched HD Loader be formated to boot directly from MAX Media Center, and will this work for a slim?

Guys, MasterChu told me a solution to that problem with that galaxy background. CD Loader MUST be run from a USB Pendrive. Know why? When you do the swap with Cog-Swap(or a PSX backup) using a CD-R, the PlayStation 2 looks for CDLOADER.elf, which has been removed, and refuses to boot whatever was put inside.

This aint true man, once cdloader.elf is loaded, it's self-sustaining, doesn't need any further access to the original file... If that was the case, no one would have got it to work - i don't know what the answer is to the question of the frozen galaxy screen, but i'm 99% sure it's not that.

i'm having the same problem as ace. ive got a v9 fat ps2 scph-50004.
i've used the none installer version cd that would boot cogswap as the loader, like explained in the 1st post. everything goes fine i load cdloader, pres eject and insert a valid ps2cd then do the swap trick using slide card and press X to continue but then i get stuck at the same galaxy screen with a red or is it pink border around that galaxy picture. in other words cog swap doesn't load and the cd just keeps spinning
i've tried putting cogswap on the pen drive and booting it like that but that didn't work so then tried the installer cd, i got it to boot and it did actually copy everything to the memory card, however when i insert the playstation 1 disk ive gotten the id from it just stays stuck at a black screen, nothing happens, cogswap / keylauncher doesn't load. whats wrong here ?
in the last attempt i made one more cd with keylauncher as the menu and putting cogswap as an extra elf file. with this cd i've gotten into the keylauncher but the weird thing is that cogswap loader didn't show up in the menu's , it was empty
any help ? i've messed up around 4-5 cd's already and i'm all burning them at 4x speed
update
IT WORKS NOW :D
well i created one more installer cd but without keylauncher and it works fine now cogswaploader loads directly pretty weird that i couldn't get the other things to run or the slim line method.
Also when i get my first dvd backup i'll checkout that system on booting dvd's with cdloader and let u guys know if it works on a fat ps2

What is a TOC?
And another thing, how to swap disks on a slimline ps2.
http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm Voids your warranty, but if you don't want to open your ps2 then just do
it over the hole. But then you can only open the lid a inch unless you're not swapping. And, YOU CAN PRESS THE EJECT BUTTON AND THIS WILL STILL WORK!!!!!

First off, I wanna say, Jjax, you are a god. This works perfectly. The only thing I gotta say, is that I too was a victim of the "Red Galaxy of Doom"TM on a Version 4 Fat Ps2. Ran Cdloader just fine, but my install disk wouldn't work. Would just sit there and spin at the "Red Galaxy of Doom"TM. Well I wasn't using Nero, I was using a free proggie called MagicIso I think. So I downloaded the demo version of Nero, loaded up the Iso to be burned, set my speed at 4x, and burned it. Popped it into Cdloader and bam, instant satisfaction. Loaded up Cogswap with my trigger disk (installed on memory card,) put in my copy of Dragon Quest 8 (has a very nice TOC btw if you have it, works great,) swapped it for my japanese copy of Final Fantasy 12, and bam! The most beautiful game I've ever seen up on the screen. Once again, Jjax thank you for this amazing guide, you rock dude. Also Purity and Ace_2, you guys rock too for stickin with it so long! <3
PCLOADLETTER!? What the **** does that mean!?

Thanks Kanaarei!!! - glad you got there in the end - pity some of the other guys here are still getting stuck with the galaxy screen on their slimline ps2s... i'm not the best one for recommending methods for swapping the discs on slimline ps2s... cdloader should still work the same if the swapping goes well though - worked for me on a friend's slimline ps2!
Nero Burner is the best for burning in my opinion! ;-)
Peace.

Hey!
In your guide you say that you can load the Cogswap loader using a pendrive, if you have the older version of Action Replay Max. I have the older version (it came in a purple dvd case) however i cant find the media player! Is there any other way to load Cogswap on an Action Replay Max.
BTW I have a V4 PS2

Anubisl13 - if it says it's installed on the MC, you've done everything right! - all you need to do is boot up your PS2 and put in your chosen PS1 trigger disc!... the launcher screen should show up and you load cogswap from there.
Prateek51 - I discovered recently there is a version even older than the "older" version of ARMAX i mentioned in this guide - unfortunately that version, without the media player, cannot install the MC exploit by this method. There is a more complex but equally successful way of installing the files that requires uploading files you've created on PC to your MC through your pendrive. I may write a guide for this in the future.

Well, first off, this worked FLAWLESSLY for my old, chubby PS2. However, the laser on it died out so I had to get a new one. I decided to get a fancy new slimline PS2. However, I tried your instructions for the slimline and I ended up having the same problem as Ace. I CAN boot up CDloader, and swap for the cogswap CD no problem, but once I press X to load it up it just gives me the red galaxy screen and crashes. I tried the same thing with a few other CDs, my SNES-Station CD...PGEN...but nothing worked. The SNES-Station CD SEEMED to boot up, it got past the galaxy screen, but then the screen just went black and stayed black. My Action Replay didn't come with a pendrive, so there's nothing I can do in that department. Am I outta luck? I don't really want to shell out 50 bucks Canadian for a copy of Swap Magic, seeing as how I already spent like 30 on the Action Replay. Any help would be awesome! Thanks in advance.

Monke320-
Try using an alternative program. DVDLoader works great!
Also, if you kept the memory card from your old PS2 then you have to remove the exploit.
And if you're that desperate to play your backups, use USB Advance, though I've heard it's slow.

I want to boot a PAL game with CD Loader(using the DVD boot method), and I'd like to know what mode is need to boot a PAL game in NTSC mode. Do I keep the screen in color with PAL at the top-left corner of the screen, or do I press Square to change the screen to black & white with NTSC on the top-left corner(I think this is used if you want to boot an NTSC game in PAL mode, because I booted two games in that mode and the screen was black & white with the screen cut off at the top)?

Today, I found a version of Action Replay MAX that says 2003 in the back of the box. Will Cog-Swap load off the USB memory stick with this version?
