I think I'm just going tape the switch down since I've decided that a year long warranty probably isn't good for very much anyway.
Yes that sucks.... mine came in bubble wrap also. But they are very good with returns where I bought mine.
Would they not exchange that part#3 for you?
They probably could, but after reading about the problems people are having even with non-flattened pieces, I think I might rather just open up the PS2 and tape the switch down. it would probably be easier than dealing with the piece possibly popping out or getting misaligned over time.

Okay, I have a bit of a different problem.
I got my Magic Key II ver. 3.8 or whatever for the PS2thin, and I have all the 3 small chips inserted correctly [in reference to the guide on the website with the disc being able to spin while it's open and whatnot].
I have a US region PS2, so for the Magic 3 Swapdiscs I also got US region because I assumed it was made for that region model.
I can't get the PS2 to read the games, however. It always says "insert ps2 disc" at the swapdisc screen. ;X Should I have gotten the Japanese region swapdiscs? DX

Well first I would check your version number to see what unit of PS2 you have.
http://www.modchip.com/ps2/ps2id.htm
If its US PS2 then you are fine with US region swap magic as it should be.
The problem probably is with the backups and how they are compiled or burned.
I can play PAL or NTSC on my US version slim 14.
How many games have you tried?

Just wanted to pop in and say that I was able to easily install a set of Magic Keys II into my PS2 slim version 15. It was a piece of cake to install the keys without the aid of extraneous tools except for a pair of tweezers, and I only needed them to peel the cover off the double-sided tape so that piece number 3 would stick. Took about two minutes max to do the entire procedure.
I honestly have no idea what everyone's complaining about.

I love to read about how everyone has had such an easy time installing the LAST piece of the MK's ...
The way it was described was that it was going to be a piece of cake..but honestly, I had A LOT of trouble with the last piece..
The only reason why I can think that so many people have problems with it is, while they may manufacture all the pieces to be the same size..Things tend to happen while they are getting shipped..
You have a very small piece of aluminum and it can and will get bent.
(my problem)
Bending it to a new position doesn't take that much force...however, when you take into account that the size of the switch is about the size of this asterisk * you see that placement is everything.
I spent about 3 hours trying to get this piece to actually press the switch before finally opening up my PS2 and taping the bugger down...
I would recommend that to everyone.
If you absolutely cant seem to get the switch pressed down on the first couple of tries....don't kill yourself over it...
Just open up the case.
It'll save you a headache which was most likely caused by someone else.

That makes a lot of sense. My only problem with this thread was that after reading it, I was under the impression that people were having trouble with installation because of a fundamental problem in the design of the Magic Keys. If it was the fault of improper packaging from the online store where the keys were purchased, then it has nothing to do with the manufacturer (unless you bought the keys directly from them).
So, Magic Keys themselves: no problem to install.
Magic Keys that have been warped in the mail: where all the gripes in this thread are coming from.

No the disc won't spin while you change it. Swap magic loads, comes up with a screen saying " NORMAL....SPECIAL....BOOT "
You then choose one, change your disc and hit X

The bottom picture is what you will want. It is the magic keys II
The top picture is the older set of magic keys as the 3rd tool you can see is bigger.
For the slim versions you will need the 3rd tool with the slim leg as in bottom picture.
Just check the same spot on your PS2. Mine is V14 Slim.
I ordered mine from modchip.ca (modchip.com for US) cause I am in Canada along with the Swap Magic 3.8 coder. Its a combo set.
You tell them what version PS2 when you are ordering them.

I recently purchased a slim ps2 with disc read error and bought swap magic 3.8 coder with magic keys 2. After reading this thread I attempted to install tool 3 for bout a minute but since I had to open the ps2 to replace laser I taped down the 3rd sensor. So I didn't spend too much time on the magic keys installation. Just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. It helped me out a lot.

One question, everyone who uses swap magic with a slim ps2 has anyone installed the laser fix? if so what version was your ps2. I have a v12 and a newly purchased laser and I don't want to burn it up after 1 or 2 hours of gameplay. Its required to install with a mod chip but I figured I should install it since Im playing burned media, weather or not I have a mod chip. Can anyone explain their experiences with and without the slim ps2 laser fix. Thanks in advance

But why does it say(on the picture) that the ones with the thin leg should come into the white slim ps2 and the ones with the big leg into the black one?

The Ceramic white one probably did not have the metal thing that sort of blocks where the 3rd tool fits in. Mine is a Black PS2 75001
I used the one with the slim leg. It is a very tiny hole that you need to put it through.
Check here you will see it is for all V12-V15

I got the piece in place- I know because the disc will spin- but I can't close the lid. Did I do something wrong?

A few people have had that problem. They get the 3rd tool in and it works but lid won't close. I wouldnt say you did something wrong, cause maybe your 3rd tool is off a bit, I am not sure and hate to speculate.
The makers of this tool say the lid should close. Mine closes fine.
I hate to tell you what to do or to mess with it more to make the lid close. I guess it is up to you if your happy the way it is then good, if not then try again.

I received my Magic Keys 2 yesterday, and I haven't been able to position it right yet. Sometimes I get it in the right position, so the disc start spinning, but then the flat part with the tape isn't positioned right, so it sticks up.
After reading this thread it seems that the simplest thing is to just open the case and use tape. Is it difficult to locate the right switch and is it difficult to dis-/reassemble the case and the content? What tools are needed and where can I find a description of how to go about? I don't even now where the screws that keep the casing together are located.

Here is a guide on how to take apart a PS2.
Ps2_Repair_Guide.pdf
I have taken apart many a time and is not so hard to follow directions. Just take your time to be careful.
And here you can see near bottom of page where he sticks the tape.

Don't even bother attempting to put that 3rd piece in. Getting the piece to fit into that tiny hole was pretty troublesome, and while the lid CAN be closed with the piece installed, you have to put quite a bit of pressure and I don't enjoy treating my ps2 so abruptly.
Anyways, I never managed to make the piece press down the goddamn sensor at all, I had to open my ps2 and tape it down manually, but once I did, I stopped getting the "not a valid ps2 game" message and got my import working inmediately.
My recommendation: if the warranty on your ps2 is expired (like mine), open your ps2 and tape down the sensor. It's not difficult or risky AT ALL, but just don't be stupid because while it's possible to rip a cable or scratch the lens in the process, you'd have to be REALLY stupid for that. But if you are really (REALLY)interested in preserving Sony's shitty warranty, fiddle with that 3rd piece until you manage to get it working, if that's possible of course.
Click here to see what you have to do in order to tape down that sensor:

How do you open the slim ps2 without breaking the warranty? I got five of the screws out, but I can't get the lid off well enough to see where to put the tape....

Basically you don't open the PS2 without breaking the warranty.
You have to use a knife to cut the warranty tape that is covering the seam.
Well I read some more and found this for those who wish to keep their sticker in tact and open the Ps2
