I'm sorry to bombard you all with this bitterly common questio, but I cannot find my answers anywhere. I just downloaded DVD Shrink, and ANYdvd. The laptop I am on is new. I have only had it for a few months. The programs that came with this PC (that may be relevant) is Cyberlink Power2Go, Cyberlink Suite, Muvee, and HP Mediasmart. It says that I would need NERO to burn when using DVD shrink. Is this true, or can I use Cyberlink? I do not have nor want Nero.
Its been 4 years since I have ripped DVDs and I have forgotten which are the best programs, but I was using XP back then and I have Vista Pro now. Any suggestions or helpful hints or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

help. I'm new here too. I am trying to nail down a good procedure to backup movies on DVD. I have learned that I need to decrypt, shrink and burn the file.
In that regard, I did the following:
1.downloaded and installed the latest version of Imgburn.
2.downloaded and installed shrinkdvd.
3.tried to follow this thread and tried to modify shrink so that it runs imgburn automatically.
I downloaded the zip program but have not gotten past that.
So, I need a little help finishing this setup. And also, I would like to verify that I am doing this right. What software do I need to make backup copies of the movies on DVD? How do I run it? thanks. so very much.

Make sure you have ImgBurn installed before you install DVD Shrink.. Un-zip the file you downloaded and replace the DVD Shrink .exe file in the DVD Shrink Program Files directory with the one you'll find in the DVD_Shrink_wImgBurn Feature folder...
Next time you open Shrink, you'll find the option to burn with ImgBurn available.

FYI, sounds like your laptop came with the same programs as mine.. All are VERY ignorable.. And I agree, no need or reason to have Nero if you don't want it (I don't). You can't get any better than AnyDVD.. If you're still on the free trial, you probably want to take advantage of the 20% discount Slysoft is offering right now..
Make sure AnyDVD is running with your original DVD, set it to show the status window when it completes scanning.. Check to see if it mentions removing "Structural Protection"... If it doesn't, just go ahead and open your disc directly with DVD Shrink and and you're off (your choice, full disc, re-edit, etc).. And you should be set to auto-burn with ImgBurn if you've replaced the .exe file as I mentioned above..
If AnyDVD finds "Structural Protection" and removes it, the folks at Slysoft recommend using the built-in AnyDVD ripper first. Right-click on the red fox icon in your system tray and select "Rip Video DVD to Harddisk..." Pick a location for your file that's easy to find (I usually just put on the desktop) and let AnyDVD rip.. When's its completed, go to Shrink and have it open files (point it to the folder AnyDVD created) instead of opening disc.. from there, everything else is the same.. Just remember to delete the folder after your DVD is backed up or you'll run out of HDD space very very quickly (that's why I send to the desktop.. the folder stares me in the face so I don't forget to delete)..
Pretty much all there is to it.. Very simple and so far for me (been doing this for about a year or so) works great..
And fyi to both Kudro & eterry2,
I'm running Vista Ultimate Svc Pack 2... Never had a problem running anything on Vista yet and have had installed since first day of release 2.5 years ago.

Very easy...
Just download from the link that attar posted earlier in this thread... Unzip, run the install, then go to the Shrink program folder and replace the .exe with the one from the zip file..
Just make sure you already have the newest version of ImgBurn installed before you install Shrink or it won't see the program.

If you followed the steps, after you've either opened "Disc" or "Files" in DVD Shrink, then select "Backup".
In the box that opens on the first tab, you'll see a drop-down under "Select Backup Target".. Under the section "Create ISO Image File", you should see "ISO Image File and burn with ImgBurn".. Select this and you're good to go to auto-burn after Shrink is finished... It will automatically open ImgBurn and you'll just need to select the settings you want (if you haven't done so previously), put a blank disc (preferably Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden) and you're good to go...

Thank you. I got it now. So, I have DVDshrink with Imgburn. I also have dvddecrypter.
Could you tell how to use them. I don't need an entire user manual. Just the basics.
Thanks.

Wow, it worked. Thank you so much. I had to play around with it a bit. But I read the GREAT GUIDE on this site and did it step by step. dvdshrink would ab-end with errors and I read I read a note to download freedvd and use that to decrypt. So, I ran freedvd and THEN dvdshrink and then it used imgburn. I got it all done. Too many steps. but the movie plays from the new dvd. thank you.

there are other tuts here where you use dvdfab hd decrypter along with other such software to backup later model dvd's with newer encryption which dvd shrink can't do etc the only hassle is you have to use more than 1 app to get the job done..lol..

so, is there one decrypter that I should try first..that works most often? and is free? what would you suggest I start with? How many of these decrypters should I have installed and waiting in the wings? I guess what I am asking is out of the free decrypters, what order do you run them to get one to work?

Can't say i'm more into dvdfab & slysoft products as they're bought packages,i tend to use fab the most, the tuts however the mentioned earlier have all the info you need,by the way the guy that made dvd shrink now works for nero so nero recode is in a way an updated version of shrink.

Check HERE for ripping options.
As far as an answer to how many of these proggies should one have? I've always been of the belief that multiple tools can be very handy. If you run into a snag with one proggie, try another.
Typically, i rip with DvdFab6 and process from there. If i have trouble, i use AnyDVD in ripper mode with devices set to slow and quiet.

umm.. ok, im probably going to sound like a complete ibecile asking this but I could no find DVDShrink.exe nor could I find DVD_Shrink_wImgBurn feature or folder.. I went into Program Files and opened DVD Shrink folder, but didnt find much besides Images, Language and such. I don't know. I guess I am completely lost. What is the point of ImgBurn anyway?

Ok, lets see if I can make this ultra-simple..
1st, the point of ImgBurn is that its the program you're going to use to burn your DVD with.. No burning program, no DVD.
2nd, when you UNZIP the DVD Shrink file that you downloaded, you will have a "Read Me First" text file (suggest you do read), the DVD Shrink setup file and a FOLDER: "DVD_Shrink_w ImgBurn Feature". Inside this folder is the DVD Shrink 3.2.exe file you will use to overwrite the one in the DVD Shrink "Program Files" folder..
The only way I could make this any simpler it to install it on your PC myself... Of course if you haven't downloaded the correct version of DVD Shrink from the link that attar posted at the top of this thread, then you're not going to have the files you need.
