Hello

Question: Am using Nero 6.6.0.13, It came with the system. I only use it for copying entire Cd's or Audio talks to a cd, I don't use it for anything else. Should I upgrade to Nero 9, sometimes when am having problems burning a CD ( like am burning an entire cd or copying an entire cd), it will get to 98% and stall), the system will come back with an error and said I need to upgrade. Since the only thing I do is burn audio talks, (not music). Do I need to upgrade, will there be less of these problems mention above, this program seems to give me more problems it be giving me problems lately or could it be my system. Computer has been in the shop Twice within the last Six months, to clear up this problem and some other issues. Am stressed. help anybody!! I can't find the serial number even I wanted to upgrade, I found it once, but can't seem to find it again!!!......

For your uses you should stick with 6.6.0.13. After using Nero myself since Victorian times i am still stubbornly sticking with 6.6.0.18, no need whatsoever for me to change.

Anyways, i am sure with the odd logfile from you we could get you up and running correctly without too much hassle, but given what you use Nero for, don't waste a bean on anything newer. There are free alternatives too but as i say, for your uses we can get you sorted if you give us some more info.

For a start, let's have the latest burn log from the logfile which should be here ~ C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.txt

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

Hi

Thanks for answering! but can you tell me how to go about getting: C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.txt. I can work the computer but am not an expert! If you can tell me how to go about getting the information I can do it. Of course you would need to explain in baby terms,or for "dummies"

Thanks
PS: Nero will not burn all my talks or copy all CD, it will get to a point on some cd's and stall at "maybe 98%, then sometimes it will copy the entire cd with no problems, same cd. I burn all cd @ the lowers speed.

Thanks for the logfile. It was the entire contents of the logfile so i've edited out your Nero serial number so nobody can pinch it and i've left just 2 burn entres in place, a successful one followed by a failed one.
Will start going thru the entries and post back my results...

(Whenever you dig around in the logfile, you can differentiate burn log entries within the logfile via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======")

edit- i've been thru the logfile, here's my recommendations ~

Quote:
CdRomPeripheral : AOPEN COM5232/AAH PRO atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
'DMA' needs re-enabling for the burner. Try this simple method for re-enabling DMA ~ http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/ - if that doesn't work ie it doesn't end up saying 'DMA if available' in the Transfer Mode dropdown box, you might have to do this on the Secondary IDE Controller as well, and to both devices on each of them. *Basically you need to do this to the device that shows 'PIO Mode' as the Current Transfer mode.
DMA not being enable means all other devices such as hard drives and other cd/dvd drives will run at the speed of the lowest performing device which in this case is the Aopen burner.

Quote:
Recorder: <AOPEN COM5232/AAH PRO> Version: 1.04
According to here ~ http://www.firmwarehq.com/Aopen/COM5232%252FAAH%2BPro/files.html the latest 'firmware' for this burner is 1.08 dated May 2005. Your burner is using 1.04 dated October 2004. Firmware is basically what teaches a burner how to recognise various blank media and various burn speeds that they can use. Further down my reply there's an error message than confirms that the particular blank discs you were using for that burn were unknown by the burner's firmware so it wouldn't have had enough info re the blank disc so the next thing to do is to update the firmware. I can see this particular firmware is supplied as an 'exe' file so you just have to run it and follow the instructions.

Quote:
===== Disc-Copy over image - 1st step : Copy to image ...

Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

Creating Image completed successfully

===== Disc-Copy over image - 2nd step : Burn the image ...
I've quoted these lines as the 1st step seemed to work ok ie the copying of the source disc states it was successful, even though it gave a 'Medium error' ie it was having a moan re the source disc. I'm guessing the source disc is also a copied disc, but as i say it seems to have copied the source data ok.

Quote:

Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: Unknown. Medium required by compilation: CD-R/RW.)

This state that the burner didn't recognise the blank disc you wanted to burn with. This is due to the burner's firmware being out of date ie being unable to recognise this particular blank disc. Updating the firmware as i advised further up my reply should hopefully resolve this

Quote:
Burn process completed successfully at 4x (600 KB/s)
This states the burn was allegedly ok so i guess the blank disc used, whilst unrecognised by the burner's firmware, was burnt generically.

Thank you so much for your help. I did read the information and did try and follow the steps, the IDE seems like it was set correct. It became stressful, so I had to stop.

Thanks Again

No problem. Have another go at some of the recommendations when you're ready. I or someone else will no doubt be here when you're ready

Hello

Okk', I pull myself back together and follow steps above and download firmware. I tired to burn or copy a cd that I have copy before on Nero, but this time, instead of stalling at 98%, it's stalled @ 75%...................What else do you think it could be?

Let's have another section of logfile, the last one preferably. See this quote of mine showing how to select just one section ~

'DMA' needs re-enabling for the Samsung, though that's not what's causing the main failures. You can re-enable DMA as previously posted further up the page

Excellent, i see you successfully updated the firmware to version 1.08

Despite the firmware being up to date this is still stating that the burner didn't recognise the blank disc you wanted to burn with.

The only thing i can think of is that you need to buy different blank cd's, that will hopefully be correctly recognised by the burner thus eridicating your problems. Updating Nero (or using another program) won't resolve this as it's the burner not correctly recognising the discs that is at fault.

The only other alternative would be to buy a new CD or DVD burner (as it would have current firmware hence it should have no problem with most blank discs on the market), however that's a bit more expensive than a new set of blank CD's, and for the uses you've described it wouldn't really be a sensible use of your money... (well maybe, maybe not, it's your money after all and your uses may change in time).

I think part of the problem here, judging from the logfiles anyway, is that you're sometimes copying from a disc you've copied yourself with the same method above ??. If so that is making matters worse and would describe the errors from the source copy process ie "===== Disc-Copy over image - 1st step : Copy to image ...". If you are trying to recopy some of the discs you created yourself then that would explain the errors in some of the log entries in the 1st step, ie as the blank discs aren't being recognised correctly they're not burning correctly hence if you try to re-copy from them it won't work...
