Trying to figure out what I should have or not have and new to this.

Bought a burner and it came with Nero essentials software.
I used EZ VHS Converter and its software to transfer some old VHS tapes to my PC. It saved these as MPEG files and no problem playing on my PC with windows media player.

Then used the Nero software to burn DVD?s. Everything worked out fine excepted Nero changed the format I had the videos saved to my PC from MPEG to something called ?movie clip?

I did not like the idea that it changed the format without warning or asking but at the time no big deal.
Now 30 days later I find that I cannot play the copies of videos saved on my PC because it said I need to upgrade and pay like $50.00. And since it changed the format cant use windows media player. Can hear audio but not see the video.

What would you do? Upgrade? I guess I will have to if I want to recover the videos I have saved not on DVD since it seems only Nero can read them since it changed the format.
Also what if I ever wanted to send a short video to someone. If forced to save all videos in this Nero format, would the receiver have to have Nero also?

One day I will upgrade my video camera but right now have 8mm tape model and just use the EZ VHS Converter to transfer to my PC and don?t use it much. If I got a new camera would these come with software and a different format? What format is normal for video cameras.

Either way I want something very simple to use and will only do basic things like transferring video from a camera and burning DVD?s.

its like the original MPEG files was hijacked and changed to a file type now call "movie clip" that only nero can play.
Before installing nero all video files on my PC were listed as file type "MPEG".
Then after installing and using nero they all changed, and after 30 days I have no way to play them on my PC.
Also it would be nice to have the option of lets say copying a video file to a flash drive and then playing on another PC that does not have nero installed.
thanks, none of this makes since.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

If you wanted your video clips to play on all standalone DVD players Nero has to convert them to the video_ts standard, all software will do this unless you tell it not to.If you didn't want your clips converted to this standard you should have just made a data disk.

Also did just try to play a DVD, both one that I burned with Nero and one that was store bought. Both of these play fine on my regular DVD player with my TV.
Both now do not play with windows media player it said I do not have a ?Compabitable DVD mpeg-2 decoder? and I need this plug-in. I am even more confused now.
Am I checking the file type the right way?

Back to the video files on my pc. Beside the files listed there is an icon or small box that said MPEG in it as an icon, but if I right click and go to properties of that file it will say file type is called movie clip. Before Nero it had said MPEG.
It was Nero that said I needed a DVD multichannel plug-in or to upgrade.

Thanks again

It seems that the expiration of Nero broke the codecs it install (the decodes that play the video.) Nero OEMs generally include trials of patented codecs like MPEG-4 and it also seems MPEG-2 (The format DVDs are encoded in). Generally the operating system may have a codec to play MPEG-2 but this is generally Vista and up. One way to fix this is to install a codec pace, like K-Lite Codec Pack and it will give you a ton of codecs that will play almost anything out there. The only issue with this is it also includes the licenced codecs so if you don't mind that then it works wonderfully.

Nero has to convert the mp4 file because its not directly DVD compatible. DVDs use an older standard (MPEG-2 video) and Nero has to comply with this for your DVD to be playable.
