Nero 6 Video/sound sync problems

Hi All

I have Nero 6 and recently tried to burn an avi file after downloading with Rapid.
HOwever when I burnt the file to a blank DVD-R disc and played it in my TV/DVD combo unit, the sound and video are out of sync with the sound coming first by approx 4-5 seconds. The AVI file plays fine using Windows Media Player.

I've also noticed that I have to stop the DVD as the sound isn't playing smoothly with a wah wah effect occuring with the sound. Pausing helps but if I let it play for a long time the effect gets worse.

As I'm not a tech head I'd appreciate any advice that is easy to understand.

Also is there anywhere to get reliable independent advice about what the best video converter software is available. It seems nearly impossible to search for information without someone trying to sell something.
