I just installed smart start. I have a CD application data disk and wanted to Copy that disk to a DVD+RW disk which my drive supports. I get a message that it is the wrong type media. I also get this same message if I try to copy to a DVD-R. Can you only copy to the same type media?

Did you try to copy the CD to your HDD first and then transfer everything to DVD, or are you trying to do everything on the fly?

I was just following the screens of Nero Smart Start which tell you to insert the source disk. When I do that it then copies OK. Then it tells you to insert the blank disk. When I do that, it tells me the disk is the wrong type. My computer is a new HP with WIN 7 and has a Lightscribe16XMAXDVD+/-R/RW Super Multidrive that came with it. Since the source disk is obviously? a CD-R, I was wondering if I have to have a blank CD-R to do this copy. I would think I could copy to any media that the drive is capable of writing.

Thanks for any help.

Well, it should be, but if you do it the "right" way. What you're telling Nero to do is make a copy of your CD,replicate it, but then you feed it a blank DVD.

You should rip the CD to your hard drive, then copy the data to the DVD, not by using the "Copy CD" option.

I will certainly try the rip. But, the Nero routine for copy "apparently" copies it to the HDD first because when the source disk is inserted you can see the copy process proceding. When that is finished, it then instructs you to insert a blank disk. But, as I mentioned, it then says it is the wrong type.

As a side note - is there any possibility that the data (application in this case; Quickbooks, Excel) could have a copy protection routine that prohibits copying??

Thanks and I will let you know after I try this.

"the Nero routine for copy "apparently" copies it to the HDD first"

Not really, it stores the info in a temporary location until the disc is burned.

I really don't know about the encryption, I guess try and see.

hahaha.. it most certainly will have anti copy protection.. probably stronger than will be crackable by anybody less than a seriously skilled software security expert.

even if you manage to copy it there will be no point because it will not work (media checks to validate printed disk etc)
It will be easier to install it then make an image of it and list all the files it modifies and the registry entries it makes.. then back that up.. installing elsewhere or again would be a long and manual process.. but will work.

why you get the "wrong type" disk error is so glaringly obvious.. and has been kind of explained already.. I will elaborate..

when nero makes a copy of the disk (which it uses a temp directory on the hdd to do) it makes an iso image.. which is like a photograph of the disk.. it's one big file which can be mounted on a virtual drive and run just like any "real" cd .. you can't put that on a dvd unless you burn it as a data disk and add the iso file as just that.. a file of an image of a disk.. not trying to replicate the actual disk.

you get my drift? .. one way to test for copy protection is to rip an iso (easy.. look in the nero menu) and then mount the image file on the nero virtual drive (again look in the menu or instructions for nero) .. then it should run like the original (which it won't.. I know it won't because it's full of copy protection) if it's ok like that..

just to save you wasting disks..

Thanks for the lesson.
