no problem thought id offer, like i said i just got it setting on my desk shelf right now. im hoping around my b-day(august 21) i can start a new build and ill use it in there. maybe as a main drive then get a blu ray player to rip and then encode blu-ray with a nice new I7 2600K

I don't feel so bad now I use the 8X +R Sonys-have about 75 left. You're right not much worthy of a TY Sony now adays. I did enjoy "Lincoln Lawyer" last night-not so silly actually serious.

Yah, the LH20A1S/H's are good drives. I preferred them for ripping though. Sometimes I still use the Sata one for ripping. But mostly just scanning. My optiarcs (NEC chipped) seem to do a little better at burning. But I wouldn't hesitate to burn with it ;)

Zo... I think the LG BD drives seem to be getting the best reviews... I don't have one and prolly wont for a while... the media is just to expensive and it seems the longevity of the burns are questionable at present.. :) Good luck!!

The TY's scan very nice. As one would expect ;) I have no doubt that they'll last at least a couple decades. And by that point, Petabyte drives should be available to the consumer :D Even a petabyte drive could contain a great deal of BD discs. 40,000 if my math is correct.

If they're stored well, they should be fine. I have heard of some discs going tits up within 12 months though. Probably the optical quantum/philips discs! As well as ritek!

Oman7,

Let me get this right. You would risk losing up to 40,000 flics by putting them all on a single HDD? LOL!! No Thank You! I'll stick with my trusty WD Black ALLS 500GB single platter drives for now. They are Cool running, Quiet, Vibration free, fast and have far fewer moving parts than larger Multi platter drives. Plus it has a 5 year warranty! I use a Docking Station to play them. I can plug it into the USB port to play it on an HDTV. I number my drives from 1 up and have a Master list for my Flics, and a program that works it. It tells me Album 2, and I plug in the number 2 drive. Wait a few seconds for the drive to mount, and click OK! The Movie starts!

I couldn't handle that kind of loss if an even half full Peta-byte drive went belly up. The time it would take to restore or clone a replacement would be incredible! I'll pass! :0)

Best Regards,
Russ

If a petabyte drive is released to consumer market, it will mean that the rigorous testing they do will have been at least partially successful. And no. I would not trust all my data on a single drive. I'd have to have redundancies. I realize I do not at this time. It's a huge risk. But funds are a problem at the moment. I'm probably gonna ebay one of my 2tb drives, and purchase another 3tb soon. Once upon a time, there were 1.19Gb drives. I never fathomed 3tb drives. It was done. Petabyte drives are not so farfetched. It's only a matter of time :p They'll probably start calling them .1Pb, .25Pb, .5Pb, etc. A .1Pb drive is not far away at all. Guaranteed!

garmoon,

As far as I'm concerned, the ones that have both eSata and USB are the best. eSata is much faster, yet you can still hook up to someone's computer and copy or load things via the externals USB if they don't have eSata. Best of both worlds!

Russ

Russ Ive been wanting to add another internal HDD to mu Dell. Ive got two spaces for HDDs. But there are onlythree sata connectors and all three are on 1 HDD and 2 ODDs. Wheere do the other 2 come from. Can a SATA connection be split-that sounds wrong? My last Dell had enough spares. This is an expensive Dell dimension quad core. gary

GARmoonY I can't see the inside of ye computer but I"m guessing there should be some open SATA connections somewhere... only three (3) seems a bit short for a better built computer. ;) Anyway if there isn't more than the 3 then a cheapy PCI sata card should do the trick... of course Russ might have a different idea since he does more repair and add-ons than most of us even think about. :)

Good luck bud. ;)

@greensman

With a little searching and a pic from Dell who had others confused also, I found the other two SATA connectors. Two of the connectors are double stacked connectors and have latch data Sata cables. They used the top one of each one and thus hid the other two lurking below them (like two usb connections in tandem). The fifth one I used for my second ODD months ago cause it was easy to see-on the motherboard.

Thanks, gary

gary,
With Dell you never know. Do you have a model on your Dell? I've see a number of later model Dimensions that had only two sata ports with the ODD being IDE from the factory, so there is only one additional Sata port. We have a Dell Dimension 4700 at the office and it only has two Sata Ports. Let me know on what model yours is.

You could add a Sata controller card like this for about $20.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124047

That will give you a spare IDE as well. It's PCIe.

Russ

XPS 9100 has space for (internal) 3HDD and 2ODD. Just like my last except they are using 2 double SATA terminals on the MB. They just got cheap and didn't put the other 3 SATA connectors inthe pc ready for the add ons. I easily found the 3rd on the topp of MB next to the doubles being used. Yesterday opened it up and got my flashlight and pull the ODD SATA of( had latch clip)then I could feel and see the second female hole to plug into. I guess when I get another HDD will attach to the terminal under the first HDD. I do already have 2 IDEs empty but ready. Here's pick of a 9100 and same problem this dude couldn't find his extras.

garmoon,

It certainly looks like there are 4 Sata ports there, with 3 already connected.

My situation is there is an ODD where the blue is and an HDD where the black is. The 5th sata out of picture just in from the double sata connectors is a second ODD.Which leaves the hidden 2 open sockets under the blue and black ones. You can see the orange one this dude has plugged in under his blue. He has room under the black and the 5th on the MB.

I don't have any sales to report so I apologize for hijacking thread.
