(my version of nero is Ahead Nero 9.0.9.4b)
I've had this problem.
everywhere i looked i could not find a solution that worked.
Reinstall nero.
Reinstall drivers for disk controllers and other hardware.
etc...

problem persisted.
during the burn process or AVI encoding the error would occur.

i found the solution and thought i'd share it because i wasn't able to find it on the internet.

this solution is not for computer newbs.

1 - delete ALL nero directories from your PC.
this includes


n:\Program files\Nero

n:\Common Files\Nero

n:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Nero

this also includes any files that have to do with:
Nero Burning Rom
Nero BurningRights
Nero CoverDesigner
Nero DiskSpeed
Nero Drivespeed
Nero Express
Nero InfoTool
Nero PhotoSnap
Nero Recode
Nero RescueAgent
Nero ShowTime
Nero SoundTrax
Nero StartSmart
Nero Vision
Nero WaveEditor
NeroDiscCopyn.Gadget
and
Templates

2 - delete ALL entries in the registry that refer to Nero.
this includes:
Nero Burning Rom
Nero BurningRights
Nero CoverDesigner
Nero DiskSpeed
Nero Drivespeed
Nero Express
Nero InfoTool
Nero PhotoSnap
Nero Recode
Nero RescueAgent
Nero ShowTime
Nero SoundTrax
Nero StartSmart
Nero Vision
Nero WaveEditor
NeroDiscCopyn.Gadget
and
Templates

This also includes CLASS entries, Extension entries, and
all references to AdvrCntr4.dll

once this is done restart your computer and re-install nero.

Your Nero should now work perfectly.

The reason for the problem is not known.
The reason for the difficult solution is that both the
Nero uninstaller and the Nero Cleaner tool do NOT remove
the cause or completely uninstall Nero. Thus it will persist through re-installing
and upgrades.
