It hasn't been more reliable than my email and the site has often been inaccessible for brief moments which are not due to my end or connection as I can access other websites when it happens. AD is still having problems but definitely not as bad as it was prior to the recent upgrade.

Mr-Movies,

I'm in So Cal, about 55 miles NE of LA, and the biggest problem we have is these damn kids breaking into Verizon's temporary box, and disconnecting people's phone service, which knocks out the Internet. It's been a very long time since I had any problems with AD. I think my only complaints were about Intel and Motorola putting adds in front of the text, and moving up and down with it so you can't read it! ABP doesn't eliminate those.

I haven't seen one ad, since the last time we talked about Adblock plus. I installed it then. VERY nice program!

Fred, just how smooth does your AOL run, when connecting to ebay, paypal, etc?

Actually ABP does take care of those for me at least. I'm glad kids aren't getting into the pods for phone or broadband here in the mid-west but they could if they really wanted too.

I'm not saying I'm having tons of problems all the time but it still happens on occasion, it could be peek usage times but I recall it happening sometimes late at night where even people in Europe would be sleeping so I can't say it is always due to traffic.

Take care Russ,
Stevo :)

Considering the problem occurs on at least three separate ISPs, across all of my PCs, it's not an ISP problem. It's clear the downtime only affects some of the users, as the email notifications (which don't always work either) keep rolling in even during sustained periods where I can't access the site due to the HTTP 503 error.

Kev, lol, how can I explain in short, I don't think I can, ever since my new build, surfing on some things has been problematic, don't get me wrong, this thing is a rocket compared to that HP I had, but I'll give you some examples, whenever I start searching for movies e.g. I use daveproxy than I go to different sites especially searching for subtitles for movies cause my kids are deaf, I always used Fox and or IE8 for that, why? cause AOL is slower, when I was using my HP and of course slow as a hog but I didn't have pop-up problems, with my new build fast as hell but pop-ups all over the place, and fox is so messed up with them I just stopped using it altogether, and I tried the new version and old, no change.

So I just stick with IE8, I did try this ad block thingy you guys have suggested, works pretty nice for a moment than of course it stops with ads to buy it, here's the crazy part, I can switch to AOL doing all that and I get no pop-ups at all, go figure, I just don't like using AOL for that purpose cause it's a lot slower, maybe I'm suppose to configure things with IE or Fox, I don't know, it's just I don't understand why I never had this problem with my old PC, but problematic as hell with this new one.

And last, does anybody else besides me get a pop-ups on AD always covering the last post, especially on this thread, and you can't get rid of this thing, no close tab on it at all, annoying as hell.

If you like that be sure to take a look at Flashblock. I find it extremely handy on graphics-intensive sites and for opening multiple tabs in youtube. Basically it removes every flash-based object on the page and puts a "Play" button in its place. Everything still works fine, but you get to choose what loads. It helps speed up browsing for me and stop youtube videos from their damn "autoplaying", a major annoyance when wanting to view multiple video on multiple tabs in sequence.

I agree. The internet is so clogged with useless BS that you almost HAVE to filter it out to properly view a webpage. I think you and I are alike in that regard, that social networking and ads just make the internet more tedious, not more convenient.

I personally have a very "purist" attitude towards computing. Maximum performance and function. Simple, no clutter, no BS period. I don't even let programs run in the background when gaming. I refuse to chain myself to subscription services and IMO Facebook has ruined every single person I know, save my best friend who is also a proper "PC purist".

I also keep my OS drive cleaned out manually. No unneeded or leftover files allowed, period. As opposed to some I know who reformat weekly at the drop of a hat, I have been using the same Windows 7 format for over a year, and it is absolutely clean with 100% performance and function.

Some people take a "good enough" approach to computing. Like a particular friend who reformats his PC at least twice a month for "game performance" gains that don't exist. I'm so sick of people operating on false or assumed knowledge, without actually caring about the matter at hand. Botched driver install? Don't fix it, just reformat for the umpteenth time this year... makes me mad. People don't understand how things are meant to work, so they just make a wild guess. Yeah I suppose reformatting would fix your problem dude, though 5 minutes on Google could have done it better and more quickly...

I and a few rare others in this town are actual "computer nerds". Everyone else just figured out how to insert a PCI card into a slot so they must be experts... It's an uphill battle, in a largely rural community, to convince people that the Junkware links on their new HP desktop are not vital to the function of the system... Also trying to convince people that I'm not joking when I say that a format deletes everything on their HDD. Something recent:

Customer: The new Windows works great but where are my (insert program name here) documents?

Me: As previously explained, I would be wiping the drive completely and replacing your installation of Windows with a fresh copy

Customer: If you only fixed the windows then why are my documents gone?

Me: I told you they would be, several times. In fact, I went out of my way to make sure you knew that.

Customer: But you only replaced the windows, not my documents

Me: I told you exactly what would happen and asked if you needed anything backed up. You said no.

Customer: But I didn't know it would erase all my stuff

Me: Yes you did, I told you it would happen several times before I even started working on your machine. You gave me the go-ahead.

Customer: You're lying, I'm going to take my PC to Geeksquad so some REAL professionals can get my stuff back.

Me: ...

Even more off-putting is that members of my own family have pulled this BS on me. For the record, I wouldn't trust Geek Squad to format a flash drive let alone open my PC. Last incident was a particular conceited elder in my family refusing to listen to me about replacing a PSU. The old wattage argument rearing its ugly head. Well, the old ****er can go get ripped off by GeekSquad then. Last I heard they charged him ~$250 to install a generic 600W PSU that probably cost all of $30 and could barely boot the machine.

Flashblock sounds excellent, I'll have to look into that when i get home.

Sadly, there is no cure for abject stupidity. I doubt that's ever going to change.

I've tried flashblock before. I believe I was annoyed at how youtube was managed by it. I visit youtube often, for a laugh or a tutorial ;) Best thing since google :D

I may run it again though. Sometimes it's annoying how videos will auto load.

Thanks fred. My mothers new computer runs AOL VERY well. It's a windows 7 quad core machine, running 9.5. Which was designed for windows 7. Haven't seen any bugs yet. It's her old machine running XP that runs like a dog. There has to be a way to optimize it! I hate to recommend it, but I'm probably gonna suggest clearing all cookies, and footprints, and starting over. I'm also probably gonna stick an AGP card in it today. I have a feeling it will help in handling certain things better.

Pretty funny post there Jeff. Sad at the same time. I believe people get intimidated when speaking computer. And when one is intimidated, lack of self confidence, they're unable to think clearly. Anxiety. I know it all too well! I deal with it 24/7. Computers thankfully are one of the few things I'm confident with :p Socializing, forget it :(

Estuansis,

When I have to wipe a drive, I make the customer sign that he is aware that I may not be able to save their data, and that I am not responsible for any data loss! Please Note:Wiping a drive Removes Everything It saves a lot of time and effort, arguing with them later. I love the ones who say, sure they signed it but they didn't know that it meant that I could lose all my documents. I've always wondered what they thought "Removes Everything" means.

I installed ABP on my brothers computer today. He already likes it :) As well as the monitor I just rebuilt for him :D

Remember that cracked monitor that met up with a ceiling fan? I got a sweet deal on ebay for a replacement panel. It works almost perfectly! Only one stuck red pixel(fixable), and a tiny piece of dust behind the hard coat(much like a hand print on the other side of the mirror). They're very happy, and I got some of my debt with him dropped. It's been a good day indeed :) And I got to keep his 17" Dell flat panel. Not much, but I have dual monitors again LOL!

I believe the viewing angle is better on this 17" dell, than the Samsung I replaced. Not by much, but a little :p I believe I may be becoming a dell fanboy :S At least with their monitors.

I took apart the panel even further. It's rather interesting the way they're designed. A reflective paper, a thick piece of plexiglass(1/4" thick), semitransparent plastic sheet, and a rather intriguing sheet of something I'm not sure what it is. Obviously made up of plastic, but there are odd qualities about it. It also shares a reflective quality, but when bent like a wave, it appears much like something you'd see in a funhouse mirror room ;) My brother tried looking through it, and he looked awesomely distorted LOL!

I was unaware that when the LCD's were cracked, the color properties were within themselves. I thought it was when they received an electric current :S I now wonder if the replacement panel, with its stuck red pixel, is fixable. The red I saw, is identical to the red I'm seeing here. I now won't get my hopes up. It's almost like it's bleeding LOL! I scrapped the aluminum frame. Yah, I do that LOL! There's really not enough gold here to play with that stuff :( I can't see throwing stuff away, that can be salvaged. Waste not, want not :D

No more fan blades!

amazing at how thin the display really is isn't it. if i find a display to dark i remove one of those 3 filters. the sheet of you don't know what it is keeps the heat away from the lcd panel.

Yeah, it's all the CCFL backlighting that makes LCD monitors the size they are - hence the LED backlit versions being so much thinner (even though the panels are essentially the same inside)

What's funny is, people who read these posts will probably ask themselves, "Why didn't you google the design"? Well you know, the internet is a very useful tool. Period! But it will never have the benefit of Hands On Experience ;) You just can't beat that. And now it's completely committed to memory :p You just don't forget something like this LOL! I'll never look at LCD panels the same way, that's for sure.

Hot swappable my butt! I unplugged a drive, fine and good. But when I plugged in the power cable first, to the replacement drive, bluescreen! It's as though there was a power interrupt to either the OS drive, or another drive that had a process underway. Apparently this is not uncommon either. Have you ever attempted hot swapping Sam, Russ? You ever get a blue screen from attempting it? Keep in mind, the drive I was disconnecting had no current processes. I did not confuse windows. Or at least it shouldn't have. It was RIGHT when I connected the power cable to the replacement drive. My guess is an instability was introduced to one or more drives. Thought I had a good power supply. But perhaps most power supplies don't like the hot swap process?

Hot swapping without AHCI is a nono, and I often find it doesn't work. With AHCI on though, I don't usually have any issues, I hotswap drives dozens of times in a day sometimes.
