Yah, sometimes when I have my dock connected, I'll try and safely remove a drive, but windows is doing something with it in the background. And yet no user operations are going on. Not sure what it's doing, but I just remove it anyway.
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

Have you ever attempted hot swapping Sam, Russ? You ever get a blue screen from attempting it? Keep in mind, the drive I was disconnecting had no current processes. I did not confuse windows. Or at least it shouldn't have. It was RIGHT when I connected the power cable to the replacement drive. My guess is an instability was introduced to one or more drives. Thought I had a good power supply. But perhaps most power supplies don't like the hot swap process?
you have to plug them in perfectly, they'll do that if all the pins don't touch at the same time.

I'll probably try it again, when all my transfers are complete. I'm dumping two of my WD1001FALS drives, so that I can sell them :) I wish I could sell the third, but I'm currently using it for OS. I'm still not sure what I'm gonna do with the Velociraptor. I think there's only 1 reallocated sector, which is rather trivial. But I wonder if the controller is shoddy. I know the last one was. I'm pretty sure it had a dedicated Rail for power too.

Sam, your hotswapping involves the zalman PSU correct?
I find it interesting that I have a single rail, and you have 6.

Both Darkstar II and Voyager hot swap on a regular basis.
Voyager uses an 850W Zalman (4x18A + 2x28A). Darkstar II uses a 530W Nexus (1x41A)

Possibly. Although I hotswap drives routinely, I very rarely apply power live, they are being hotswapped externally using a dock, which is switched off until after the drive is attached.

YOu use a dock then. I'm talking about an internal swap.

Oman7,
I haven't had any difficulties with hot-swappable drives, and never had a blue screen from one.

Already got most of the storage I need thankfully, though this does put off a distant planned storage/backup upgrade. Possibly for the best.

Russ, do you usually plug the power in first, and then the data cable? Remember, I'm talking internal motherboard hot swapping. I've gotten device not recognized errors in the past, from not plugging the power in first. That's why I do it that way.

You probably created an arch when swapping the power. Always connect power to the drive before connecting the data cable. Molex power cables are the worst and have caused me the most problems.

I figured it wise to go with power first. You're probably right. An arc might have caused the problem that happened. Perhaps enough so to cause an amperage strain to the other drives.

You're never meant to hot-swap molex connectors, one because of the arcing potential, and two because it's possible for them to make contact up-side down if you don't get them the right way round when plugging them in!

The sata power cable is what I was plugging in, when bluescreen occurred. The data cable was not plugged in yet. Molex is not even in the equation :p The connector is at the end of the chain, if that means anything. It's a good thing hotswapping is something I seldom do without a dock :S

I just have an external adapter that converts SATA/PATA into eSATA and a SATA/Molex power adapter. Wire-tied together and both sitting up on my desk ready to go. CBA to remember the brandname as it's been worn off but it's generic. Pretty solidly built though, have been abusing it badly for years now. I really do need to get a powered USB hub to simplify moving my case. As it is I have most of the back ports full, not counting my 3 piece racing wheel and 3 piece flight stick setup :S It gets tangled easily.

I have one of those external adapters as well. I use it for a Lite-on BD-Rom drive. Dandy! It's connected to a usb sata adapter. Since I put a fan controller in my bay, I had to do it that way.

I used to use one of those external SATA->eSATA cables to my drives as well, but they picked up massive numbers of CRC errors so I gave up on it in the end. Now I use proper eSATA to hotswap docks, two of these in fact:

Have been meaning to get something like that, would certainly make it simpler. Just cba though given small number of drives I currently use. 9 now I think. Hardly worth investing in equipment over. And if anything needs to be transferred that badly I can always transfer through the network.

My thermaltake BlackX is awesome! I just wish I could get a decent eSATA cable :( I have too many dropouts with my current. Although it seems to be the connection point on the tower lately. Probably bent the damn thing.
Now i'd like a dock that supports 3Tb. They're probably currently expensive though!

Pretty sure the front port on the HAF doesn't work on my case (much like everything else on it). Having two rear ports is handy though, those haven't caused me any problems. Despite being of just as suspect quality as the HAF, the front ports on the NZXT Whisper seem to work fine.
