Congrats Kevin, nice work!

Russ, that explosion photo on the last page was interesting - so you came within 1.5" of finding out how dangerous life can be, to quote Steve? If it dented the metal like that - what would have been the effect on your head - implantation of CD substrate? LOL

Originally posted by Sam:

Amen to that. At least 50% of the info is buried in those threads, from my experience. Now that I think about it - correct me if I am wrong guys - google does not seem to bring up newegg reviews, which have been an incredible source of information for me. If not, I wonder why not?

Since everybody is now taking their monitors apart, meaning Sam with his brilliant fix of the 30" Dell, and Kevin just now bringing to life his first-ever laptop, here is a very interesting web page I came across yesterday researching on-screen sparkling.

He found the VSCAN controller, and adjusted the VSCAN voltage by turning the potentiometer 140 degrees counter-clockwise. You can read the short web page for more pictures and his adjusting procedure, which involved turning the set on and off as he changed the potentiometer. Kudos to him, and kudos to Sam and Kevin.

His voltage adjustment fix has held for 4 years since he first put up the web page. He has had almost 1/2 million hits on his site and he updated it last month, which was fortunate for me - it appeared #3 on the google search list.

Pretty impressive.

The reason I was searching, is that I just noticed some sparkling two nights ago, playing an old title in multiplayer mode.

I have never played the multiplayer version of COD World at War, the Treyarch title of a couple years ago. I got on it and I was amazed by the large maps, the overall very nice graphics, and I loved the WWII weapons. (You don't really have to level up very much to get a decent weapon. That's another reason I like the Vietnam map of BF:BC2, and also Counter Strike including the new Counter Strike Global Offensive which is only $14.99 on steam. You can play those games without all the levelling up you have to do on the others, to be competitive regarding weaponry.)

So as I was saying, I noticed some minor sparkling. That made me wonder if my graphics card was giving out. I have two in my rig, but I have crossfire disabled temporarily. The 7950 is so powerful, even at stock 800 clocks, I don't need it right now for my 2560x1600 gaming, since I finished Sleeping Dogs.

So I was doing some google research on sparkling, and there is much more on the subject in the newegg graphic card reviews than there is in google - you very quickly go back to 2002 on the 4th google lookup page. But the web page on top came up #3 on the search list.

But - thank god - my sparkling issue seems to have been only related to that title.

I had turned off my OSD (on screen display) after punkbuster kicked me out of one server two nights ago. Last night I jumped on BC2 for about 4 hours. I never turned on the OSD which involves starting MSI Afterburner, and then starting Rivatuner.

Last night I was thrilled to see that I had ZERO sparkling. Back to very beautiful graphics. I don't know what my frame rate was, but everything was smooth. From prior game play with the OSD, I always get fps of at least mid 40's in that game. I also didn't know what time it was, since I usually depend on the clock in the OSD, lol. Anyway, I finally quit a little after midnight, after about 4 hours of game play.

When I quit the game, I went smoothly back to the desktop. Back to desktop - no computer crash.

So what, you ask? What is remarkable about that? Well, for the last two months, I was never able to exit to the desktop without a reboot.

Here are the list of the very confusing symptoms, ONLY from that one title, BC2:

1. Each HIS IceQ 7950, individually, with crossfire disabled, stops reporting gpu load and gpu temp on the OSD within 10 minutes - I have never had that happen on any other title. The gpu load non-reporting extends to gpu-z logging. When I open the log in notepad, the load information disappears after about 10 minutes as I scan down that column.
2. In crossfire, within 10 minutes I have had BSODs and hangs and artifacts, which a month ago caused me to think I had ruined both cards right after expiration of the 30 day return on the second card. It caused me to take apart my crossfire, run only one card at a time, and ultimately to switch the cards so the least sensitive was on top, allowing me to disable crossfire and run the title for about 3 hours before a hang.
3. With crossfire disabled, one card allows only 10 minutes before a hang, the other allows up to 3 hours. The hang can only be solved through a reboot - task manager won't start.
4. But on either card, if I exit BEFORE the OSD stops reporting gpu temp and load, the exit is normal. In fact, before the OSD stops reporting gpu temp and load, I can alt-tab to desktop, and that also works as per normal. (To repeat, neither alt-tab nor simple exit the game can be done without reboot, once the OSD stops reporting gpu temp and load.)

I have posted about it - what I called the apparent driver incompatibility between the latest Catalyst and BF:BC2. I posted about it here, also over on the gaming thread, and I posted about it a few days ago in my second 5-egg newegg review of the HIS IceQ card and how it plays Sleeping Dogs, since that is the new free game that AMD is giving away with that card.

And I have been at least partially wrong on every post. Last night I learned that while Catalyst may be involved, without the OSD, it was smooth sailing. Longest play ever without a hang, and effortless exit to desktop.

So apparently it is an incompatibility with either MSI Afterburner, or Rivatuner, or Punkbuster, or all three. It never occurred to me to take the OSD out of the equation. You guys probably would have thought of that right away. That is the first thing I should have done, not the last.

LOL

Furthermore, the issue of minor on-screen sparkling, as evidenced by the disappearance of that symptom last night, seems to just be a title-related issue, to my vast relief.

I had thought that maybe I had a voltage regulation problem, like the guy in the pictures at the top, which made me wonder if I should buy the MSI Lightning 7970 card with add-on daughter board for voltage stability, price down to $400 - plus with that card I would also have to buy a $100 DP to dual dvi adapter = total investment $500. If the minor HIS sparkling is just World at War, that's an older title, and nothing newer has had that problem except on other brands, including Gigabyte, so I'll just ignore it.

So I learned last night: If you have a sudden problem, look at every variable, and for crisake turn off your OSD, plus try a different game. Duhhh. :\

Assuming that's for the 3007WFP, that's a fascinating article Rich, the red sparkling is indeed something I suffered with my 3007, and was never able to fully eradicate it with a different cable. Amusingly, it only ever happened on dark (but not very dark) blue backgrounds, just like the one in the example screenshot!

Had I known you were using an OSD all this time, I would have immediately told you to turn it off. I've had all sorts of stability issues with OSDs in the past. Afterburner's the only one that worked for me, but only if you didn't overclock the GPU, otherwise mayhem ensues!

No Sam, it's actually on his 50" plasma - but it's a short web page. In any case, it might be applicable to your monitor. Amazing how similar are the symptoms.

Sam, in every post on my BC2 problem I mentioned that the gpu load and gpu temp reporting disappeared FROM MY OSD after 10 minutes. So how did you not pick up that I was using an OSD. :P

I'm kidding. I don't fault you in the slightest for not catching that, I should have thought of it myself. Thanks for the extra info about OSD problems - I am indeed using Afterburner. I think I have learned my lesson, and next time hopefully I'll do a better job of isolating all the variables.

Sorry, forgive me, your posts are often such a length that I tend to skim read them, else I spend all day! When I see GPU load, I immediately assume it's GPUZ running in the background, because that's what I used to use.

Why in the world would an OSD cause such issues? It should simply be an overlay. I guess there's more to it then I thought. I don't recall what my issue was, but I have had an OSD cause a minor problem. Turning it off solved the problem. AHH! I remember! I couldn't run the OSD in Angry Birds Rio. I could hear audio, but only a white screen. Yup, you definitely wanna eliminate the OSD as a problematic source FIRST! Could save you some grief ;)

Thanks Rich. I love the Laptop. Windows 7 gave me some issues with Shares on the network, but otherwise smooth sailing. Apparently it wanted a reboot before the shared folders could be 100% seen/shared.

GPU-Z is awesome. I run it on my second display when gaming :p

The OSD hooks into the graphics driver to pull stats on GPU temperatures and clock speeds. Nobody who writes those applications can code for ****.

"Colorful Slang(****)"? LOL! I agree.

By the way. My new panel has a stuck/hot pixel :S Some screens it looks magenta(dark), and others (white) it appears more Cyan. I plan to run one of those flashy videos in the hopes it might fix it ;)

It isn't the dent that bothered me, it was the amount of damage caused by something so light. The piece of disk went in between the plastic on the back, where it meets the cover at it's right angle. In the end, the biggest piece I was able to find was about the size of a dime, the rest was very fine dust! I didn't find so much as a piece of the disk hub. It was probably a one in a billion shot. I know that doesn't sound plausible, but think about it. The only place it can move freely is between the two rails, and there isn't a lot of room. If the piece hits anything it would have disintegrated. This one makes it through, at bullet like speed, like it was planned that way! LOL!!

Russ

Oh you guys have bad luck... LOL!

I tried running Blue, Red, Yellow, And Pink rapidly flashing back and forth, on top of rubbing the screen. I swear the pixel jumped at one point, but it's probably just my eyes playing tricks on me. It's difficult for me to focus on super tiny things, even under magnifying glass. Especially approaching the evening hours :p

I'll probably just allow time to run it's course. I've had them disappear after a few months before. I'm sure video playback will correct it at some point.

Thanks anyhow ;)

Bad luck, most dead pixels you find these days are just permanently dark grey, which isn't really noticeable on anything other than white. There's one on one of my U2312HMs (but not the other), and a couple dotted around on my 3008WFP, but given the size of the screen, they're so unnoticeable I forget where they actually are, as I only notice them every few weeks or so!

I had a stuck pixel on my ASUS V242H that was fixed permanently by sharply flicking the offending pixel during video playback. One flick would have it disappear only to slowly fade back. About 3 or 4 in a row did the trick for good. Haven't seen it in a long while.

Those with more expensive monitors might not want to do that though. I've also had good results using the dull tip of a pen or pencil with a piece of paper towel between the screen and the pointed end of the instrument to avoid scratching. Just lightly flick the end.

Nice caveat. Jeff, or were you covering your butt? LOL

I have not noticed any dead/stuck pixels on my 30" Dell. The guy I bought it from, on ebay, 3 or 4 years ago - (how long has it been Sam since when I finally decided to follow in your footsteps? - and then I accused you of being a holdout because you didn't ever really adequately describe how immersive it is) met me at a kinko's about 80 miles north of here, and he had taken 3 or 4 of them home from his auto parts store - he was the manager and bought them wholesale - so he could give me one that had no dead pixels, since he knew I wanted him to fire it up before I handed over the moolah, about $850 as I recall.

He couldn't fit the box in his sports car, so it was sans protection, but it all worked out okay. (Hail Mary mother of god and several other prayers in various religions, plus knock on wood.)

That reminds me. Jeff, in my experience the now-$300-cheap 7950 is the crysis slayer we were all waiting for in my opinion. Evidence: With one card, I sailed through all 3 crysis with everything maxed and frame rates 32fps minimum, and no frame rate drop on ice, plus even Sleeping Dogs was 28 fps playable with the solid stable overclock at 975 - the 40+ fps in crossfire did not seem any smoother. BF3 was 35fps with ultra everything.

So my point was, maybe you should now be thinking of a 30" monitor?

Have already led one individual to permanently damage an Apple Cinema display by flicking it as hard as possible... There's a difference between a light flick and a bone crunching blow... Yeah common sense isn't so common.

LOL still not as masochistic as you guys. Have considered it, but $1000+ for a new Dell UltraSharp only to need another ~$1000 in new hardware to properly use it doesn't seem like a good time in my books :P

For the foreseeable future I'll be quite happy with my 1920 x 1200 native res :)

I had an interesting experience with Super Pi. My Super Pi has dropped to as low as 17.082 seconds.

Unfortunately Extreme Systems has been dragging their feet for years, so you can't validate the scores. I finally figured out how to clear existing calculations. I've never seen the 17 second bracket before.

The downsides of single threaded benchmarks...

Were that multi-threaded, we'd be looking at fairly similar times, 2.99s for you and 2.54s for me. Two seconds ain't much of a benchmark though, eh? :P

Jeff; Totally understand, and that was one of my reasons not to initially buy one, until I actually saw it in action. My PC gets used for games relatively little compared to everything else, and simply having 4096K pixels for desktop use is so useful, it really makes other monitors seem very constricting. Besides, should the need arise, I have the U2312HM if I want a native 1080p display instead :)

No offense, but I hope that Piledriver or Steamroller stomps all over intel(Probably unlikely though). Because I'm a fanboy? No. Because I like to see the two companies rival? Hell yes!

On another note, my ISP finally admitted to my Bandwidth super spike being a "Glitch" on their end :) They dropped me back to my subscription rate, and everything has been running smooth for 24hrs. As you can imagine, I'm very happy about this ;) Disconnections are quite irritating.

Very unlikely unfortunately. I'm still hopeful, because even though I've stuck with Intel for offering faster (disregarding absolute value) CPUs for over 6 years, competition is always a good thing - look at how stagnant things have become on the Intel side of late, without AMD pushing from behind. Right now the second successor to my CPU costs 20% more than mine did, and is around 40% faster out of the box, maybe 35% faster than my overclocked CPU when also overclocked. With the cost of a new board too, it ain't worth it!

Depends on the film length. I haven't encoded a film lately, but low-bitrate 1080p (e.g. youtube) will encode on my i5 at around 1.7-2.0x realtime, so 40-50 minutes for an 85 minute film, and around 70-80 minutes for a 140 minute film.
Up the bitrate and that performance will come down a bit, so for a long 1080p feature at high bitrate, I'd guess at around 100-120 minutes on my current CPU.
What I'd really like to see is a program that can actually use OpenCL to encode video, but so far none seem to actually use the GPU to encode at all, even when accelerated...

Using BD-Rebuilder, I can set for the "Faster-Better" quality and average 3hrs or less on most discs, but a lot of discs have a crap ton of extra features, which I also want to keep :p I rarely every do a movie only encode. Soon I'll be using MultiAvchd to consolidate whole cartoon seasons (480P) to single BD-25. If I'm right, quality will be unaffected.

The faster setting supposedly cannot be compared to high quality setting. But since I plan to use a projector for my movies one day, I prefer my backups were as good as they can be.

Current record for Super Pi is 18.002 seconds :) Have had it in the high 17s at 4GHz but it was never quite stable. Would IBT under normal stress but wouldn't pass under high stress. Sadly Super Pi has been proven to be quite Intel biased, regardless of actual differences in processing power.
