You know it's called Disk Management though ;) That's the beauty of that search bar. You get results as you're typing :D

Yeah, if you're not able to remember it, on Windows 7 you at least have the help bar to do the job for you.

I'm a pretty fast typist. Often, running from that location is faster than searching the program bar. Voice command is even faster at times. I really need to set that up again :S

Yes it is faster and easier once you know one of the several tricks to get there. I agree the new online help sucks and definitely XP is better in that area.

Just bought a new TV to replace the effectively dead LG 32". This time a Coby 39" for $50 cheaper than my original TV. $340 all said and done.

All the features I need and GREAT picture quality. Easily comparable to any other TV in the store in regards to image quality, including several higher-end Samsung LED models. Also loving the size increase.

Only one simple caveat. No RCA audio out :(

Kinda important as I use my TV as a multimedia hub for my PC through HDMI, using it as the source for my stereo receiver. The in-built speaker is just horrible. My previous TV had a much better integrated speaker. Basically, no TV audio output = no PC audio output for my home theater setup = no music, movies, or games able to output to the stereo at all. The speaker isn't even usable for regular cable as the quality is so horrendous.

Coax to RCA Digital to Analog converter ordered. Basically the cheapest and most generic one I could find. We'll see how it does for quality. They seem to be hit and miss. Worst case scenario, I return it for in-store credit and try the next cheapest model, lol.

Now granted I still have my dedicated 5.1 setup and headset for 90% of games, but you can't beat the TV with home theater speakers for console emulation, movies, games that can use the 360 pad, etc. Especially movies. Also great for music though my PC speakers have decidedly better overall sound quality. Certainly not near the volume or power though.

Mmmm, Cyber monday I bought a JVC 37" 1080P HDTV(305 USD counting 3yr warranty). Zero overscan issues through HDMI on my PC. Haven't played with it's audio capabilities. My Wii is ran directly to my Stereo receiver. It has lots of inputs :p Should I ever need simultaneous sound from Wii and PC, well... I guess my Wii will be plugged directly to the TV.

Rather large for a desktop :S But I do enjoy watching Blu-rays, and playing Wii on a display that isn't finicky about certain video standards. The Dell monitor would encounter issues when loading certain apps on the Wii.

Oman7,

I know it's called Disk Management right now, but 10 minutes from now, who knows? It's what happens when you have had a lot of small strokes, over a period of 11 years or so. When your cognitive memory starts going, you've run out of places to hide! ROFL!! Still, I didn't have any particular difficulties with this build other than it taking me much longer to do than it used to. My thought process, planning, and getting the parts all together over a period of a couple of months was no problem. I made a few bad calls, but did what I needed to do to make it the way I intended it to be, in the first place. I wound up with a couple of extra fans, that broke the first couple of times they were used. The first shucked a blade taking another two blades with it. The other the frame cracked on the corner where the screw goes in. My cover fans are suspended in rubber, there was no reason for it to break, other than it's a crappy fan, made out of too brittle a material. I guess even Scythe make's a bad design every once in a while.

The case, exceeds expectations, as it shines in every category. Even with a full ATX motherboard, there was still plenty of room to work inside the case. It's cooling is second to none unless you've spent big bucks for a complete professional WC system. to be able to cool everything so well, with such a modest liquid cooler as the H60, is truly amazing to me. I'm impressed with the 79908 MIPS, and the 8366MB/s memory bandwidth @3.4GHz. I'm also happy with the overclock I did to 3.8GHz that yielded 87454 MIPS, and an 8958MB/s memory bandwidth.

I'm looking forward to finishing the FX-8320, as the 16GB of Cas8, DDR3-1866, PC3-14900 GSkills Ripjaws ram came today. I'm going to wipe the SSD and install Windows 8 on the 1090t, while I'm finishing putting together the FX-8320. I can't wait to get under the hood, and see what it's got in the bios setup to surprise me this time, in the 990FXA-UD5.

I'm wishing you and yours, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year,
Russ

Flicked over it and looks a pretty legit guide for beginners if any of you have reason to need it (by which I mean share with others, not for yourselves - haha).

Oman7,

I just finished installing the full version of Windows 8, 64 bit. Is MicroShaft intentionally trying to screw us again? It was bad enough M$ took .gif files away with win 7, but Win 8 doesn't even play DVDs, and it's slower than 7! If that doesn't beat all, when I put the driver disk in for the motherboard, it gives a message, that it doesn't support Windows 98? Kind of put's it all in perspective, doesn't it? :) Oh well, Russell will figure it all out. He's good at that! LOL!!

Best Regards,
Russ

The younger generation may be hip on this new design. Frankly, it seems like a logical venture to me. Is it right for a desktop environment? Not for everyone. So, one can configure more toward desktop mode, and opt out of metro. But for people on the go, a laptop (especially the tablet looking ones) would be ideal for a lot of people. Not to mention revised code that comes with Windows 8, which better handles state of the art CPU's.

I think we're judging the OS a bit prematurely. I only played with it a few minutes. It seemed likable. But I don't have a touchscreen, since I destroyed my upgrade :S So I won't be able to give it the trial it deserves. The way it was intended to run ;) And I'm sure people will find ways of modifying the OS to better suit their needs, and wants. They always do...

There always has to be a critic. :D Yes that is my interpretation as it would be tough to tape a notebook to your monitor, even if it was a paper notebook and not a computer.

Oman7,

Wait until your first time you accidentally drop on icon on another icon. You can move the top one, but there is no way to move or delete the text only icon it leaves behind. How do I set my folders to icons only in win 7. I don't like thumbnails or previews when you open a folder, I just want files.

The FX8320 is up and running. I may have a bad CPU though. The screen freezes, but it really just radically slows down to a bare crawl. After a couple of minutes it usually starts to work properly again. Why the CPU? because the FX has had that problem since day one, and with two sets of hardware, I've eliminated everything but the CPU. I move the CPU and the problem moves with me. I think that's a sign! ROFLMSOAO!!

Russ
Block both and delete them, then restore one of them from the Trash Can, move it and restore the other one, if I'm following you properly.

As to viewing files, you can view them just like in XP or you have the choice of viewing them in the enhanced modes Vista/7 offer. There are more options, but still the old ones too for the most part. List or Detail should give you what you are looking for, I assume. Sorting is a whole other issue though as in Vista/7 they automatically sort all folders except the Desktop which is done better in XP in my opinion.

Also Russ, you could make a folder of shortcuts, or add them to the Links folder, for all of the conveniences you need/use from time-to-time, I use the Links folder for all of my extended shortcuts/program jumps. This way you don't forget were they are, they don't fall off the front of your monitor or block your view. Clean approach and no mistyping them once they are created and verified. I have shortcuts to roaming/local profiles, temp caches, program data, Quick Launch, Control Panel cpl's, and so on all in my Links folder, it works great.

Is there a broken record somewhere? :D

I believe you set that per individual folder in the right click options.

Estuansis,

There's a global setting in there somewhere that makes all the folders files. I've used it before.

How about a benchmark or two.

Processor Arithmetic 3.8GHz

And the Memory Bandwidth.

The is right at 7000 MIPS slower than the 1090t. The 16GB of 1866, Cas 8 memory works great.

Memory timings at 3.8GHz

Not too bad at all!

Russ

Hey guys, what's up.

I have been away pre-occupied with playing Far Cry 3, one of the most awesome games ever, with the best pieces of all of the Crysis games and the prior Far Cry games plus a lot of other games added to it. They did a superb job and the game is a big payoff for anybody who invests in building a heavy-duty powerful rig. Pop over to my first gaming post about it with 3 pictures on the gaming thread: Find post 8294 near or at the bottom of the page.

Here's one:

Here's a holiday gift to all of you guys.

If you like the Nutcracker Suite - it's great holiday music. I downloaded a 450MB flac version from a classic recording off of vinyl records years ago - it's perfect quality. Copyright expired years ago. I converted it to 30 MB of mp3 at high bit rate - exceptional quality.

I have been playing it in my iTunes from my laptop hooked to my big screen TV which has decent speakers, and I boost the low frequencies on the equilizer, although it actually sounds best in my office with the big subwoofer of my altec lansing PC speakers - the lower end violas, cellos, bassoons, tympani, etc. beautifully fill in the sound. Tchaikovsky was remarkable - one foot in Serbian composition - the other in traditional western classical composition.

That reminds me - I'll turn it on right now, lol. Wow, always even better than I had remembered!

The following username and password access only that one folder on my web site.

username is afterdawn
password is afterdawn-1

I find that ONLY Internet Explorer will do ftp file transfer - chrome lets you see the files, but won't transfer them.

EDIT: I forgot to tell you where the ftp site is: in your Internet Explorer url, type ftp.harvardguy.com. Then you can probably cancel the first two requests for username and password, until you get to a page that says Internet Explorer can't load the page. On the command bar, hit the link called Page, and at the bottom choose: Open the ftp site in Windows Explorer - THEN fill in the username and password. When the window opens, right-drag and COPY to your desktop or to a folder. (If you accidentally move it out, then please copy it back in.) That's all - easy!

Happy holidays,
Rich

Far Cry 3 is indeed great. Still fundamentally a bit boring, but drastically more engaging than Far Cry 2. Sadly the map interface and menus stink of consolitis as well as the general controls. It translates remarkably well though and scales wonderfully to high end PCs. PC gamers get by far the better looking game, no contest. The console versions are about equal to medium/high at middling to low resolution.

Am currently waiting on more hardware to be able to max it effectively. X6 1090T and 6970 in the works. Second 6970 will be a hassle though I am sure Amazon or Ebay will have a used one for a reasonable price. Just the one is the goal for now, to be able see the difference. Crossfire certainly works, though hard to place a scaling percentage on it. Maybe the memory boost and elimination of scaling worries is all I need. As I understand it my cards Crossfired are more or less equal to a 6970 when scaling is ideal, which it hardly ever is.

Lately have been going back to Bad Company 2. It is especially sensitive to stability issues so has been unplayable for me the last few months. Crashed every 20 minutes to an hour. With the new parts in place and new OC stabilized, I have been playing problem-free for hours and hours :)

Such a fun and fundamentally solid game. BF3 doesn't hold a candle. Too much room for exploitation and the large maps and large player sizes are too confusing without a dedicated commander mode. DICE were onto something with 32 players on medium-ish maps. BC2 is undeniably fun. Wish BF3 were better organized. Also, BF3 is another game that will need more Vram to play properly, so I've been avoiding it. That doesn't have me hurting too bad though. Bought the full game only to have them release all the best maps in expensive DLCs. BC2 had exactly 2 DLCs and neither was essential to enjoy all the maps for the stock game. All the map packs were free.
