'fraid HC Encoder's no resource pig, what it does do is utilise available CPU resources, which is exactly what you'd expect it to do.. My PC's are perfectly usable during HC encodes. CCE is way too overrated when HC does as good/almost as good, and for free to boot :)

I don't remember doing anything special. Under mode, I changed encoder from CCE to HC then under settings, HC settings changed quality/speed selection from fastest to bestest(all you grammar nazi's i know bestest isnt a real word, it just fit the flow of the sentence LOL).
I changed to HC when i got this hyper-threading i7...was kinda surprised the first time i seen 8 different encoding windows open.
Deadrum33,
I'll give it a try then and see how much difference it makes. Thanks again.
Best regards,
Russ

Well...I haven't used it in a while. I just can't see heating up my processor, when cce will do it almost as quick, while not heating up much at all :p We all have our own preferences ;)

Heating up eh, don't forget my Q6000 machine runs full pelt the whole time it's on (which is a lot) as i run Seti@home & Milkyway units the whole time; if i was doing any DVDRB encoding (not that often these days) i'd turn the those off, but the rest of the time (and during ConvertXtoDVD and the like) i leave them on. My motto is that CPU's should be working hard when they're on. Talking of which my works linux box stays on 24/7 (100 day uptime at the moment, it would be twice that but we had a power cut and i didn't have a UPS in place at the time) and it runs Seti@home & Milkyway the whole time also. But yeah indeed, each to their own :)

Perhaps I will give HC another go. I don't like that the CCE window insists on being on top of other windows. Quite irritating indeed. Especially for 2000$ software :S

I heard that hybrid hard drives have the speed of SSD's and the capacity of normal sata hard drives. has anyone had any experience with hybrid drives?

Not correct. Hybrid drives have the speed of normal SATA hard drives. They are faster for a very small number of select processes.

AFAIK the hybrid drives simply have a really large cache used similarly to an SSD. From what I'm reading they have their uses but for a home user aren't wonderfully practical. If you want SSD performance, the best course of action would be to wait for SSDs to drop in price(which they are).

Deadrum33,
Well I tried HC encoder last night, even at normal quality, it's bog slow! Maybe it's the fact that I have a very small Pixel Pitch (0.242) for the size of my monitor (20.1"), but I pride myself in making better looking DVDs than you can commercially buy! I can't get near that quality with HC!
I tried making sense out of Vurbal's guide, but it's far too technical, but not that good in telling you how to use it! I'll stick with DVDRB/CCE. "Unstoppable" took 22 minutes and looks awesome!

Russ

DVD rebuilder seems to get the best reviews, so I imagine thats probably worth sticking with. If Russ is getting a good boost with a hex CPU versus a quad the program is clearly using all 6 threads, so he should stick with that.
Also, this ad is really pissing me off. I accidentally mouseover it and it doesn't go away again :/ It plays music too.
Well aware you guys in the US will probably see something different here, but putting this up for the guys at the site to see. If it becomes too much of an issue I'll post it in the problems thread.

I use FF with adblock and noscript and I haven't had any issues with AD at all. Maybe it's because I'm NA user and not UK, but the only hint of an ad on AD I see is a whitespace between posts ;)

Red_Maw,
What Sam is talking about is adds that appear right on top of the post text, that move with the text. If you scroll up or down, the text stays covered. You have to close the window and open AD 2 or 3 times to get rid of it. It's glorified Spam! Adblock+ and Noscript won't block it!

Peerblock blocks most/if not all of that stuff! :p But peerblock can be paranoid at times. There are sites that it blocks, that should be safe...

Oman7,
I just installed PeerGuardian2 recently, and I haven't seen any spam or anything like it since!

Peerguardian? Is that still in development :p I thought that Peerblock was a continuation. Peerguardian/2 is incompatible with windows 7. Sorry about off topic. If we need to continue, we can do it via PM.

Yes Peerblock is the updated and Windows 7 compatible version. Peerguardian 2 hasn't seen development for years now.

That is your best bet I use CCE or ProCoder but if you are running Windows 7 ProCoder will crash unless you have one of the most recent versions. If you have Vista or XP no problems then I personally prefer ProCoder 3 but the new CCE is almost as good.
I'm not sure if they have improved HC encoder since I used it but it didn't perform to my standards when I used it years ago. It did OK and was fast but definately not as sharp as CCE or ProCoder.
People still use PeerGuardian? I shouldn't be suprised DVD Shrink is still being used decades after it's last update. I'll have to checkout PeerBlock I wasn't aware they picked up the ball.

Depending on the circumstances, Dvd shrink is still usable. I prefer it to Dvd fab. Dvd Fab can be rather dirty with it's outputs. Changing the PGC's can be useful ;) Though I'm attempting to learn PGCedit So I no longer have to :D

Shrink is far from 100% and with that why bother with it. In it's day it was a great tool but that was then this is now!
Fab is OK but not in the same ball park as DVD-RB or BD-RB the quality just isn't as good but it is simple in it confusion of a UI.
If you want to author DVD's IFO Edit or PGC is good but again there are others better depending on the task at hand.
Really once you get setup Rebuilder can be just as easy if not easier than Fab or other programs but when you want the best quality with decent flexability Rebuilder is the best.

lol, I don't use the others for transcoding per say. I simply use there speed and abilities. Shrink is highly rapid, when it's close to dvd-5 output to begin with. Fab can alter the dvd structure and go straight to the menu, or main title. I might start using Anydvd for that though. But ultimately, I want to use PGCedit for that. If there is something else that can do this, I was unaware :p

Mr-Movies,
DVD Shrink was born April 7, 2003, and was used with DVD Decryptor, using Nero as the Burn Engine Version 1.02 was the first official release. Version 3.2.0.14 was it's final release, July 25, 2004! The fact that is still occasionally in use after almost 8 years, is remarkable in this day of ever changing, non-compatible software.
http://www.dvdshrink.info/history.php
The addition of RipIt4Me, June 30, 2006 gave new life to DVD Shrink, and as you say, is still in use today. The final Version 1.7.10 was released March 22, 2007, and I still occasionally use it myself, with DVD shrink, DVD Decryptor and Nero.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/RipIt4Me/version-history
My version of CCE is SP270 Trial, released in December 2005, and has been Purchased/updated to Version 270.02.04 which allows for multiple CPU cores and a few other enhancements. Cinema Craft HD Encoder is the latest offering, but I have no idea of what it costs. It's the best program that I have ever used, and is the program by which all other Encode Programs are judged by. It works very well, and I'm more than Happy with it's performance with my 6 core 1090T.
Best Regards,
Russ
