If anybody is interested in a cheap way to get 4 Liquid Metal Armor's in Dragon Quest VIII (and King Metal Armor's with a little creativity), read this. Otherwise look away:
Okay this isn't incredibly cheap, but a little. It'll still take 3-5 hours of your time, depending on your luck. Once you have the Casino open in Baccarat (after Dragon Graveyard Stage), you get 600 tokens to start. You can get some extremely rare/valuable items as prizes in the casino, like Liquid Metal Armor or the Gringham Whip. Simply keep playing the 100 token slot machine until you get a couple 1,000 coins built up. It shouldn't take more than 30 mins or so. Save/reload when necessary after big scores and losses. If you play it long enough, you'll hit 20000+ coins a couple times. I even lucked out and got a 777 combo once for 100,000 coins. Always place the max bet of 500 coins. This is pretty retard proof. I have a wireless controller, so I just keep pressing down on the D-pad while multi-tasking. It doesn't require any skill or concentration. You will almost certainly have enough coins for a couple liquid metal armor's/grigham whip within a couple hours. It's a little cheap, but you have to invest the time. Anyway just thought some of you might want to get a little leg up. Cheers!

Yeah I'm almost done with DQVIII. After I secure my last Liquid Metal Armor, it's time to take down Rhapthorne and move on. 140+ hours is enough. I've got too many backups I want to play. Tales of Legendia or Nocturne is next. Cheers!

For people who can't play all their RPG's, there's always a save file like from Codebreaker: http://www.cmgsccc.com/games.php?system=ps2 I figured if I played every RPG i owned, it would take about 800+ hours from start to finish. A cheat device is good sometimes ;) oh crap, i'll play the RPGs and cheat all the action games instead

Booooo!!! Hisssss!!! Nah I'm messing with ya, I used to be cheap with emulators and reload all the time. It's not exactly the same as cheating with Code Breaker or ARMAX, but the principle's the same. Cheers!

NEVER! =P
I'm one of those insanely zealous RPG fanatics. I've always played the RPG as it was intended, with the exception of using Save Slots on the few ROMS I played. Indeed it would take many hours to complete every RPG I own or anyone for the amtter, but that's why I've always considered myself more of a collector, because I own more RPGs then I've beaten. XD
Once I get Spring Break the week of the 13th, I'm going balls to the walls with DQVIII and hopefully I'll be able to knock it out!
As for the BoF series, I've always loved them, III and IV being my favorites. And I found BoFV:DQ was different, a little strange and off-putting, so I never actually played it for a decent amount of time to truly say what I feel about it. It'll be in that giant pile of "RPGs TMAC Needs To Beat."
Signature? What signature!? Oh wait...I actually have one
now.

so you just mentioned Dragon Quest VIII: http://tinyurl.com/s7al6 Between the FF series & DW/DQ, which do you think has kept more to its roots? which is the better of the two series?
My vote: DQ only because you have the same good story telling, same hero, and same side characters (slimes!) over 15+ games w/out ruining the formula. (I'm including the PSX & GBA games in there). I'm not saying innovation/newness isn't good, but FF has kind of tried to steer itself as a cross between an action/RPG game. Widening the appeal to non-RPG gamers is good, but there are some things bothering me. i'll leave my 3 page rant for uhhh.. later ;)

Seems as though ive been away for a little while, so whats up people? Ive recently only been playing Grandia III, just finished the first disc, clocked in at 19 hours, a healthy dose of a game i think. That said, ive played DQVIII for 55 hours and ive just got Jessica back. Hmm, should start playing that again, though its battle system is gonna pale in comparison to ToL or Grandia III, the overall game is brilliant compared to both. Shadow Hearts III on Tuesday, and another 23 days till the big one. Kingdom Hearts II! When that comes out, im gonna abandon ALL of my other games, and just get straight to it. Im looking forward to spending another 50-60 hours on that game, just hope there are more sidequests now, than in the first game. KH was pretty linear in the actual quest.

THE thing is, both games have aged well. Theres always something new, and innovative in the FF series, and its pretty easy to get used to. When i play a Final Fantasy, its just completely different to playing any other RPG. I feel the same way about DQ, It gives me that same sense of adventure in every game. DQ has stuck more to its roots, and could definetly be called a Traditional RPG. I gotta say though, in this case, I love tradition!
FF games always seem to have a high production values. They're generally fantastic games, and looking at other games of the Genre, they always seem to churn out something special. THe adventure starts out quite innocently, the Hero doing what he is doing for his own reasons, but during the course of his quest, he finds out theres a much greater evil he must face, for the whole of the world. Seems quite simple, though its always how its presented, and the things in between these actions that make them GREAT games.

I haven't played enough DQ to make an educated vote. I beat DQV, played thru DQVI until the English translation ended, and now have played to the end of DQVIII. Aside from reloading and manipulating save states with emus, I don't cheat. I never cheat with PS2 games, takes the fun out of it. When I beat a super difficult boss, I want it to be because I was strong and smart enough, not because I had infinite HP. I mean getting 4 Liquid Metal Armors in DQVIII is easy, you just need to invest 3-5 hours in the slots. To me it's worth it, I know the rest of the game will be a snap. I'm on Spring Break, so I should be done with DQVIII asap. Let's see FF or DQ... for older games... FF... newer games... DQ.

Wow, obviously I stumbled on the RPG gamers paradise here, eh? I'm not nearly as big a RPGer (is that proper english?) as tokijin (I was still playing Mega Man X when he was finishing 100hours on FFV) but I've played quite a few (FFVII, FFX, KH, some FF tactics and 1/4 of DQVIII to name a few) but generally I don't get 100% completion (KH probably my exception). So, let me ask this. If you don't complete a game to the MAX do you regret it? Personally I only regret it if you get like a bonus for 100%.
Anyway, do you RPGer's play many other genre's of games? Like action? Just wondered if played games like God of War.
On the subject of the thread. I think from a buisness standpoint as long as FF is making money they'll be making FF. But, from a personal point. I think every FF is so different in terms of story (and battle system tweaks) that they seem only loosely related (Cid, Phoenix Downs), so as long as each game retains their own personality I don't see a problem (although FFXXII does seem excessive).
There are my two bits on the subject.

Oh yeah, one more question. What do you guys think of GBA rpgs? Fire Emblem is quite incredible as a SRPG and the Golden Sun series is great game as well(my SN is based of a character in the game).
Just wondering what your thoughts were.

I haven't played a ton of TOL, but I certainly wouldn't say it sucks. I'm a big fan of the series, so I like all the Tales games. TOL doesn't suck. It may suck in Bacon's opinion, but that doesn't mean it's gospel truth. Anymore than I think old school games are great, you're not wrong if you think otherwise. I don't mean to get preachy, but when someone says game X blows (myself included), it gets my goat a little, especially when there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. Read some reviews of TOL and see if it's for you. The original Tales of Destiny wasn't great, but I like it anyway. I like other types of games, I've been known to play some sports games, but I tire of them quickly. The exception is hockey, I love a good match of NHL 2006. I have a buddy who's been training to beat me for a couple months. He takes it seriously. I keep telling him he's going to kill me, I never play it anymore. I'm pretty good with football, basketball, and hockey, I've only recently "acquired" some baseball games. Anyone have Shadow Hearts 3 yet, I do. :) Cheers!

This thread seemed to be dying for a few days, glad to see its back in motion again. Guess it was just in a coma. Shadow Hearts III got a good review on IGN:
http://ps2.ign.com/articles/694/694277p1.html
as did Tales Of Legendia:
http://ps2.ign.com/articles/685/685562p1.html
And personally, i couldnt agree with them more. Ive acquired Shadow Hearts, havnt stuck it in yet tho. Legendia is a pretty good game, Ive just finished the first chapter, and have started getting into it. There are flaws with the game, but any TRUE RPGer(kidding) can overlook these and play on... Right now im deciding to play Grandia III, and ive just finished the first disc. Im not gonna be one of those guys that tries to get everyone to Level 99 in this game, seems a little difficult, although i did get some crazy mana eggs from fusion, which i used to extract 6*+ magic, like Galactic Bang... (sorry, got a bit excited there.) The game seems pretty good, not as epic as the other two, since u dont get that sense of relief when u beat a boss, and u dont look forward to the story sequences as much. Ive gave up on DQVIII for a couple of days, needed a rest from that difficulty (not really, im just lazy to run down the path to Blizzard Peaks.)
Beside RPG's, i do enjoy other games, Tho i dont blend with FPS's at all. Action games like DMC and Onimusha appeal, and Adventure isnt half bad. Umm, Winning Eleven 9 is great, as is NBA Street. A game just have to have something special to draw me in.
19 days til KHII!

I was skeptical about Tales of Legendia, due to the new look and reverting to an older style battlesystem. But I have to say I was actually impressed. I like the style of the graphics, they're chibi and colorful, but very well constructed. The only gripe I have is with some of the voice acting. Of course Cam Clarke gives a good performance as always, but some of the characters seem like they lack the emotional infliction needed once in awhile. It's not HORRIBLE like in some games ala www.audioatrocities.com, but it just lacks that little something from making it great.
Shadow Hearts I've ALWAYS been interested in, but I never seem to actually get around to playing them. For the past year I've been wanting to play atleast one of them but I always manage to get sidetracked somehow. XD
As for other genres, I play pretty much everything except for Hardcore Sims (Flight etc.). Racing, FPS, Adventure, Action, Fighters, Puzzle and a little Sport.
Bah, gotta go back to FFXI it beckons me. ><

@Felix1410: I don't think anyone has time to start & end every RPG that they like. Take DQ8 for example. I've heard the game can be completed in under 60 hrs, but even that's steep. So if you bypass the sidequests (which unlike "filler" in some games, are actually fun in DQ8) & go straight for the end that's still 60 hours. Final Fantasy X can be finished in about 30-40, but only if you are very lucky in battles & again NO sidequests. So right there you have 100 hours. If I played 2hrs/day that would take 50 days. There are like 2-3 killer RPGs that come out every 3 months, so that means I'm missing one of them just to play the other two.
RPGs are like life. Do you start and finish everything you do? Well if you do you're obviously better off than most people. There are only 24 hours in a day.
Enjoy what you can, take what you will out of life. Live every day like it may be your last, and don't regret it.

Wise words, though i would expect nothing less than a "hardcore " man lol. Ur right, people like us will get so many games, we'll forget about em. U'll know the specific titles u wanna play though, the ones that stick out (18 days til KHII mind) and you'll EVENTUALLY go and play em. Im playing Grandia III again, second disc. Since the battle system is so good, i got straight back into it. When I play DQVIII now, i know im gonna find it really tedious because of the slow pacing of the battles compared to Grandia III and Tales Of Legendia (which i've also been playing at the moment.) If i can get going though, and get to the next story sequence, i'll start getting into the game again. Btw I wouldnt normally play 3-4 RPGs at a time, they're just time fillers til KHII is released. After that I'll think about finishing em off, though i'll probably finish Grandia III anyway since its so short! Thats my BS said, laters!

Bottom line: The most important thing is to HAVE FUN.
Do you need to complete every d*mn thing you do in life?
For myself, no.
But having a good life, keeping things together, and not feeling like I'm 10 years older than I *should be* is cool. Got a paycheck, got a house, got a car. And last time I checked, had too many games to play. Want to see for yourself? This is one fourth of the official backup list: http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/26/xhardc0resps2gameslist1of46...

What is that like 35 games? so 35x4 would be 140 games. Looked over em, not many that id want to play lol not anymore anyway. I only download and acquire games that i WOULD actually play, which turn out to be mostly RPG's. lol well Action games are god, though they gotta have a bit of strategy, not just all button-mashing, though that can be fun for super fast and frenzied combos.
I did a 32 hit combo in Grandia III with Yuki. Used Berserker and flash, and got a little luchky, did almost 4000 damage to the enemy!

RPGs are my home & I'm rather "hardc0re" about my love for them, don't misunderstand. But a good button masher (Soul Calibuuuuur thrreee!!) and action games (Devil May Cry 3 is mad fun) help break things up a bit. One type I really miss is a good sports game, other than racing. BUT BACK ON TOPIC...........
Since we pretty much talked a lot about FF & now DQ, which RPG do you absolutely despise for PS2? A game thats just "abs0lutelez sUck0rz teh nutz" and you recommend NOT playing. Give reasons and proof.
Worst rpg on the PS2: Unlimited Saga *expletives deleted
Why Square, why? Did you need quick $hundred thousand$ and threw this P.O.S. together one weekend? OMG.... A total mess of a project (it ain't a game..trust me). You can lose around an hour's worth of progress if you are careless and (for adventures that permit retrying at no penalty) you are not crafty/careful enough to use up your turn limit. Save atleast character progress every 2 battles (major pain in the arse). Mediocre voice acting (makes Magna Carta look like a Shakespeare play). There is a lot of repetition in the battles and the story lines are very, very weak. Basically the game can be broken down in these steps:
1) Move, fight or stop
2) find new place, move, fight or stop
3) upgrade weapons/abilities
Don't even rent this game. If you see it at a store, please drop it on the floor & kick toward trash can. Trust me, this is one game that will make you angry & violent. Even Amazon says it suck0rz: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00009ETL0/102-4638...

Hardcore, i agree with you. That game is the biggest piece of bullshit ive played. What the hell are u supposed to do. When i first bought the game, i though id actually be able to push the analog stick and WALK. I was mistaken, u have to move around from sketch to sketch, occasionally encountering monsters. Even IGN gave it a 4 i think, and thats generous. The battle system was ok, but everything else was complete utter shit. The only plus side to it was the FFX-2 video that was delivered with the game, and the cool boxset it came in. lol, a total atrocity, and gives a bad name to RPG's.
