I am having the same problem as the original poster. I have a Sony Vaio VGCRB50 and I use Sonic RecordNow to make data DVDs and Verbatim DVD+R discs. I have reinstalled my driver, and tried system restore. I had this problem once before and when it was fixed, I was told there was something wrong with the registry. I don't know exactly what, hopefully you all might have some insight? I also can't figure out why this is happening a second time.

Hello muffinj.

Download DVD Identifier (free) here:

http://dvdindentifier.cdfreaks.com

Install the program and place a blank DVD in your drive. Start DVD Identifier. Does DVD Identifier recognize and report on the blank disk?

What does My Computer show for the drive?

I also seem to be having a similar problem.
I have a Samsung SH-S182M with Firmware SB02 in an external USB enclosure.
When I insert a blank TDK DVD-R (Daxon0016s) the drive just spins and spins.
The cursor changes to the CD icon, then normal, then back.
It doesn't stop (I've waited several minutes).
The green light on the drive blinks away and you can hear the motor noises.

WinXP SP2
I have Nero installed, but I usually use CloneDVD.

The drive recognizes Verbatim DVD+R just fine.
And it worked with 1 of the TDKs in the past (was able to use DVDInfo). Then I tried to use a program called DVD Idenitifier, and it didn't work. That may have caused the problem, I don't know. I uninstalled DVD Identifier.
Is there something in the registry I need to change?
I tried flashing the firmware, but no change.
Do I need to uninstall Nero?
Anyone seen anything like this?

Hi.

The Daxon media is pretty low on the quality scale. If your burner likes the Verbs, use them and forget the TDK (Daxon) media. SB02 is the latest firmware version for your Samsung as far as I can tell. Your burner probably just doesn't like that media.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
i have 100 of these *@$$!&!!@#($*

Edit:
But how did the drive recognize them at first?
It worked before...
Seems like it must be a software issue.

OK. Your drive is recognizing the disks correctly. Blank DVDs are recognized by WinXP as CDs since there is no native support for DVDs which is why 3rd party software is used for playing and burning DVDs.

Does RecordNow not recognize the blank disks? Or are the disks recognized but you get a burn failure?

Media and burners sometimes mix like oil and water. Part of the problem in using low quality media is that it is inconsistent in quality. That's why most of us recommend Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony which is usually made by Taiyo Yuden. Any other media is a roll of the dice sometimes with some burners. If you find a media that works well with a burner, stick to it. Also branded burners like Memorex are usually selling a burner manufactured by another supplier and often lag in firmware updates and may not recognize some newer media or have a specific write strategy in its firmware for that particular media.

I earlier had a problem which was fixed by switching back to DVD+R media. Suddenly, I find that while writing DVD+Rs, my Nero goes through the motions and takes about 16 minutes to burn a DVD at 4x and shows the burn process to be completed successfully.

However, My Computer shows Freespace=0 bytes and Total bytes = 0 bytes and refuses to read the DVD.

When I insert a blank DVD, My Computer shows the drive to be CD and shows freespace to be 0. But Nero's disc info shows the free space to be the correct 4.something GB.

Please help. I have tested a number of blank DVDs from different new boxes but have the same problem. It goes through the process but shows zilch at the end of it all. It is the same DVD+R media which never gave me trouble in the past.

I have checked and deleted all the references to GEARAspiWDM.sys and
PxHelp20.sys but to no avail.

I should mention that I am able to write and read CDs. Also, I am able to read DVDs which have been written earlier on this system itself. I should also mention that my hard disk free space had come down to less than 100 MB because of which windows restore had shut down. I have now freed up about 2 GB space on my hard disk and wonder if the low hard disk space caused some change in the settings which has made burnings DVDs impossible.

Please help.

I enlose below my last Nero log:

Hi.

First, the media you're using ranks very low on the quality scale. Try to use Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and media labeled as Made in Japan (MIJ), preferably Sony (MIJ) and Fuji (MIJ). Laptop burners can be very picky about the media they like.

Second, since you're burning an ISO, try using ImgBurn, a free program, that's a much better burner imo than the Nero engine.

http://www.imgburn.com

Third, sometimes the CDRAL Roxio driver can conflict with Nero.

Quote:
File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS': Ver=8.0.0.212 , size=2560 bytes, created 5/20/2006 2:46:24 AM
If you want to use Nero, you may need to uninstall any Roxio software you have installed like Easy Media Creator, etc. and run the Roxie Zapper:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061

I wouldn't worry about this one unless everything else fails though.

Fourth, the version of Nero you're using is fairly out of date. 6.6.0.18 seems to be the most stable version of Nero 6. To update, uninstall the current version taking care to write down the serial number and then download and run the Nero 6 Clean Tool:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Nero 6.6.0.18 (two packages) can be downloaded here:

Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe
Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Fifth, WinXP will often recognizes DVDs as CDs because it lacks native support for DVDs which is why we use 3rd party programs.

Lastly, you definitely need to maintain quite a bit of free disk space, at least 12GB in my opinion and keep the drive defragmented.

In summary, get some better quality media and try using ImgBurn to burn your ISO files and see if that resolves your problem. Then work back from there if you want to use Nero. I seldom use Nero myself since ImgBurn is superior for DVD burning.

Your burner is recognizing the media if DVD Identifier can report on it, so the problem seems to be with RecordNow.

Have you tried using another program for burning your DVDs like Imgburn or Nero? Nero is a full suite of programs buy has a trial version that lasts for a month I believe. Are you burning data DVDs or are you backing up DVDs you own? ImgBurn, along with several other free programs, are available for backing up DVDs. Nero can be used to create data DVDs. Have you tried uninstalling RecordNow and then doing a fresh reinstall? Do you have any other software like Roxio Media Creator installed?

Seems this is a pretty common problem now and it's really weird, last week I was able to burn audio CDs just fine. I decided to make another CD a couple days ago and Nero wouldn't recognize the disk, then I'd try to shut down Nero and my PC would lock up.

I'm able to burn DVDs using DVD Decryptor just fine but the second I toss in a blank CD (I'm using Phillips CD-R) and try to burn my comp bottoms out again and my DVD Drive (LiteON SOHW-1693S) makes funny beeping noises and quits. I've flashed the drive which didn't do anything.

I'm checked the registry and done pretty much everything that's been listed here and on other forums, but nothing works. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi again to all reading this thread. I just thought I would mention that in the process of my burner working/not working etc, not reading -r media. In the end, i had replaced my burner, but then the following day it stopped being recognised in the system, so my problems continued. However, just incase this is something that may help someone else out, my actual problem was Power Supply. The actual burner needed a larger power supply so now I have a cooler master RS-430-PCAR Power supply 430W (and a new dvd burner), which hopefully the rental company is going to pay for as luckily i took out an extended warranty. But anyhow, just thought you never know, it may be of use this info to someone else at some stage.

I search my way to this thread and hope I can get some help.

My DVDRW writer (16x DVD dual double layer) suddenly don't recognise blank DVD-R and DVD-RW however it still can read previously burnt data DVD and commercial movie dvd. Write and read CDRW & CDR are ok.

It come along with my Acer PC and the info I found via Device Manager is: HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B with firmware 1.01. No Nero, I'm using NTI CD & Dvd Maker Gold OEM ver.

I had tried Maxell DVD-R which is working fine before and later on HP DVD-R, Sony DVD-RW but all fail now.

Additional info:
1. uninstall drive from Device manager and reboot but it didn't help
2. Window XP explorer, DVD Decrypter, Dvd Identifier don't recognise blank DVDR as well
3. Even if it manage to recognise blank DVDR once in a blue moon, the burning will still fail.

I seldom burn DVDR and the last time I use is about 2 months ago. Please help.

Hello, suu.

You might try updating to firmware version 1.05 linked here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2279

This burner is used by several OEMs and it's difficult to find the correct firmware sometimes. I doubt the firmware update will solve the problem, but stranger things have happened.

Also try selecting a restore point back far in time when the drive worked correctly. It's possible a driver has been installed in the meantime that's conflicting.

Does the burner burn +R type disks?

Sometimes a physical uninstalling can work magic. Disconnect the data and power cables from the burner and restart your system a couple of times. Reinstall the cables and restart.

Do you have access to another system? If so, uninstall the drive from your system and install it in the other system. If it doesn't work in that system, it's likely bad, i.e., a hardware problem, and needs to be replaced. If it does work in that other system, your current system has a conflict that needs resolving. The quickest way is often to make sure your data is backed up and then reformat and reinstall the OS.

Just saw your post. Did you get your problem solved?

It's usually best to start your own thread to make sure your problem is seen and possibly addressed by as many members as possible. When you piggyback on another thread, people have to stroll through the thread to see your post which sometimes doesn't happen. Only members who have listed new post notification for this thread would have been notified of a new post back in November.

Ya I was going to start a new thread but didn't want to be flammed because there's alot of threads on this subject. But anyway! I stuck my friends DVD drive in my computer and tried that and my computer recognized the CDs I put in.

So I'm guessing the CD laser in my drive is finished and I'll have to get another drive. :(

Yes, that would seem to be the case. The good news is that unlike a few years ago when drives cost hundreds of $, new drives are now around 30USD.

I had update the firmware and now it recognise blank DVD-R but not DVD-RW which it was not really recognise before even when the drive is working fine in the past. I don't insist on the RW since I don't use and had only try 1 Sony DVD-RW and not other brand so I can't pass any comment.

Back to the DVD-R, although it can now recognise blank disc and burn to 100%, it take forever to write its Table of content till NTI give me the time out error. I can see the disc is burnt with 1 track under NTI disc info but no files are displayed under win explorer. I then try to burn only a small 50MB video file (as data dvd) and it was ok, readable and play fine. I try again at a lower 4x speed to burn a 4GB data dvd again and got a buffer under run sort of error. Is NTI not working well for me in term of burning DVDR?

Btw just a side track, few months ago I find that my previously video files in my burnt data cd & dvd had a ticking sound when playing but it play smoothly when I copy out to my hard disk however I didn't take it to heart. I was suprised this was solved when I uninstall Dvd writer drive from Device manager and reboot for the 1st time but after the update of firmware it come back again and never go away even when I uninstall. Does it indicate something?

I look under Secondary IDE Channel Properties and found my current transfer mode is not applicable, is it something to be concern of? My only writer is at location 0. Here is a screenshot.

I don't have other system to try and I am not an advance user when it come to openning up pc and work with hardwares inside :( I don't really want to reformat my PC unless my whole hard disk crash, as I have too much things to restore. Please help.

I'm not familiar with the programs you're using. As for why the current transfer mode is listed as not applicable, it may be due to using a different controller other than the standard controller or it may be the IDE channels need resetting. It won't hurt to do the latter so here are the steps:

- right click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
- Click the "+" symbol beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
- Right click on the Primary IDE Channel and select Uninstall.
- Right click on the Secondary IDE Channel and select Uninstall.

- While you're here in Device Manager, uninstall your burner again by right clicking on its name under DVD/CDROM Drives and selecting Uninstall.

- Restart your system.

Try using Ripit4me to backup commercial DVDs and see if that works better for you. It's free.

As to the ticking sound, I have no idea concerning the specific cause. It could be due to a lot of different things.

Hello, suu.

You might try updating to firmware version 1.05 linked here:
