What program is giving this error message? Is this coming when you attempt to burn a disk? Are you sure you have the same model burner as the previous member? Did you get a message saying the firmware update was successful? If the firmware updating utility gave the error message, you may not have the same model burner.

Any number of programs can ID your drive if you don't know the model number.

I'm not familiar with the programs you're using. As for why the current transfer mode is listed as not applicable, it may be due to using a different controller other than the standard controller or it may be the IDE channels need resetting. It won't hurt to do the latter so here are the steps:

- right click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
- Click the "+" symbol beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
- Right click on the Primary IDE Channel and select Uninstall.
- Right click on the Secondary IDE Channel and select Uninstall.

- While you're here in Device Manager, uninstall your burner again by right clicking on its name under DVD/CDROM Drives and selecting Uninstall.

- Restart your system.

Try using Ripit4me to backup commercial DVDs and see if that works better for you. It's free.

Riit4me: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/422740

As to the ticking sound, I have no idea concerning the specific cause. It could be due to a lot of different things.
I uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel & writer but not the primary IDE Channel as I thought it is not advisable in this Post?

I only want to burn data Dvd to store my big files, is there a good freeware around for that?

Freeware burners, but I don't vouch for any of them.

Nero has a free trial available that's fully functional:

I have tryed the dvd identifier and it does not idetify anything. As when i put a blank DVD-R or +r it does not read them spins a bit then screams and shouts b4 finally giving up.

The thing in witch i said had an error was the link you sent suu about a firmware update. No it was not sucessful as it said it failed to intialise.

Thanks bluewhits

@bluewhits

When you first startup DVD Identifier, the model and firmware version will appear under the Drive Selection and Drive Write Capabilities dropdown menu. It should be the only thing listed if you only have one drive installed. If you have more than one drive installed, select your burner from the menu and then post back exactly what's displayed.

@ bluewhits

Is there a model number behind DVD/CDRW?

I thnk you may have DVD reader and CD burner, otherwise known as a combo drive. Combo drives are usually denoted by what you provided. You can burn CDs but not DVDs with this type of drive. It will read both burned CDs and DVDs.

I have the same problem. I have had it for some time now. I burn with maxell or verbatim. It all depends on what mood by burner is in.
I uninstall my IDE's all the time. It works for awhile, but always messes up again. I even bought a new dvd combo, still to no avail.
I have a hp dvd840vj dvd writer internal. I use Clone DVD and Any DVD. Do you think that I might need new firmware. Please help.

I'm not familiar with that model. The HP 840, yes, but I've never heard of the 840vj. You should be able to go to the HP support site to locate the most up to date firmware. If you purchased this burner as part of a computer system, you may need to go to the computer manufacturers site for updates. Otherwise, just try using the 840i firmware.

Have you tried using Ripit4me? It's totally free. If it works, then the problem is likely with the other software and your system configuration. It doesn't require AnyDVD so make sure AnyDVD is disabled.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/422740

I'm assuming your AnyDVD and Clone are up to date.

You aren't trying to burn at max speed with Clone are you? If so that could be causing the problems you're having. Maxell media is not too good unless it's labeled as Made in Japan. There is also some Verbatim emdia that isn't too good that's recently out. I believe it's only in -R format.

Is DMA mode on for your burner? Here's a guide.

You can keep Clone installed. It shouldn't affect Ripit4me. AnyDVD needs to be disable though. Just right click the red fox AnyDVD icon on the task bar and uncheck the "Enable AnyDVD" by selecting it. The fox should turn gray.

Did you unzip the FixVTS file after you downloaded it. The path is pointing to the archive not the actual program file. The Ripit4me installer (see link below) should have installed FixVTS as well.

The blank DVDs you're using were made by Prodisc in the logs you posted. It's pretty low on the quality scale. The additional info you provided in the second post says the media is made by CMC Mag, also a very low quality supplier of media. The Sony D21 media is somewhat OK. However your burner is not a new one and may have difficulty with some of the 16X media even with up to date firmware. While this may not be the cause of your difficulties, it might be as well. Try to use good quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and media labeled as Made in Japan, preferably Sony or Fuji.

You migth also try creating an image (ISO) file with your authoring software and then burning that ISO image file with ImgBurn. That'd eliminate Nero from the equation as a troubleshooting item.

http://www.imgburn.com

Let us know how you make out.

If you have access to another system, try installing your burner in that system and see if it works there.

boy there are all these newbies high jacking this thread....... can't tell what person to help! anyway..... just want to comment for all who are having a problem where your drive is not recognizing a disk! I was talking to another newbie with the same problem in a different forum (Media forum) and this person had a laptop.... he/she must have put in a foreign disk which changed the REGION CODE of the drive! So when he/she put in a disk it wouldn't recognize the disk at all..... check your REGION CODE for your drive and make sure it has the appropriate REGION set! here's how:
click on MY COMPUTER/select the drive you want to check by right clicking and hit PROPERTIES/HARDWARE TAB/click the appriate drive you want to check/hit PROPERTIES button near the bottom/DVD REGION
