I'm going to start off by posting what I thought were key features though out this thread, then ask my questions in the next thread.
_________________________________________________________________________

The first a foremost is that everybody should have read the first page. To, if nothing else, have got the message of how this works. Especially thanks to "pizzag", or we wouldn't even be here.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/499497/3017630

Notice that in the picture showing the AC TO DC adapter that he is only using one that is 300mA. If you use anything higher, you run the risk of burning things up. Not that I have burned a ps3, but through the years of trial and error, I have burned alot of stuff up using the wrong amperage. Even just using batteries can be to much amperage. I think that the average AA battery holds 200mA. Put 2 of those together and you have 400mA. (This is what leads me to my number 1. question, which I will ask in the question thread.) If your wondering what amps to use. The lower the better. 100mA (100 milliamp) is lower than 1A (1amp).

Then check out "tsrps3" thread on page 4:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/499497/3121109

Which has much better pictures, and also shows a way to keep you from having to drill a hole in your ps3. He only uses the 1 switch method. I prefer to use the 2 switch method. (one 4pole switch, and an on off on switch)

Which comes the next thread on page 17, Thanks to "alien1201"
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/499497/3323770

I just like the idea that you can't forget where you are as far as original settings or manual, and that way you can't burn any boards. I've seen in alot of the videos that is in this thread, that people can't seem to remember what their settings switch is in. They flip the switch, then flip it back, before they eject, or after.

Then I really like how people found ways to make the switch(s) look good. Like putting it into the "PS3 FAN" that "alien1201" did, or the "PS3 Air Flo Cooler" that "ChokeDYou" used on page 6:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/499497/3152115

Even though the "PS3 Air Flo Cooler" isn't selling so well because of the sounds it makes, but it does look good. Then I read somewhere in here, (no offense if I don't reference to it) not to use the fan because they will blow dust into your unit and cause it to decompose after awhile. No offense, but any idiot knows that you are suppose to clean out your electronics after 6 months to a year anyways with an air compressor, a can of air that you buy at an office supply store, or a paint brush if you don't have the air. And if your really so worried about the fan putting dust into your unit then get an air filter, put it between the fan, and the unit. The filter would probably only run you an extra usd .25 cents. Get one of those filters for smokeless ashtrays. It might prolong the life of the fan, and the unit. The fan probably wouldn't make as much noise either.
________________________________________________________________________

The next subject after the "making of the mod" I think should be about the time it takes to swap discs. Now let me point out that as later on as this thread progressed, no one is reading the entire post. It took me well over 24 hours to read them all. All 501 threads, or so on. (yes I'm a slow reader, but I like to get all the details)
The point I am about to make is this: No one has said that they have screwed up their unit due to taking out the disc too early.
The problems started when "Spender85" on page 4 stated:
Originally posted by Spender85:

and on page 7 "loglog84"
Originally posted by loglog84:

and will it scratch the Blueray laser by any chance?

Any one that has a portable CD player and looked in it while it was playing knows that the lens NEVER touches the disc. (and yes there was a problem with disc getting scratched on ps2's due to the lens chamber, but the lens never touched the disc, and alot of ps2 games and ps2's got replaced due to the mishaps) So therefore you can't scratch your lens with ejecting your disc.
Then EVERYBODY toward the end of this post must have read this thread from "viks" on page 8, and paniced:

First, i would like to give Pizzag congratulations for his creativity, but i need to WARNING everybody that this swap mod kills the Blue Ray Laser unit.I´m a PSX and PS2 Modder for quite some years, and when i first read this post i was so glad, that i run to buy a PS3 unit. After i get home, i start to mod my ps3,open it and installed the swap switch and the originalmode/swap mode switch.i try it with the PS3 disassembled.Every thing went fine, but then i get worry when i saw the Laser unit injecting power to the coils tryng to focus something in the drive, when there wasen´t anything there.

Example:

-In Swap mode switch, put the original game inside.
-turn on the machine and wait the media to get recognized.
-turn the switch mode into eject
-the original game comes out BUT THE LASER START´S CLICKING TRYING TO READ SOMETHING THAT ISN´T THERE.
-THIS IS WRONG.the laser coils starts to burn for the increasing of power that it receives.this power increasing isn´t dangerous when it takes less then 1 second, in fact this result in focus or tracking way to work. But never more then 0.5 sec.

In the first and second batch of the PS2 Slim (V12), there was this problem.Sometimes the PS2 crashed out and the laser starts tryng to focus/trcking and this amount of power totaly burned the unit.Every body knows this, it was caled the Mechacon Crash.

I Stoped using the Swap mode by the time i cheked the Laser spinning up and down tracking the media that wasn´t there anymore.

This is for sure the problem that maked Pizzag Laser unit Burning, since he uses this mod for a longer time then others.

Im realy Sorry for my bad english, but i realy needed to WARN everybody for this bad/danger solution.

Be well.
Then this quote that came from "tsrps3" on page 8:

Pizzag laser didn't burn out. A chip burned out due to mis-swapping a blu-ray with a DVD. As I quote him from page 12:
Originally posted by pizzag:

Quote me if I'm wrong, but where in this post does it say that somebodies lasers got killed when they switched without waiting, and I quote from "David891" on page 19:
Originally posted by David891:

So in this standby mode since its not actually reading anything, you would think as far as the laser goes it would be safe to swap the discs since the laser isnt doing any actual work at that point, correct? I know the disc is still spinning, but thats a risk that is minor to take in my opinion, im just more focused on the laser issue here.

Were not sure if there is a standby mode or something like that, but we do know that some ps3 lasers got killed when they switched without waiting. What you do is up to you but if you want to be sure you dont kill your laser you better wait 8:30 minutes (tip: put screensaver on 10 minutes and then you know you can switch safely).

The way I built it in requires 2 wholes drilleng inside the cardreader, so when you turn down the black thing you almost cant see I modded ps3
I understand that people would like to keep a precaution, fore the ps3 not cheap, but telling stories to people that aren't true makes them wonder how good your word is, No offense. Then they are going to start wondering if you have actually done this. Your insight seem pretty good, mostly. No ps3 have been damaged due ejecting yet. Quote me if I'm wrong.

and also someone correct me if I'm wrong,
you have to have this formula for playing backups

Blue Ray ??? don't know for sure
and I still haven't had time to check the playability of PSX yet....anyone ???

Hope that helps.

Yes, I know I quoted him/her twice.
_________________________________________________________________________

I know that reading 500+ threads is really too much to read and most people would just rather skim through a thread that highlights the good stuff. I hope I have helped with that. If you have a problem, I suggest that you do read all, or most of the 20 pages that are before this one.
Most questions have been answered, it's just finding them. Most of them are between pages 1-8.

I now need alittle sleep, then I will ask my questions. Which I think one of the answers should have been in the very first page.

How do you keep a ***** in suspense??? Tell you tomorrow.

Enjoy,

Fyi, the amperage of the batteries depend on the method you connect the batteries, There is series and parallel. If you line the batteries up correctly, you can keep them at 200mAh.

Look it up on Google, I'm just trying to clear up some common misconceptions about electricity. Cant get double the voltage and double the amps, there is give and take. If you want double the voltage, then you get normal amps; double amps, normal voltage.

do or do not, there is no try...
only the sith think in black and white...

these quotes confuse me, as the first is black and white and is spoken by a jedi master... is Obi Wan saying Yoda is one with the sith?? o_O

first i want to thank i pizzag. man, ur a genius. anyway, im having a little trouble. i have read and followed every bit of advice from this thread, and indeed the switch works perfectly. BUT when i use the original function ( i did the 2 switch method) it takes me 5 tries to get the dvd to read. the system catches it but it doesn't go all the way back in the drive. just goes in and then theres a bunch of scratching noises... the weird thing is sometimes it works. anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Ok, here's what you gotta do.

Go to radioshack or a similar electronic store and buy a device that holds 2 AA batteries with a red and black wire sticking out (2 AA's 3 volts total).

Now if you want to have a switch to switch between the normal ps3's power and your batteries, you have to extend the ps3's power wires that are connected to the motor by default, and then have your battery pack's red and black wire and the wires you extended hooked up to a 2 way switch.

What I did was just remove the 2 default power wires and taped the copper ends together and just put the battery pack's wires onto the motor instead. The only disadvantage is I have to use the batteries power every time I change a disc no matter what unless I solder back on the original wires.

Hope this helps you out.

Thank you..
One thing though before I start working on this mod. Does the original game have to be as the same region as the PS3. I have NTSC/J PS3 but I don't have any NTSC/J PS2 games at the moment, so when I put a NTSC/U game in the PS3, it read it as a PS2 game but wont play it. Will it work for the swap??

I know as far as the mod goes, it will work, because the goal is to trick the ps3 into thinking there is an original ps2 game inside the ps3.

But as far as it playing backed up games that don't match the region of the system, not entirely sure on that one... I think I read a reply in this forum about a different region disc being booted. You may want to review this thread again.

I think it probably will work.
Cause the ps3 only has to think there is a ps2 game in the console, and when you get a yellow disc with ''Playstation 2 game'', that has to be enough.

But what do you exactly mean with you switched disc wothout the mod?
Cause a switch without mod doesnt do anything, then it only tries to read the last disc, and I dont know what game that was? cause maybe that game isnt supported on playstation.

I opened my PS3 and opened the Drive, and inserted the game [FFX US]. The PS3 read the disc as PS2 disc [yellow disc icon] but if I start it, it wont play duo to region restriction. so after the disc stop spinning [after the 8mins and 30secs], I switched the disc [removed the first and placed the other as the drive cover is removed as I said] and started the second game [FFXII US/backup] and the same message appeared [the region restriction one].
I also tried another game [FFXII International Jap/backup] but didn't work also.
Also I have MGS3 Pal but didn't tried it.

zee5 of course you need an original that matches the region of your console to initiate the swap.
I have a jap PS3 and I use jap original DevilMayCry ps2 game to boot all my other imports/backups PS2 games.

And if you are going to buy a NTSC game you better buy a game with as large as possible TOC. Cause a original can only load games with same or lower TOC. Search google for toc sizes.
I use GTA Vice City wich has about 4,35 GB TOC but there are games with 4,37 TOC.

Wow this looks like an outstanding mod. I have a 60gb machine myself and the warranty has been over for a year so I can mod if I please.

I do have a question though, does swapping DVD's work on 2.10> firmware patches? Or, is it only for 1.51 and/or the lower patches. I read this thread all over and I couldn't find that question being asked or answered.

Thanks.

by dvds did you mean ps2 game dvds?
so...
this awnser assumes that you meant ps2 dvd games.

Yeah, I have the same PS3 as you do, thats great news!

I was refering to the PS2 games being swapped for the backup game DVD's. I should use DVD9 right? Any special burning speeds or special formats? If theres a thread out there that has this info, i'm sure i'll find it if you don't want to say.

Well I use DVD+R 4.7 GB. I think that there DVD5. but if the game size is larger than 4.7 then you will have to use DVD-/+R DL DVD9 which i believe that that's fine.
That's what i use but i found others have recommended that you use DVD-R (i dont know the difference) and that you use a low burning speed (like 4x seems to be ok) and DVD-/+ RW do not work. There are probably more other factors and al but it seems to work for me im not to worried.

If im wrong anyone or missed out an important factor then feel free to correct me.

It works on 2.10 and it probably will work on 2.17 (or whatever name was, came out today). Cause this hack isnt really big so I dont think sony really bother for coupele ps2 backups. So I think there wont be a firmware that disables this (but there will if anyone finds a way to load ps3 backups using swap).

And about the DVD9 and DVD5.
Original ps2 DVD5 --> only swap with backed up dvd5
Original ps2 DVD9 --> only swap with backed up dvd9

I'm not sure but swapping dvd5 with dvd9 or dvd9 with dvd5 will not work or maybe even damage system.

yeah David is right.
Only swap with the same kind of media or you will kill the laser.
(Swap dvd5 backups with dvd5 originals, and dvd9 backups with dvd9 originals)

Who's trying 2.17 first this time?
I'm bored being the guinea pig ^^;
