marsey,

they're around here and there but mostly limited to oem/tray vs. I think I'll wait for a retail vs and the price to drop a bit. I want the 3 year warranty.

The Q9450 is in mainstream stock in the UK, both OEM and Retail now... Scan are offering it with Assassins Creed for free: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductIn...roductID=743028
An interesting idea seeing as AC is probably one of the games that would need it most.

What is the socket and current cpu? Download CPU-Z and it will tell you the socket type and other info about the cpu. A screenshot of CPU-Z would be great.

1234aaron,

On your Acer Aspire SA-10. First it's socket 478 with a 4X AGP video slot and only supports a 533 Front Side Buss. Here's the specs. I doubt that there's a CPU available for it today as the modern P4s and Celerons won't work in it. You'll have to check with Acer on that!

http://www.acer.com.au/acer/akc/rwpattac...10_Brochure.pdf

Not to rain on your parade, from what I see from the specs, it's a bit like a tired old used car! Time to jack up the License Plates and drive a new car under them! LOL!! You just have nothing to work with! You would have to replace so much just to make it as good as you can and you still wouldn't have very much to work with. The 200 watt power supply is at best, inadequate. These were some of the cheapest computers that money could by when they were new, and there's not really much you can do to improve it!

Sorry,
Russ

Hey guys, I'm after some info on thing's I shouldn't do when overclocking. I just overclocked for my first time, my Pentium D from 3ghz to 3.325ghz. I had it at 3.75ghz, and it crashed after 10 mins.

Any tips on heat range, and maximum over clocking?

as for heat, get a good heatsink or better yet get water cooling
for the max oc, every chip is different and so all chips overclock differently
i am pretty sure that if you bump up the voltage, you will get it stable at 3.75ghz but make sure you have a good heatsink to get rid of the extra heat created by the over voltage.
-good luck

When I had it at 3.75, my temp was only 42degrees celcius. With the voltage thing, I don't wanna upmy voltage incase I fry my CPU. Any tips on how much I should up the voltage by?

I had my D-940 to 3.84 stable, but I found out later that even though it passed OCCT for 12 hours, it wouldn't complete the work units folding! I had it as high as 3.94 but couldn't quite get it stable. I settled on 3.71 as I was pushing the technology of a P5P800 SE motherboard to it's limits any faster! I wouldn't go past 1.40v with it. Use the voltage that shows in the PC Health part of the setup. Stay under 1.40v and it will run for a very long time! Still, I'm glad I built mine! I built mine when everyone else was building AMDs! LOL!! It was a worthy replacement for an aging Prescot 3.0/800 and a nice machine to boot. I also got a crash course in the economics of buying cheap components. I, like so many before me learned that lesson the hard way! LOL!!

Best Regards,
Russ

Ja, it's a pin mod and has been used since the E6600. But it is really a budget fix for a mobo that doesnt allow for any BIOS options to OC. The mobo does have to support 1333 natively cause you are using auto to get it there as a trick. I did it then for fun, but some mobos dont know how to handle it and or some CPU's cant do the 1066 vcore at 1333 on certain mobo's. But it is fun to play with.

if i use 400mhz for my CPU (3.6ghz) and then the 2.4 multi for the mem. would give me a 960 thats a pretty good OC i would think. but is it safe?
Most good brand RAM can do that easily at 2.2v and that is safe for modern RAM and just monitor temps and keep cool. Add a fan if you feel it gets warmer then usual. Better RAM as top end stuff like Crucial, OCZ, and Corsiar can do 1066 easily w/ barely a tad more vDIMM. Loosen timings of corse and even maybe the tfc if aloowed. If using higher density modules, might ned more volts to the NB too.

Wow, I guess it is just luck of the draw. I had my D-940 to 4GHz daily on the 12x and my D-950 (C1) currently to 4.25 daily but benched 4.55GHz just for kicks @ 1.37v. Now on the nVidia nf4-SLI I couldn't get past 3.78 on the 12x only on the high multi. moved back to the then new P5WDG2-WS !955X.

Considering that the P5P800 SE wasn't originally made with Dual Cores in mind and was beefed up in the later revisions with heavier VRMs to support them, 4.0GHz was no problem! Requiring over 1.40v to do it, was! It took 1.42v for 4.0GHz, and you had to keep an eye on the temps, which was too high a voltage for me. My limit for those CPUs is 1.40v! It really needed water cooling, which isn't an option for me as I don't want any water inside my PC! The Fusion blocks on the High End Asus boards have a well documented history of leaks, so if Asus can't deliver a leak free product to the consumer for the outrageous price of the Striker II Extreme MB, I'm not about to go mucking around on my own and risk what I have because of a leak!

Fry's Electronics local in store sale. They were normally $349.00 I think or maybe it was w/ the mobo. I got the retail box only, no mobo. Rare for them to "sale" them like that. I never use the mobos they through in anywayz.

I am barely running it today for the 1st time. It feels nice but just trying to get the feel of the vcore range. For basic tets run I'm at 425x8 in 1:1 @ 1.29 vcore and 1.616v PLL BIOS reports 4 cores averaged to 33c but everest keeps reporting 45con #4 and 55c on 1~3. It reported this since stock FSB (333) & vcore of 1.19v and same PLL. core Temp say the same. are they now updated still? I am on Everest Ultimate 4.50.1330. CoreTemp shows Tj Max to be 107c Is that right? Interesting!

Otherwise, gonna do some more shortly. It feels nice even if it isnt up to where my Q6600 was. Even under full load I can barelyt feel pipes at base of my TR120 get warm to tough and can barely tell from tips off top. Not bad in the heat dpt for sure.

That's a guesstimate by CoreTemp! Intel wouldn't release the Tj Max so it's an educated guess on CoreTemp's part! LOL!! I read about this a while back. I thought I posted it!

i thought it was 105?

best way to find out is let it heat up till it throttles itself, then you know exactly where your limits are.

Well, it's day 7 and got around to the FSB test and it looks to hit the wall at 455FSB but still working on settings. I have a newer BETA BIOS v0401 for the Rampage Formula to try and see if it helps. It appears to play fine w/ Ballistix Tracers on X48 dispite the bad rap it gets for X38/X48. I just dont really know the "quote" overclockers comfort zone for vcore. I ran it up to 1.448v while still on 450FSB and only hit 39c idle (4 cores averaged), but I am on first hrs of TIM break in. So far it seams to like 425x8 on 1.288v and much lower FSBT of 1.37v and CPU GTL ref of 63%.

You have no idea how much better off and lucky you are! LOL!! I was standing in line to check out one time and noticed a guy standing there with what I was pretty sure was the same exact hard drive I had returned 20 minutes or so earlier because it was defective. I had all the paperwork on me and it turned out to be the same defective drive Fry's just threw back on the shelf without testing, and sold again! They do that all the time in Anaheim! Fry's gives new meaning to the words "Buyer Beware"! ROFL!! They also specialize in "Customer Indignity"! Exiting the store after you've checked out is known here in California as "The Final Indignation", as Security gives you a final going over before they let you out the door! They will physically prevent you from leaving the store until they decide you're "clean"!

If you think I'm kidding, read here, and try not to laugh too hard as it's both a tragedy and a comedy! ROFLMAO!!

yes, my bad, tj- max is reporting 105c not 107. I did load test it to what Everest shows as 75c highest core and 70c low and it never throttled. It also didnt get anywhere near as warm at the base and end of heat pipes my Q6600 at 70c So my guess so far, is it;s not 75cI even lowered the fan to 800RPM and only went up 1c (I was only on 1200 before w/ 1600 highest) Sythe S-Flex. This is the recent Core Temp as of last month v0.98 as of 04-24-08.

About Fry's, our Bay area stores only peak in half lazy half the time so the can hurry unless the snooperviser is standing accross the walk. I had 3 bags full of items with 2 types of sales slips and the girl was able to see and check everything in 1 sec. Lol! One time they just waved OK as if they could tell as I was comeing toward the door like with x-ray vision. Pretty high tech.

I been going to Fry's since it was a back room shop and they still sold "white" labeled generic beer up front in the regular Fry's Market. Lol! Yup, they sodl food first then electronic stuff. I got my 1st DFI when it was a local plain white box, bottom shelf special.
