Not for RB you don't, I remember when you first got started and it was a good couple of months after the rest of us did and that would make it around August of 2004.

Though some may disagree, there was recording software before RB. LOL It took some of the earlier betas to finally work out enough bugs that the software would work properly on my system. I was one of those who suffered from the notorious buffer problems that were associated with the earlier betas. For a while there were those who didn't think I had the app set up properly. That wasn't the case and the solution came along later with updated betas. I'm sure you remember helping me get it set up to where it would work a little bit until the updated app fixed my problems. If you have it logged as to the start of the thread and when I got started, you've probably got little reminders for most other occurrences. ;)

Since I had good luck making a backup with CCE I decided to try the Qenc again and the file size came out the same, too large. Also, when I previewed it had the same freezing problem with Video_TS 2 all the rest appeared fine. Am trying the HC again but that will take hours, to find out if the same problem with the picture will happen. Is it something on my computer that is causing this, are there programs that RB has conflicts with?

No known conflicts with the supported encoders and transcoders I'm aware of. CCE and the free HC work well with RB. My recommendation is to buy the CCE Basic or use the HC encoder. Basic is nearly the same as SP for use with RB, except the Basic is limited to 2 passes.

I will probably go with the basic, hate the logo on the screen, since CCE seems to work. Will see if I can get HC to work, otherwise I guess I will be limited to CCE.

Well here I am four hours later and the output file from HC was just as bad as yesterday's totally unplayable.

Have you tried a different DVD? Something is wrong and it would be nice to try and find out if it is the source.

Am using Pirates of the Caribbean which I ripped with Decrypter. I wanted to try out CCE Basic so I would know if it worked out before I bought it, so I uninstalled and reinstalled everything accept the CCE 2.5 and installed the Basic Trial. Which does not work at all. I just get Unknown encoder, cannot find path and the abort. Is this just something that won't work for me? The copy I did get done doing Pirates with CCE 2.5 came out beautiful accept for the logo and I only used 1 pass.

arniebear,
I don't think the trial vs of CCE basic will work with dvd-rb as it will only allow you to encode a few minutes. Also under mode uncheck enable output directory. This will put the temporary files and distination folder all in the same folder. You won't have to worry about destination only the work path and you won't have to set up individual folders for each. I would go ahead and buy CCE basic. I'm sure these guys can get you set up and working.

Okay, will purchase CCE Basic tonight when I get home, hope it works. My wife wants(and don't everyone get sick at once) The Michael Flatley Collection backed up, so I am dead meat if I can't get this going.

Arniebear,
If the CCE SP trial worked, then Basic will work. Mort was correct, the Basic Trial times out so is unusable for any decent trial purposes. Don't know why they even release that trial. Just load the Basic Retail and set up the path in Options -> Setup and go. Run it with the default settings until you learn what the controls do.

I'm using DVD-RB 0.94 and CCE SP 2.70.02.01 and avisynth 2.55
I have DVD files made from Tivo extracted files. Its in PAL interlaced.
Using Nero Showtime, it plays fine.
I tried DVD-RB but the result is like its been scrambled and totally unwatchable.
I loaded the item.ecl in CCE without DVD-RB and tried just that one cell. It was still garbled.
I loaded the item.ecl file in CCE by itself, ticked a few boxes (like close GOP etc) and ran, it. The output is fine !
So avisynth and CCE seems to be fine, however, the ecl file produced by DVD-RB doesn't seem to work. I compared the ecl file from DVD-RB against my 'new' ecl file and they look completely different. What is going on.
Should I post the two ecl files for examination by the experts here?
thanks.

You're leaving out a lot of detail. I didn't think the Tivo MPEG output is DVD compliant? What is the resolution? Also -- you had to do some type of preprocessing because Tivo files aren't in DVD format...

arniebear,
I knew you'd get it figured out. How long was your encode time?

It was 147 minutes, is that good or bad, been pricing new computer. This program is getting expensive and addictive. I side by side compared the finished product with the original and there was no visible difference that I could see. Needless to say I was impressed.

A little slow if you're used to a fast processor, but not by too much. You won't get any great increases. With a typical up to date processor, you're looking at around 2 hours (give or take) for most encodes using CCE Basic with RB. Sophocles has been using an overclocked AMD with interesting results, he may want to comment. I've noticed that usually RB/CCE is as fast or faster than Shrink with the "Quality" settings in use, if that is any kind of indicator. In the case of RB/CCE, the cost of quality seems to be related to a trade off in processing time. Most of us think it's worth the time to get high quality output on our favorites.

Right now I have a Pentium4 2.4 and am looking at comp with a 3.4. The encoding took a little over 2 hours and the rebuild was about 14 minutes.

You'd notice a decent improvement at 3.0 and the 3.4 should shave some time off. However, the 3.4 is still at a premium compared to the 3.0. Personally, I'd go for the 3GB processor and put the extra money into increased RAM. That is unless you have the extra money and can buy the fastest processor and a full compliment of RAM without it hurting the bank. In that case, do you need a new best friend? LOL

You may want to experiment with the Decoder iDCT setting. Sometimes you can squeeze some extra speed out of that.

Good luck, I tried it and couldn't see any noticable difference with the P4 I have in use.

What kind of processor was it that Sophocles recently picked up that showed such an improvement?

Was looking at putting 2g of Ram in, can't afford the 4g. I figured if I was going to get a new one I would get the bigger processor and video card.

Hmm... (picture me dreaming of a high end machine). My problem is that I need to do all my encoding on a mid-level machine so I can get a realistic feel for how the average machine will perform. Well... that and also the fact that I'm exceptionally poor. :(
