Yes, but I don't know what the differences are in them. I've asked uncaSMs for a hint on how to identify them but he hasn't responded yet. If it was just me I'd look the movie over and if the angles are of no relevance then I'd strip them with DVDremake and move on.

When I get them I'll let you know how it works.

Interestingly, there are others who have successfully backed up the R2 PAL Alien discs. I did a lot of work on that when the ILVU code was first released back in July. There's a whole thread on it over at Doom9.

Thanks for all the replies gents. I feel like an idiot. I double checked my steal space from extras and although I didn't select it, it had 10% checked. Must have happened with last update hmm. Guess I better start looking things over a little better after each update. Oh well still good info. Thanks.

I've heard of the successes of others backing it up and since I haven't tried it yet either, I'll wait until I do and then I'll post m results. Perhaps uncaSMs missed something out of the ordinary, we all do.

The R1 Alien was a breeze. Any problems would have to arise from a difference with DVDs made for other regions. With some people enjoying success, I'm a bit suspicious as to the cause. If it was a flaw in the program, it doesn't seem plausible it would work for some and not others. I'll leave that testing to those with access and more bucks to buy the additional DVDs. Anybody want to send me an R2 copy, I'll be glad to check it out. ;)

Hi all,

Okay after reading all the raves about RB/CCE I decided to take the plunge. I had tried a few months back to get it setup but had difficulties with CCE. This time since I had done a reformat I went by UncasMS guide, and put AviSynth in first and then CCE 2.5 and then used the Rockas installer it setup well. I then opened a file that had been recorded on my Panasonic E80H Recorder from TMC. Because the movie was over 2 hours I had to use the LP mode so this compresses the file over 50%, and it will only take up half of a single layer disk. Because the quality was not that good I decided to run it through RB. When I opened RB it stated something about the file already being small enough to fit on a single layer, did I want to proceed, and I stated yes. RB/CCE did their thing, and I burned the file to disk. When I played it on my standalone the bottom half of the picture was black and the upper half showed scramble video, it had great sound however. What did I do wrong, can you not use RB on small file sizes? I figured I would try it again with a normal DVD movie, not a recorded one and see how it works. Just wanted to know if the bad video was file related or if I have something wrong in the way RB/CCE is setup. Thanks

You're trying to use the app as a copying tool to clean up an already bad recording that had been previously transcoded. Since CCE is an encoder, if you put bad in, you get bad out. There are filters, but they're intended for use during the encoding process. RB is intended for use with encoders and transcoders to deliver a high quality encode, especially under high compression. With no compression any copy tool can copy what you had. Doing a DVD backup instead of trying to copy a track recorded with your Panasonic E80H recorder would give you a better insight into what RB/CCE is all about.

Can't say that myself. Having used RB, once it is set up, it can be used with one button and default settings to encode a movie much as other transcoders. It lends itself to tweaking if one is into that as well. With the Rockas installer, there is no mystery in how to set it up and no real need for a guide. One just has to remember to install Avisynth 2.5.5 and the encoder or transcoder of choice before running the installer. At least the Avisynth has to be installed first. The path to the executable file for the encoder can be added in Setup once the RB program is installed. However, if EclCCE is needed with an older version of CCE, it is easiest to let the Rockas installer do the installation for you and that entails having the CCE already installed. Same applies for ProCoder and EclPro. RB now has DVD Decrypter as a supported burner, so it can function much like DVD Shrink. You can compare function, but RB/CCE is far superior in overall quality.

I should have been paying more attention to the updates, when did that come along? Definitely a handy addition. Even another spot where the novice can't go wrong. Starting to look like the help thread is going to be relegated to telling users not to make the wrong setting selections. If left at default, there's nowhere to go wrong there either. How long before a user guide will be installed in the program to outline proper usage? It could be put in PDF format to save space (the Adobe reader is free).

There's a help file that you can download from the DVD Rebuilder site. I'll send it to you, just place it in the folder with RB.

Thanks, but I wasn't saying I needed help at the present time. I was wondering when a user guide would be included in the app so new owners of the program wouldn't have to go looking for it. I guess I might be able to learn something from that guide you mentioned. There could be something I missed, I don't know everything. I can get to http://www.dvd-rb.com myself to save you the trouble. Anybody else needing to visit the rebuilder site can use the link as well.

Here is the link to download that help file, Help Files v.0.8. http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=50 On looking it over it could be helpful to those new to the app. For myself and people using the app for a while, there doesn't seem to be anything new.

Thanks, but I'd already downloaded it and looked it over. It's not that large and it's definitely not comprehensive as far as the controls go. However, for the novice, it does hit on the basics fairly well.

I thought the help file was pretty complete as far as the novice is concerned and there are some advanced settings in it as well.

Guess we agree there. I'd like to see a guide with all the controls explained and what will happen when/if they're changed. For tweaking purposes, I'd like to know if there are preferred settings for a particular processor, such as the Decoder iDCT settings. The default was MMX XVID. Now the list shows that and a Decoder Default. That one with the combinations still has me wondering. I'd like to see all the AVS settings explained along with the Advanced Options found farther down the list. I'd like to see a guide covering all the controls on the program. Granted, many are self explanatory. If so, just give a short description and move on. For those that aren't, an explanation of controls and how it works would be nice. Information is all over the forums, various threads and posts. It would save a bunch of searching and posting to have all the info on controls in one repository. Plus, one would know what info is available and what isn't. In other words, I'd like to see a comprehensive HELP guide.

I think that this is where things get interesting. A lot of the settings that you mentioned are not a part of RB but rather a part of the other apps that RB makes use of. For instance the idct settings are features of the DGDecode.dll which is extracted from DGMPGDec, and the controls in RB come from there. Perhaps studying DGMPGDec will shed some light on it.

The purpose of DVD-RB is to try and simplify all this -- by not making you have to know all this stuff. DVD-RB analyzes the source and sets them up for you and you never have to worry about them.

If, however, someone decides they want to tweak -- that's completely possible with DVD-RB, that's why it's set up the way it is. But, if a person decides he or she wants to get down into the weeds it gets really, really complicated... and they have to do some research because even a 5,000 page manual wouldn't be enough. For example the AVS file is describing AVISYNTH which has about 50 pages just for it's base functions -- and it doesn't include the several hundred filters available. How would I go about explaining the differences between color spaces like YUY2 and YV12 to a novice or what it means to separate fields?

I'm happy with the basic RB settings and options as they are, I can't see anything that I would get out of them that's worth all the extra time and effort.

Guess you missed the humor in the statement with the smilie wink. I was just being intentionally facetious. As jdobbs and everyone points out, it is set to work fine with the default settings. I've had no problems and not really looking for any. I think I'll pass on the Avisynth guide and just go with the RB in default.

I just woke up and there is a dialog that says 'cce encoding failed.'

The message is: VBR VBV ovf frame# 131991 (01:31:39:17) 25316 max 23592.27 pln 21844.69 rel 1723.73 1.07 qsv 96.00->95.99

Now, I did join two AVIs then save it as another AVI, and that is what CCE was encoding. However, the first AVI didn't end at 1 hour and 31 minutes..

I am using CCE SP v2.67.00.27.
