What an assinine thing to say on a board where so many of us are warning others not to buy a piece of electronic equipment. I mean damn.
I don't recall anyone saying that ILO recorders were bad because they weren't made in the U.S. -- they're bad because THEY'RE CRAP -- and having been through three of them myself (two MU units and one ZU), most of you reading this loving these little hunks of garbage right now will experience failure. Soon. If you have $100 to waste, go for it. Toss the receipts, the box, in fact go build a new entertainment/home theater wing onto your house just to showcase the ILO-05 DVD recorder. Enjoy.
Most of us don't have $100 to flush down the public restroom toilets at Wal-Mart but if you do then congratulations! Those of us firing off the warnings (and alternatives) are only trying to help those of YOU doomed to be left holding 20-30 unfinalized and unusable "BAD DISCS" a month or six down the line when your 05 either forgets what DVDs are, or overheats itself into oblivion. It will happen to 98% of you and I am unanimous in that (LOL).
What you're forgetting is (1) anything branded "ILO" failed quality inspections and functionality tests (by CyberHome or Lite-On, for example) and got sold to Wal-Mart/Sam's Club for literally CENTS on the dollar and rebranded and sold at full price. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. This is how they operate today.
And (2) When you return one of these recorders to Wal-Mart, guess what happens? If it's "ILO" branded it gets put right back on the shelf for re-sale. All three of my returns (and all were returned because they stopped working, as noted on my refund slips) within an hour were back on the shelf. I watched, waited, and saw it happen. The final one wasn't even bothered to have it's box re-taped. Nice huh? And just a little MORE "FYI", if and when it gets returned a SECOND time, then it gets marked down for clearance.
How dare anyone blame ILO problems on "user error" after all of these warnings from all of these different people. How frigging dare you?! You just effectively told the rest of us that we wasted our time trying to help YOU, and you insulted us while you did it. Nice.
My final thoughts on this are (1) you were warned; and (2) you'll remember this little debacle down the road when you wish you had your $100 back. You have options now, you won't later.
P.S. MERRY CHRISTMAS! Something else you didn't get with your ILO recorder.

I have two units a dvdr04 and a dvdhd04 and I have not had any problems with either unit except for the first hd04 i bought it was defective and I returned it and got a nother one and its great even tho there have been problems with these units it comon in the electronic worald to get bad things heck I have a TV thats 23 years old and plays great and one tv that quit working after five years . If everything was made to last forever people wouldnt buy anything new.......
but thats just my two cents worth

WELL I GUESS IAM LUCKY ! MY ILO DVDRHD04 $269 HAS WORKED PERFECT FOE ALMOST A YEAR NOW! MY UNCLE HAS TWO OF THE SAME AND WE BOTH WORK THESE THINGS TO DEATH RECORDING EVERY DAY! THESE WERE MADE BY LITEON
AND THE CHEAP DR05 ONES ARE MADE BY CYBERHOME. THE SAME UNIT WALMART SELLS IS SOLD AT TARGET AND OTHER STORES UNDER THE NAME CYBERHOME.
I SUSPECT THT THIS LINE OF RECORDERS FOR $89-$100 ARE NOT VERY RELIABLE AS THE POST LATELY HAVE SHOWN. I THINK THER ARE SOME HIGH END RECORDERS OUT THERE THAT ARE WORTH LOOKING IN TO.

GOOFUS you are so right. I had an ILO that would record and then not recognize the disc. Went through a stack of 50 with about 5 working. Carried it back and got a CyberHome which I knows makes ILO but it has worked fine so far. I have my fingers crossed. When I quits it's going in the garbage and I'll never by electronics from Walmart again. Just bought an HD tv and went to Best Buy. I'm one of those people that shops Walmart out of neccessity. I hate the place. The worst thing that ever happened to America. We did have a K Mart until Walmart ran it out of town. Sam Walton never saw this coming with his stores I bet. When he was alive the place was totally different.

Just brought home my new ilo 05zu. I was looking to buy a Pioneer model but there was none on the shelves. Salesman asked why I wanted that model. Said the -r's (pioneers format)have been known to drop info. Went on to explain how the ilo is made by lite on and I should't have any reservations about purchasing the product. Store has sold some 200 units and only had 1 return and that was from an older man who had problems with the technology. Also told me he gets no kickback as he's part time or retired or something. Told me the warranty is 1 year and the store (walmart of course) takes returns for ninety days. Then he went on to tell me that if I do have a problem I should inform him so that he knows.I did however have reservations about it but decided to save the extra $80 dollars and buy some two way radios. The reservations were what brought me to this website (research after purchase). I'am going to utilize the return policy and use the product (if it works) until I can thoroughly research dvd recorders. I hate products that have quirks and will find a more recommended product. Until then I will report any problems or success. I enjoyed reading all the reports and appreciate that everyone has different opionions.

FYI--I struggled, as you did, for a good machine at a reasonable price. I finally got a Lite On LVW 5104 DRDRecorder from RadioShack, and though they are $200, I got it for $150, as they have rebates, sales, etc quite often, and I had signed up for their email announcements on their website.
Results? Thoroughly impressed and satisfied. It records anything on oany media, plays anything, even stuff I do on my PC. I love it! Jim

hi, im new but i was wondering, i just bought an ilo dvdr05 recorder, and a lot of my disks come out "damaged", so it says im using DVD-R disks, do i need DVD+R? has anyone had this problem?

If you just bought your ILO take it back asap. If it started this way it will never get any better. It will just go down hill. I took my ILO back and got a Cyberhome. So far no problems. Get rid of this machine now. You will hate you ever bought it. Just read this foram.

I've had my HD04 for some time now without any problems. Using the hacked firmware.
I have not recorded to DVD+R or +RW for some time though. I decided to offload some things from HD to DVD and found that I was getting many of the same problems that others report - not able to finalize if I could record, not recognizing disks, not even playing back a +RW that I had recorded months ago.
Took the top cover off of the unit and then the top cover off of the DVD drive. Cleaned the lense with a few q-tips and windex, put it back together and it works just like day one.
This is easy to do for even the inexperienced and I suggest it if you are having these problems. Just be sure that you don't apply much pressure on the lense mechanism.

I have a DVDR05. This is my second unit the first one was a chunk of junk. Returned it to Walmart and got another. So far (knock wood) this one works fine. Different software on this unit but getting used to that. This version of the software has more features then what was on the old unit. My question is how do I copy dvd's. I mean the ones that I have made of my home movies. I want to copy them for friends and family. I have saved all the videos as different titles so I can name them and have a menu. How do I copy the dvd and still have all the titles?. Hopefully I dont have to go through all of the hassle of saving each title, naming it, etc.

I bought the ILO 05 , summer 2005, worked about 1 month. took 3 months to get the CD update from ILO service center. Took 2 weeks for each email response. It worked for about 2 months. Then it started causing freezes on the discs I made. bought a Lite-on 5005....it's okay so far. I use the ILO to play my PAL DVDS, and then I record them using the Liteon. See, the ILO is not use-less. at least it is still a region free player. At least it plays. LOL
ILO 05 SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I hope the makers burn in hell !

I still own a ilo dvdr04 , after 3 months of use it started scrapping many many dvd's , error after error , so i took the unit apart & manually cleaned the lens , then it would work for a dvd or two , then had to be cleaned again , slowly the unit got worse & worse. So i then upgraded the firmware , added 3 hour lp time , removed copy protection & cleaned the unit again & again , still not working. So one day I was borded & decided to remove the memorex DVD burner from my computer & attach it to the ILO unit , god damn the thing works better than it originally did ,but I wanted my memorex drive back in my computer , so i went to walmart , I saw the new ILO dvd05 , but hell i dont have $120.00 everytime i want the dvd burner to work ,shit , they just dont makem like they usd to , I say that because I still have 2 VHS for 14 years & they still work fine , but this ILO dvd burner worked only 3 months. Well anyway I saw a liteon DVD burner on sale for 40.00 , so i bought it to try in the ILO unit , since I wanted the memorex drive back in my computer , and damn the liteone drive works good to in the ILO unit , it just starts & stops slower than the memorex but works fine. So in conclusion , rather than buying new $120.00 or more units when thse fail , just buy a sale priced dvd burner for a computer & put it in your ILOdvdr04 , it works great & will save ya some money , oh ya and this way you get to keep any upgrades you did tothe unit as well , raher than trying to start over , & as far as iknow there are NO upgrades for the dvdr05. Just thought to share this withyou folks for anyone in a simul;ar situation with there dvd burner. Good Luck

I also have an ILO recorder and get to the finalizing part and it says bad disk even though it wasn't till it got to finalizing. It over heats and requires a cooling fan. It is is good for about 2 dvd's then requires rest.
What I done is put an PC power suppy cooling fan on top of my ILO to keep it cool. That took care of the over heating and freezing up.
I then purchesed a cyber home recorder thinking I got something different. Come to find out is a clone of an ILO? I am going to give it a while on my old vhs tapes an see what happens. One thing I don't like about he cyber home is the display menu on the dvd when done creating it. At least it seem to run cooler and don't require a cooling fan so far.
I just am glad I can covert my VHS video and presurve them on dvd
Any ideas on hack on these recore feel feel to post it ok.

If you want to copy your dvd created from the ILO or cyber home use DVD Decrypter. I use that program for our home videos for our family. Works like clock work. Use the ISO mode.

I also forgot to advise, cover the cooling fins with tape. Make sure you have to pc fan blowing out. I done that and my recorder works like a charm. Far as that goes take a old heater that has fan only and have it suck out the heat built up inside of your recorder. I done that till my recorder got out of warranty. Then I took a dremal and midered out the hole for my pc fan and cover the holes with tape. The fan has to blow out and by it working this way it take the cool air from the bottom throught the recorder and makes it more reliable. From time to time you will have to clean the eye from a film buid up. That happend to me also. Just read these post from other people you will see what I mean. Follow these tips and you should be okay. To be safe burn 2 disk and turn it off and give it a day then record again. I mandged to burn 200+ dvd that way. When I first got it I had nothing but trouble. Till I experimented. I even bought a secound ILO DVDR05 think my first one was defective. It just has a major click, I fixed the major clich.

I found out something today that might explain some of the sudden problems that some folks are having.
I talked to a friend of mine today that is one of the best electronic guys that there is. I asked him if he was into repairing the DVD burners yet. He said he had worked on a few, but that there was not much repair the local shops could do to them. He went on to say that the biggest problem with them was the Lazar. He also said that the lazars only lasted a certain length of time and would eventually burn out. It is kind of like a computer crashing, it?s not if, but when. Sort of like a light bulb, they only have so much life, and only last for a while.
While he was explaining this, a lot of the problems folks have posted on this site and a lot of other site like this started to make sense.
Anyone else out there familiar with this?

I have an dvdr05mu and have been playing a few vcd's that I made on my computer. I notice the there is an option to turn off or on "PBC" mode. Cannot find anywhere in the manual that explains what PBC mode is for VCD disks. Anyone have a clue?

I just recently update my ILO DVDR05MU with the recorder update and seems to straigten it out. Here is the page look it over good and it will set the recorder to the default time and date. At least it did mine. At least now it does finalize without ruining a disk.

So what exactly does this firmware do? I have the same unit and have had disc errors on my last 2 discs. This was during finalizing. It could have been just me though cause I was recording and pausing a lot. Who knows.
