I seen too many problems reported on other forums and tech sites in the last year and a half to two years, (and the ICH10 wasn't even out then), for it to be that! That's why I suggested googling it, as there should be a lot about it on line! It's the main reaso I chose IDE when I built my computer. Everything was new, so i could have gone either way. Since I saw no speed advantage, I chose IDE.
Everyone that has IDE ODDs might be interested in this as well!

Well, I had no issue burning stuff with the 20x S-ATA drive I use (LG GH-20NS15) but then I very rarely burn discs.

A lot of people have had problems though! I didn't try a Sata, so I don't know about mine. The link I gave was for IDEs only. It increases the burning speed to a higher data transfer rate! Neat! It tells you all that it does on the first link page! I may get one myself, since I use IDE for my ODDs.

Still pretty cool. I'll run that patch today.
Now why would you run something you know has bugs?? ROFLMSOAO!! Like so many things in Windows, it could cause all sorts of problems and it might be impossible to remove like SP3 was on the AMD! I had to wipe everything and start over! Just a thought!

Ummm, you guys realize I'm running an ALPHA version of Windows 7. It's not even beta yet and I'm running it on a spare computer.
Trust me, I don't care about bugs.
P.S. For the guy with the new computer thing goin on, I don't know how much more it is but I would recommend a Q6600. Better in the long run.

I had a far bigger improvement going from a 3.2Ghz E4300 to a 3.2Ghz Q6600 than I did from a 3.2Ghz Q6600 to a 3.8Ghz Q9550, so I suspect you may be right.

abuzar1: Is it really going to be that much of a significant difference, how much energy can a HDD use

True, but the amount of energy saved isn't enough to matter. I prefer the straight 7200 rpm ones myself. Just one more thing to go wrong, IMO! One of the things I know about bearings is that they develop a set and they don't like speed changes because it changes the frequency in doing so. Add to that, any noise it does make will be consistent at a steady speed. I've installed a couple of the variable ones at my customer's request, and I didn't like the change in frequency at all. It was annoying! Add a second one and it's even more annoying! One good thing about a steady sound is that you get used to it and don't even notice it at all, after a while. If you were going to save a lot on electricity, I could see it. But like I said, the amount of energy saved is almost nothing as the controller running it eats up almost as much as it saves.

The Greenpower drives don't actually make any noise though, so I'm surprised to hear you say it annoy you. A Greenpower runs at 19-21dB versus the 27-34dB of a Seagate. The energy saving over a year is around 10 dollars, based on a PC being on 12 hours a day. Not much, but every little helps, and as I said before, I recommend them for quietness, you can disable the speed change if you like, the power saving still exists if you do that - 7W versus the 12W of 7200.10s.

Do you have a link for those specs by any chance, because even 27dB would be pretty loud and easily audible! BTW both the Seagates I have in the AMD are the newer drives with Parallel Recording Technology. I just don't like the idea of very large drives to begin with, so I shouldn't have to worry about any noise problems like that!

This is for the same size drive, but 1TB vs 1TB. That's what I love about the WDs, they don't get noisy when you buy big ones. That noise specification is Seagate's official measurement (3 bels) and what Silentpcreview recorded from the drive. Samsung drives are also quite good, but the 1TB versions are inherently unreliable, and they vibrate quite a lot too.

Precisely, so the results aren't impaired by how their test platform reacts to them. In a vibration-free environment that's how they'll sound. Vibration free mounting does exist.

The mount SPCR use carries no vibrations, so the point is, in a case it will sound worse, almost always, which is why they quantify the vibration level so you can gauge this. This is why in cheap cases, Samsung and Maxtor drives are very noisy, solely due to the vibration levels. By contrast in an Antec P182 even noisy Seagate drives sound quiet because of the dampening.

It's funny, I just came from silentpcreview, and I can't find any mention of hard drives or a section for it. I'm sure that it's there somewhere, but I'm not going to read through all those pages to find it. Basically, I want a single platter drive. I like the new Seagate 7200.11 360GB drives. They are quieter than my 7200.10 ones and consume less power and run at a constant 7200 rpm. For the Folks that like large capacity drives, they have a 1.5TB model at Newegg for $149.99.
I tried a little experiment with one of the 160s. I set it on the desktop on top of an aluminum ash tray (Alarm Clock trick from my old college days), which amplifies any noise and vibrations. I put it through it's paces and you barely hear any noise at all. I also took the 250 Deskstar out and did the same thing, and was surprised to see that it was much quieter than it was in the case. After investigating further, I discovered that I had the drive mounted smack up against the front fan. Moving it back slightly so it no longer contacts the fan resolved my noise issue with that drive. It also rendered the case vibration to almost nothing, and it was minimal before. now you can't even tell by feel that the computer is even on. Given all the fans and two HDDs, that's pretty amazing to me. On a scale of 1-100, it rates a 1, and about a 3 if you surround the side fan with your fingers. Remarkably vibration free!
