To me, that sounds like a driver issue like a corrupt driver. I removed the Lan drivers with Driver Magician and re-installed them from the MB CD, and it still didn't work. now for no reason that I can see, it's working again. Strange!

Rick, are these for you?you plan on OCing any?
ive heard that the platinum OCZ mem isnt all the good... they are in the same class as my crappy Crucial ballistix ddr2 800. if your lucky to get the good doublesided 16chip mem your ok,as with the crucial it is a luck of the draw as to which you get...if i rmember correct boozer has had these(3 or 4 sets) and dont recomend them. now i think our GM has gotten some of the gold series might wanna ask him how they are, thats if he has them yet and useing them.
here is a link to the gold series and the reaper series...ive read some good things about the reaper series.

they all are in the same price range after the MIR..$15-$16 for some memory is awsome

2 DVD RWs
I think the PSU could handle this.
I can't think of anything else that might be needed

Rick,
The Deskstars are very fast, but quite noisy! I would throw that PSU in the trash though. They are really sub-standard, and IMO dangerous! I've replaced a couple in the last year, and they are right up there with Bestec and PowMax. The ones I replaced, both went up in smoke! No fire, but.... You can't expect much in the way of quality in a $40 case w/PSU!

Sam,
I take exception to that. I have 2 160GB Seagates in OxiMoron and one was in my rig for over a year and both are dead silent. They are hard to hear, even with the side cover removed. The Deskstar 250 I have in mine is noisy but fast. My WD 120GB is about as quiet as the Seagate. I had the Seagate and the WD in mine for a long time and both were extremely quiet. Mind you, both computers are about 3' away from where we sit, and you can not hear them at all. You have to put your ear right up to the case to hear anything! Gina says the same thing about hers, and she has the same case as mine! Maybe it has to do with your case being aluminum.
Respectfully,
Russ

I'll bet you even money that it makes a barely audible "Scratchy" sound, that you really have to concentrate on to hear at all. The Deskstar makes this "Bonking" sound and it's quite annoying! Sounds like Morse Code, under water! LOL!!

creaky,
I would assume that it has a 2.5" drive in it and I don't ever remember hearing a noisy 2.5" drive in any laptop, even my ancient Dell C610!

but quite right, lappie drives are generally very quiet indeed, it's more that this entire netbook is silent, my poor old 3yr old lappie (AMD Turion ML30) has been made redundant by this tom-thumb sized feat of engineering..

creaky,
Is this a standard PC setup or is it like the HP I had here recently that limited what you could do on it with it's own software package? A customer brought it to me the have XP-Pro installed on it, and it would only let you run HP's Recovery disk. You couldn't install a different OS or software!

Thanks for the link creaky! I see that they all have SSDs so there's no drive noise at all! LOL!! No moving parts so it's dead silent. Nice! I wonder how long it will take for the price to drop on a decent sized SSD?

There's loads of different companies making netbooks now. Whilst SSD sounded good they're significantly slower than a hard drive so i went for a Linux model with a hard drive, blew it all away and XP flies on this thing. Very low power consumption on the Intel Atom yet incredibly powerful. My rucksack was noticibly much lighter today after carrying around the HP lappie around for 3 years, this netbook is something like a kilo yet it's like my bag was empty :)
Anyways, i was originally going to buy the SSD version as those are vastly cheaper than a HDD model but that would've meant total dismantling and sourcing a suitable hard drive, it made sense to go for the middle model (the upper model was the same but with XP as opposed to Linux) and wipe/reinstall. The wifi is a tad crap as it's the less than decent Atheros chipset but it'll do the job. I'd have preferred the proverbial Broadcom wifi chipset but hey, can't expect everything in a very cheap netbook.
Just thought i'd post a few details in case anyone else is contemplating a netbook purchase.

160GB drives are ancient by design, and also much less complex than bigger drives (fewer platters), so not really an ideal judge. Hell, if they're recent drives, they may even be single platter, so it's not a fair comparison.
Every large Seagate since 7200.9 is noisy when seeking, no exceptions. On the other hand, none of the WD drives I've had other than the Raptor and 160GB IDE have been loud, and the same goes for the Samsungs, though they have their own disadvantages in the form of vibration noise.

i just took a 2hr techie test for a job after being out of work for a few months and like anyone else i'm only human so a touch rusty and unsurprisingly feel like crap after being expected to be as sharp as when i was working, so am having a good old beer-up. If any of you were local you'd have been invited :)
Am 40 in a few weeks and wanted to have landed a new job by then :)

I don't care for Ultra PSUs, too many of them are rebadged extra value brand buckets of poop. Some of them are reasonably well designed, but in my mind, it's better to buy PSUs with a bit more engineering credibility.

Rick,
The rest of it is decent for it's intended purpose. I know I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to cheap PSUs, but then I'm also the one who walked in the door, just as the drapes lit up! LOL!! Experiences like that tend to make you that way!
